In our quest for Shepherd families for our forthcoming Shepherd family book Ms. Stacy (Jackson) Blanton gave us her computer print out on Martha Shepherd b. ca. 1776 in NC who m. George Blanton in VA. This couple migrated to Johnson Co. KY where Martha shows on the 1860 census as age 85 residing in the household of her son James H. Blanton b. 1820 TN and his wife Mary "Polly" Davis.
Who were the parents of Martha Shepherd? She left hundreds of descendants in Johnson, Magoffin, Morgan and other areas and I will mention them as you may identify with some of the progeny. The children and gr/children of Martha and George: (1) Lucinda Blanton b. 1811 m. Elijah Smith, Jr and their children lived mostly in Morgan Co. KY. They were (a) David Smith b. 1832 may have married in 1861 to Polly Ann Holbrook, (b) Elijah Smith b. 1834 may have married in 1853 to Elizabeth Conley, (c) Mary Smith b. 1836, (d) John Smith b. 1838 m. Kala -?-, (e) Hiram Smith b. 1840 m. Nancy -?-, (f) Peter Smith b. 1842 m. Martha Osborn, (g) Covington Smith b. 1843 m. Levisa Cantrill, (h) Sarah Smith b. 1844, (i) Elizabeth Smith b. 1844, (j) Susan Smith b. 1847, (k) Augustus Smith b. 1850, and (l) Haden Smith b. 1846 m. Evelyn Osborne.
Second child and family: (2) Martha "Patsy" Blanton b. 1816 m. William Pennington b. 1817 and they also lived in Morgan Co. KY with children (a) Clabourne Pennington b. 1838 m. Sally Lemaster, (b) Rachel Pennington b. 1841 m. Isaac Conley, (c) Rebecca Pennington b. 1843, (d) Joshua Pennington b. 1845, (e) George Pennington b. 1847 m. Mary B. Young, (f) Levi Pennington b. 1849 m. Sylvania Colvin, (g) Mary Pennington b. 1852 m. Joseph Lemaster, (h) Jesse Pennington b. 1854 m. Sarah Salyer and (i) David Pennington b. 1857.
George and Martha's 3rd child: (3) Elizabeth Blanton b. 1795(?) m. in 1822 to James Lemaster b. 1801 Lee Co. VA. Their children, who lived mostly in Morgan and Johnson counties: (a) William Lemaster b. 1822 m. Neucarious Salyer, (b) Ellen/Nellie Lemaster b. 1830 m. James I. Johnson, (c) Eleazor "Ealy" Lemaster b. 1832 m. Elizabeth "Betty" Keeton, (d) George W. Lemaster b. 1834 m. Susanna Davis, (e) Sylvester Lemaster b. 1836 m. Sarah Nancy Reed, (f) Elizabeth Lemaster b. 1844, (g) James B. Lemaster b. 1848, (h) Sadie Lemaster b. ca. 1850 and (i) Richard Lemaster.

Their children, per 1850 Johnson Co. census, (a) James Blanton b. 1833 m. 1858 Cynthia Ratliff, (b) Rebecca Blanton b. 1835 m. 1858 James Ratliff, (c) Tempa Blanton b. 1839 m. John Ratliff, (d) John Blanton b. 1841 m. Selina J. Salyer, (e) William Blanton b. 1843 m. 1866 to Delila Rice, (f) Katherine Blanton b. 1845, and (g) Henry Blanton b. 1848.
Martha and George's next child was: (6) George Blanton b. 1816 m. Tabitha Landsdome. This family apparently moved out of our area. Their known children: (a) Charity Blanton b. 1834, (b) Zachary Blanton b. 1837, (c) Susannah Blanton b. 1839, (d) Wyman Blanton b. 1840, (e) Bracken Blanton b. 1842, (f) Sarah E. Blanton b. 1845, (g) James M. Blanton b. 1848, and another child b. 1850.
(7) James H. Blanton b. 1820 TN m. Mary "Polly" Ann Davis. Their children: (a) Elias "Bud" Blanton b. 1843 m. Manerva McCarty, (b) George "Wash" Blanton m. Angeline Nickell, (c) Martha Blanton m. Oliver B. McKenzie, (d) Anna Blanton m. D. S. McCarty, (e) Jim "Mack" Blanton m. Sarah McCarty, (f) John E. Blanton m. Sarah Williams, (g) Harmon Blanton m. 1. Arminta Coldiron and m. 2. Rose McKenzie Lemaster, (h) Mary Blanton m. James B. Gullett, (i) Sanford L. Blanton m. Sarah Ann McKenzie, (j) Lydia M. Blanton, (k) William R. Blanton m. Juda McFarlan, and (l) Ben Blanton m. Cordella Lemaster. They are mostly Johnson County families.
The last known child of Martha and George was (8) Alsey Blanton b. 1822 m. Madison "Mattney" Blanton. He may have m. 1. Rebecca Blanton, dau of John Blanton, in Green Co. TN and had four children named John, Cyrene, Martha, and Delila. It is told that Madison migrated to western Kentucky and Arkansas and brought back a child named James Blanton who first shows in 1860 Magoffin census at age 17. His mother is said to have been an Indian.
This James Blanton (though not a descendant of Martha) was the eldest child in that census. Madison Blanton then m. Alsy Blanton b. 1822, youngest dau of Martha and George and their children were: (a) Nancy Jane Blanton b. 1851 m. Franklin C. Howard, (b) Newton Blanton b. 1852 m. 1. Phoebe Montgomery and m. 2. Elizabeth Conley,(f) Ludema Blanton b. 1861, (g) Anderson Blanton b. 1864 m. Lula Phipps, and (g) William W. Blanton b. 1866 m. Elizabeth Helton.
