Laurie,
My cousin and I found your line of info the most fascinating thing we have found in a long time. If you could (I know this may be asking too much) send me starting with Thomas and Letty's children all the info you have. It would help many. There are so many researching this line.
I have some more info on Letty. I have been in contact with many Native researchers. They all knew of Letty already. People have been trying to prove her origin for some time. Native researchers do believe Letty to be full blood Cherokee because of her location and time of birth and because Durham is a very well known Indian name.
There are many Durham's still living on Reservations today. They got the name from a Missionary who helped the Cherokee people.
There was also a recent book published (I forget the title). It was about the Revolutionary War. It had a lot about Thomas Howard and a Cherokee Chief named Shyuica he fought with for the British. It leads you to believe that Thomas was well-liked by the Cherokee people. This info I got from NAAH kitty. She published a newsletter about Native Americans. I know Thomas was killed by Indians but it was probably the Shawnee Indians. Take care, Amber

"James Howard's application was made 27 Dec 1833. He stated that he was born in Georgia in the year 1752 in the section of the county where Wilkes County now stands as he was informed by his father and that he was born in the month of September the 13th day. When asked 'Have you any record of your age and if so where is it?' He replied, 'I have none and I only know my name by tradition and the age of the rest of the children and what my mother told me.' He stated that he lived for seven years in Knox County, Kentucky, on the Cumberland River before moving to the Quicksand section of Floyd County. Also, that he served with his brother Thomas in the Revolutionary War. His record of service reads about the same as that of Thomas. His only wife was Elizabeth Green, daughter of Lewis Green. I too am researching the Howard/Arnett lineage. I have Esther Kilgore married James Gareen Jr. Thier daughter was Elizabeth Green b. 1780, d, 1855 in Breathett, Ky, who married James Howard. He was son of Elizebeth Howard b.1784 Va d.bef. 1860 and Stephen Arnett b. 1782 Russell Va. d. bef.1850 Floyd Co,Ky. Thier son Reuben Arnett b.1808-1818 married Sally Mann 1827 Ky. Thier son Jackson Arnett b. 1836 d. 1872 KY, He married Lurana(Louranny) Howard b.1840 d. 1918 Thier son was Harris Arnett b. 1862 d. 1912 who married LouQueen(Luquena) Shepherd, daughter of Brice(Flitterfoot)Shepherd (civil war vet.) Thier daigjter was Barbara Ann Arnett b.1896 d. 1945 W,Portsmouth, Oh. She is my mother-in-law. She married Grover Cleveland Howard b.1888 d.1964 in Ohio. I know this is long and I hope it helps someone. Barb showard8@bellsouth.net
This woman needs some help - to begin with, Esther Kilgore married Lewis Green NOT James Gareen, Jr. She is also confusing This Elizabeth Howard who married Stephen Arnett with someone else. Since James Howard could not possibly be the son of the above couple. LCL - Mar 27, 2003
Birth: According to her death certificate, Elizabeth was born 1768 - in Harlan Co, KY. This can't be correct.
Death: In reference to Elizabeth Green - a death listing for an Elizabeth Green can be found at KHS on microfilm of Vital Statistics 1852-1861 Breathitt Co, KY. Her death is July 1855 at age of 87, married (means James still living), born Harlan, KY, parents Lewis and Elizabeth Green. Resided and died at Quicksand, Breathitt Co. Means her birth was about 1768. Was Lewis Sr. also in Rev. War? How does David know the pension record dates are wrong for Thomas and James? Have heard this before - but no proof. Their parents are traditionally listed as Thomas and Lettie. Does ANYONE have death record for James Howard, husband of Elizabeth? He and wife are in 1850 census with Greenville Howard but not in 1860.

