Ethel Elizabeth Hayslip (nee Conley), 77, of Lorain, passed away Thursday morning, October 5, 2000, unexpectedly at Community Health Partners in Lorain. Mrs. Hayslip was born in Portsmouth OH, and moved to Lorain 53 years ago with her husband, Roy. Together they raised four children. Ethel and Roy loved to work in their garden together. Ethel was a talented cook and gardener and gave her love and energies to making her family happy. She leaves behind many loved-ones. Survivors are her son, Lamont C. Hayslip of Lorain; twin daughters, Marylou Kucera of Lorain, Martha Fite of Lorain and Donna Maholic of Lorain; two sisters, Mrs. Mae Englebrecht of Portsmouth OH, and Mrs. Garnet Allen of Grove City OH; 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; and best friend, Onalee Mackey. She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Roy, in 1978, her father, Leck Conley, her mother, Mary Conley (nee Shepherd), brothers William, Ellis, Arthur and Troy, and sisters Ann Gulick, Leona Hopkins, Esther Gregorac and Lonnie Carmen. Private services were held at Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 E. 31st St., South Lorain OH. Fr. James Ols officiated, Pastor of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, Elyria Township. Burial was at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, reuniting Ethel and Roy on what would have been their 53rd wedding anniversary. Ethel was surrounded by her 4 children and most of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was able to hear our 'good-bye's and 'I love you's and responded to each of us. No mother was ever loved more and we can only learn from her example.

Troy T. Conley, 69, a well-known Lorain businessman, died at Elyria Memorial Hospital yesterday. He was a patient at Altercare Nursing Home in North Ridgeville for the past three weeks and had been ill for the past 20 years. He was born in Portsmouth and came to Lorain from there in 1946. During World War II, Conley served with the Navy as a fireman first class aboard the USS Gold Star in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and participated in the liberation of the Phillipines. After the war, he worked for seven years in the No. 4 Seamless Mill of Lorain Works, U. S. Steel. In the early 1950s, he established the Troy Conley Cleaning Service which soon developed into a full-time enterprise in the Lorain area. He continued to operate the business until health problems compelled him to retire in the early 1970s. He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, and was formerly active in the Central Lorain Businessmens Association. Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Eula (nee Kinney); sons, Gary and Everett of Sheffield Lake; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Linda) Koltas of Sheffield Village; five grandchildren; a brother, William of Newark, Ohio; sisters, Mrs. Mae Englebrecht of Portsmouth, Mrs. Esther Gregorac of Euclid, Mrs. Ethel Hayslip of Lorain, and Mrs. Robert (Garnet) Allen of Portsmouth. The family will receive friends tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the John R. Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Linwood H. Chamberlain, Jr., pastor of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lorain, officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. [NB: Troy T. Conley was my uncle.]
