Sharon MINIX (skminix@aol.com) sent the following e-mail to Thomas D. ALLEN on 15 Dec 1996: "I have a little bit of information about Evaline JACKSON. She was a sister to my Great Grandfather, John JACKSON. Their mother was Vina JACKSON Montgomery. I am unsure about their father. There is a mystery! A number of the JACKSON family members have told me that they were told that their ancestor, John JACKSON was not really a JACKSON but a SMITH. I don't know how. I did find a marriage record in Clay County for a James JACKSON and LaVina SMITH in 1842. I was also told John's father was named James. This may or may not be the right couple. However, there may be any number of explanations for the late marriage. At any rate, it appears that on the original microfiche record of the vital records when John SALYER and Evaline married her name was first listed as SMITH, marked through and JACKSON written over it. Their mother, Vina or LaVina, married John MONTGOMERY in 1848 and they are listed in the 1850 census with her children as well as his by a prior marriage. She and John MONTGOMERY were divorced in 1856 in Floyd County.
My father was Fred MINIX, b. 13 Sep 1892. His mother was Electra Vera (Lecty) JACKSON Minix, b 28 May 1873. Her father was John JACKSON b 1 Dec 1833. He was married to Mary Ann (Pop) MINIX b 10 Dec 1835. They were married 25 Aug 1852 in Floyd Co., MY. John was underage and his mother, Vina Montgomery, signed for him to get married. John JACKSON's death date was 1 May 1895. The birth and death information was taken from his tombstone.
My father knew his grandpa JACKSON well and used to tell me about him. He was a big man, very jolly and hospitable. He had black hair and blue eyes. I have not been able to find a photograph anywhere. I found the church record where he was baptized and joined the Licking River Regular Baptist Church. He was a Confederate soldier although Grandma Pop's father, brothers and cousins were all Union soldiers.
His mother, Vina, was married to John MONTGOMERY, in 1848. They were in the 1850 Federal Census in John MONTGOMERY's household but the census didn't show their last name as JACKSON. Evaline had already married and lived nearby. Vina & John MONTGOMERY divorced in 1856. Vina never remarried to my knowledge.
I don't know much about John's father except that various members of the family have told me his name was James and that they had always heard that John's name was really SMITH instead of JACKSON but nobody knows why or how. It's been very puzzling but there has to be something to it because too many people from different family lines have all heard this. The marriage record in Clay County seems to fit but I don't know if that's them. If it is, there is still a lot I don't understand. Was SMITH her maiden name or a married name? Did the children change their name or had they always gone by the name JACKSON. If James JACKSON was not their biological father and only married their mother in 1842, why did they change their name and keep the name JACKSON even after James's death or a divorce?? It doesn't make sense.
If any of John and Evaline's brothers or sisters died in Kentucky after 1911, a death record with the parents' names would be on file at DVS in Frankfort. However, I don't know what happened to any of them."