Kentucky
Harlan County & Circuit Court
On the 12th of July, 1837, before the honorable Joseph Eve, Judge of the 15th
Judicial District, in open court, Benjamin Howard aged sixty or sixty one. A
resident citizen of Harlan County, Kentucky, upon his oath according to law made
and subscribed for the purpose of obtaining the benefit of the act of Congress
of 7 June, 1832, for the benefit of officers and soldiers in the Revolutionary
War, spies, and that on the day of, the year forgotten, in Russell County, state
of Virginia, he enlisted as a private for nine months under Captain Hawkins.
Andrew Colvin was Lieutenant or Ensign, which he does not remember, in the
regiment commanded by Col. Andrew Lewis, his Major forgotten. The regiment was
raised by the state of Virginia to guard the frontiers of said state against the
Indians. After his enlistment he was detached, under Colvin ap0 to Cumberland
Gap, where he was stationed at a block house to guard the (?) against the
Indians and frontiers. While there three men were killed on Cannon Creek. He
under Colvin pursued them to Hickory Gap on Emery River, but did not overtake
them. They buried the dead under the command of Colvin. Near the close of his
term ap0 Colvin marched back to Russell County ap0. His term of service ap0
having expired, he received a written discharge which he has long since lost. He
got his discharge from Col. Lewis ap0 in Russell County ap0. Previous to this he
served by the command of the officers of Russell County, as a soldier (private)
in forts in Russell County in actual service in two forts upwards of a year. The
forts were Blackamons and Ponettons Fort in Russell. He was in service when
Blackamons Fort was taken in this service, in standing guard. He enlisted for no
particular period but the service he performed was commanded by the head
officers of the county, as he understood, by the authority of the state of
Virginia. He was to receive from the state so much per month, a part only he
received. He served under diverse officers in the forts and on scouting parties.
Hawkins was commander monthly until he enlisted as ap0. For this service he
never received any written discharge.
He has stated his age. He states his name is not on the pension roll of any
state or the United States, that he never received anything whatsoever for his
services under the act of Congress ap0 nor from any state and he hereby
relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension except the present. His name he
supposes, can be found on the roll of ap0 regiment but he refers to the evidence
of claim ap0. In the same company and regiment he had three other brothers,
Thomas, James, and John. James and Thomas lives in Floyd County, KY. who draw
pensions for said service as he is informed and who enlisted at the same time
and for the same term of time. The reason why he has not applied sooner for a
pension is that he has always been informed the act of Congress ap0 did not
apply to his case.

This day, Andrew Colvin, a citizen of the county ap0, aged 70 the 12th of last
March. He remembers there was a young man under his command by the name of
Benjamin Howard and from the correct narrative given by him (at Cumberland Gap)
he thinks he must have been with him. Howard is mistaken in this in saying that
Lewis was a Col. he was only a Captain Commandant and had the command of all his
troops in that section. It is a mistake that he was under Hawkins, but was under
Captain Lewis. Hawkins was a Lieutenant under Lewis but afterwards made Captain.

A friend who is also a genealogist, saw your Howard information and forwarded it on to me. I seldom look at those things. We would like to inquire WHO gave you the following bit of MISINFORMATION.: ELIZABETH "SEALEY" HOWARD
My husband is a direct descendant of Stephen & Elizabeth and we have much documented information on Howards and Arnetts. Sealey is NOT a nic-name for Elizabeth.

I will scan the following and send you, I send in JPEG: William Howard's marriage record; 2 of Celia's daughter's marriages and permissions; Celia--David P'simer bond; Rause Lovely bond.
I also have not yet deleted a couple of early Knox tax lists which show Lovely near the Howards. They are quite long but interesting.

That girl's name was Arty, it is spelled incorrectly in the 1860 census. There is as yet no proof that she belonged to Celia, but Celia was a given name used in that line. It is only circumstantial evidence, not proof. Some of us think she is and others disagree. No one knows for certain and all the old folk who could tell us are now gone. Elisabeth

Marriage: The rumor that he was killed by raiding Indians is refuted by Elizabeth Salyer in her book.
