July 1963 at Ft Bragg in South Carolina found Ed at Jump School. Escape and Invasion Survival Courses were begun at Elgin AFB in Pensacola, FL and completed at Hurlabut AFB, FL and in Panama. He was assigned to the first Pathfinders - an elite section of the U. S. Air Force Air Commandos, 1 Aug 1964. Ed was stationed in Viet Nam from 15 Aug 1964 to 1 Sep 1966. He was awarded: 2 Bronze Stars with a V for Valor; 2 Silver Stars with a V for Valor; Air Force Cross, Purple Heart with 7 Stars; Vietnamese Medal of Gallantry. Minor awards included: Vietnam Service Ribbon; Good Conduct Medal; Jump Wings; Special Award of Combat Infantryman's Badge; Expert Marksman Badge. He received a Field Commission to First Lieutenant, 1 Mar 1965; Ed was promoted to Captain, 1 Jun 1966.
