06-25-1999: In notes from Thomas Kennedy (b. 1959): Gentry is a variation of the Enlish nickname Gentle, although sometimes used in an ironic fashion, generally described the "gentleman" from Old French and Middle English, gentil = well-born, noble, courteous. Variations are: Gentile, Jentle, Gent, Jent and Gentry.
In a note from Margaret Caito Kennedy (b. 1920) to her son, Tom Kennedy:
Hi Tom,
Aunt Jo would have loved that explanation of the name Gentile. It would have confirmed all that she believed. You could have had a great go around with her. She said when grandpa Caito (Thomas Salvatore Caito) came to this country, he did not come "cattle class" but had a cabin; and when great-grandpa Rocco came (Antonio Rocco), he came through New Orleans, and traveled up the Mississippi to Cincinnati where he had relatives and then on to Cleveland. Their son was the first Italian boy to be born in Cleveland, according to Aunt Jo. When Ed and I were researching at the Archives, the Rocco we thought was grandma Caito's father, I beleive was traveling first class. One additional thing, Aunt Jo always said that the Gentile's were from France.
Love,
Mom
In another note, she writes:
When you get to Josephine Gentile, only daughter of Peter Gentile and Marina Catalano, she has seven brothers, three of whom were: Francesco, Ignatius and Joseph. Joseph married Augustina, who would have been Grandpa's aunt. One of her girls married a Badali. I remember some of her children went to Sacred Heart Church and had a non-Italian name which I do not recall, but who were known to be nice people. My friend, Toni Russo, taught school at Sacred Heart and I used to play on a badminton team there with her. Augustina is the same one I spoke of who went to San Francisco after the earthquake, but did not stay there.
I think that Josephine Gentile's two brothers, Francisco and Ignatius, were bachelors who Aunt Jo used to talk about and who were very religious men. I am eager to get back to the list and find Anthony Rini in Cleveland who is looking for names similar.
Love,
Mom
10-14-1999: In a Family History of the descendants of John B. and Margherita Caito it is noted that Margherita's parents, Giovanni and Josepina Gentile, died in their 80's in Detroit. They had visited their daughter, Margherita, in Providence, Rhode Island several times. Margherita would frequently go to Detroit to visit her parents.
Margherita's mother, Josepina Gentile Caito, was the only daughter of a wealthy sea captain and had been brought up in privileged conditions. Josepina had two older brothers, both fishermen, who never married but lived together like monks. Josepina learned to embroider as a child and was pampered by her parents, who bought her fine jewelry and even hired a woman to comb her hair.
10-14-1999: Tom Kennedy's records list her birth year as 1854 while Family History of John B. and Margherita Caito list her birth year as 1858 and her year of death as 1945.
Giovanni Michele Ardizone CAITO:
Born 28 September 1840, Termini Imerese, Sicily
Died 1929, Detroit, Wayne Co, MI
05-29-1999: Genealogy Research Report by Kathy Kirkpatrick located the birth of Giovanni Michele Ardizzone Caito in the Termini birth records from 1839-1842 (LDS LIbrary microfilm #1688275) occurring on September 28, 1840. Giovanni Michele was born to Salvadore Ardizzone Caito, 26 years old, a fisherman, living on Ardetta Corso with his wife, Saveria Corso, 26 years old.
Note in this record that Salvadore and Saveria are living on Ardetta Corso at the time. Note also in this record that Salvadore is listed with the last name "Ardizzone Caito" while in a later birth record for Antonino (1843), Salvadore is listed only as "Ardizzone." In this record, Salvadore's birth year would be placed at 1813/1814 and Saveria's birth year would also be placed at 1813/1814. Many of the birth records of their children place Salvatore and Saveria's birth in the early 1820's. However, Salvatore and Saveria's marriage records, which occurred much earlier in time (1836), place Salvatore's birth year at 1811 (he was 25 years old at the time) and Saveria's birth year as 1816/1817 (she was 19 years old at the time). Since the marriage records are closer in time to Salvatore and Saveria's birth, I have used their marriage records to place their birth year and am not using the birth records of their children to do so.
09-11-1999: In an e-mail from Thomas D'Amore of Providence, RI to Paul J. Caito:
On Marighrita, she married John B Caito. Her father was Giovanni Caito who was a wealthy sea captain who owned a fleet of fishing boats. Giovanni married Guiesppina Gentile. Giovanni and Guiesppina's children were: Salvatore, Peter, Marina, Providenzia and Sara and Marighrita. (not in this exact order) This document I am quoting from was made up by the daughters of John B Caito. I will try to send you a copy soon.
