Birthplace: Patrick Co., VA; found dead in the woods." From the Breathitt Co., KY Vital Statistics listing we know that William Allen was found dead in the woods in 1854 and that he was born in Patrick Co., VA. In 1776, Patrick Co., VA was cut out of Pittsylvania County and was named for Patrick Henry. When first formed, Henry County embraced the whole of what is now Patrick County (the county given where Samuel Allen and Sarah Prater were married) and the greater portion of present Franklin Co., VA. Virginia County information from Virginia "Jo" Stephens, Hazard, KY. From traditional stories handed down in the family, we learn from Clyde P. Allen of Martin, KY that William Allen was found dead in the woods after leaving the home of his brother George Allen who lived in Floyd Co. It was told that animals had partly eaten his body by the time he was found. It is not known exactly when he died but the entry in the Vital Statistics is 8 Feb 1854. Clyde Allen says the story is that there was some kind of a party or gathering that lasted for days at the home of George Allen, and William grew tired and left for his home in Breathitt Co., KY. It is not known where he is buried. Clyde Allen believes that he was buried in the cemetery where George Allen and Cynthia Patton Allen were buried, known as the Mandy Turner Cemetery on Brush Creek of Floyd Co., KY. It is also possible that he was buried on the spot where his body was found or was removed to his home place in Breathitt County, Kentucky.
