Hello, I am Descended from one Rebecca Ann Salyers, who was the third wife of France Reynolds Porter of Moll Creek Russell County Virginia.

My Grandmother, Ethel Porter, told me that her father Francis Marion Porter told her that the parents of Rebecca Ann Salyers was David Henderson Salyer and Nancy Price from Grassy Creek Russell County Virginia. That was all the information I had to go on.

This weekend I found many discoveries. I first found a website that listed all of the Saylor/Salyers back to Sallier. Here is the link:


In there I found Scenia Salyers who was the second wife to John H. Porter and a step-mother to France R. Porter who married Rebecca Ann Salyer. Upon further inquiry I found Scenia had a brother named Henderson and Nancy Price was his wife. They only listed one child in the information: Charles Franklin Salyer. I wanted this to be so much the family I was looking for. It was, however, the right time and right place ~ Moll Creek Russell Co, VA. I searched FamilySearch.org (LDS) site and found some information in Henderson and Nancy. That information was a little confusing.

I went to Russell Co site and found two birth records for George and Mary E. Salyer to Henderson and Nancy Salyer and added them to the Charles I already had. I noticed that Nancy died in 1869 and Rebecca Ann was born in 1868 so I thought that there was still a chance I had the right couple.

Tired and exhausted I was ready to quit three times today searching. I don't usually come to this site but i thought what the hey, I've searched everywhere else.

In query for Rebecca under Salyer I found George Salyer 1854 Scott Co. and started scanning the information. Then I found your Posting. !!! :-)

Porter Hollow ~ VA RT 605 ~ Russell Co. VA ~ Cemeteries

Thanks to TopoZone.com ~ Maps I have found in Russell County near Grassy Creek off Rt. 71 at Moll Creek a State Rt 605 called ~ Porter Hollow ~ .There are three cemeteries in the vicinity. Porter Cem. ~ Johnson Cem. ~ and on the Other side of Rt 71 along the Moll Creek is the Salyer Cem.

Looking for any information on these cemeteries. Have they been transcribed?

Francis Porter was born 1781 married 27 November1802 Malinda Johnson (Johnston) in Wilkes Co. North Carolina.

He died about 1839, Molls Creek, Russell County Virginia
After Francis died, John H. bought Francis estate from his brothers and sisters.

John Henry Porter, son of Francis Porter and Melinda Johnson, was born 1803 Wilkes Co. North Carolina. He died 8 February 1872 in Elliott Co. Ky and buried in the Old Porter Cemetery on the Backbone in Elliott Co. Kentucky. John married February 1, 1825, Wilkes County North Carolina, Sarah “Sally” Shue in Wilkes Co. North Carolina. Sally was born 1810 North Carolina and died about 1852 in Molls Creek, Russell Co. Virginia. John married second 24 June 1855, Scenia Salyers his next door neighbor born about 1830, the daughter of Jeramiah and Mary E. GREEN Salyers.

John and Sally had 14 (possibly 15) children. After John married Scenia they had seven children. John and Scenia came to Elliott Co. Ky. in a covered wagon about 1859.

Hi Rick,
Thank you for the information. This is the first I've heard about Porter Hollow. I would imagine that Sally Shew is buried in the Porter cemetery there, but don't know for sure. As far as the Salyers go, the only info I have on them comes from the 1850 Russell Co Census. It shows Jerimiah, age 48 and Mary A, age 45 and the following children: Henderson 20, Cena 19, Elisabeth 13, Wesley 12, and Joseph 10. Mary A is shown as having been born in Scott Co, VA, and Jeremiah in Russell Co. As you said, the Salyers are ennumerated right after the John Porter family, indicating that they were indeed neighbors.
