"We find that the Allens came from Connecticut to Virginia, and after the Revolution many went to North Carolina and from there to Kentucky and Tennessee. George Allen and two other Allens, it has been told, came to Kentucky about 1793, and it was believed these three were brothers." p. 8.
DAR states: "John Allen was born 1750 and was a second cousin of Ethan Allen, and married Janet (Jane) Colman, a daughter of Samuel and Sara Lyons Colman of Virginia. John and Samuel were both Revolutionary War soldiers." According to this version John had three sons: George, William (Bill), and an unknown (Abraham ?) p. 8.
"Bill Allen (b. ca. 1770 or 1775) married a Martin or a Gayheart. He came to Kentucky with George Allen and another whose name is lost (Abraham ?) about 1793. Bill went to the Licking River and raised his family in Magoffin County." HISTORY AND GENEALOGY RECORD OF THE ALLENS-BEGLEYS-MAYS OF KENTUCKY by Jackson Allen Begley. p. 60.
Death: The family of Archibald Prater was enumerated in the 1810 Census of Floyd Co. Also present in the county was Sarah ALLEN,the widow of Samuel Allen. William Allen, born ca 1783 in Patrick Co., Va, son of Sarah and Samuel Allen, died in Breathitt Co. in 1854.

Samuel ALLEN enlisted in the Revolutionary forces, Sept 11, 1780, with Archibald PRATER. Sarah PRATER was a sister of Archibald. Samuel ALLEN signed an oath of allegiance to the United States in Henry Co., VA. on the third Monday of January, 1777. A Samuel ALLEN was taken prisoner during the Rev. War by the British 19 Oct 1781. Samuel may have been the brother of John ALLEN. During the period of 1782-87 the name of Samuel ALLEN was on the tax lists of Henry Co. VA. In 1795 Samuel ALLEN was one of the signers of a petition asking that Tazewell County be formed from part of Russell County. In the 1810 census of Floyd County, KY. was a Sarah ALLEN, probably the widow of Samuel ALLEN. (What is the source of this information?)
Sarah PRATER:
Alias Sally PRATER
Born ABT 1760
Died BEF 1840, Floyd Co, KY
A Nehemiah PRATER is mentioned in many Henry Co., VA documents. This could possibly have been Sarah's father; he is mentioned a few times in connection with Samuel ALLEN. Archibald PRATER married Sarah FUGATE d/o Josiah FUGATE. According to Peggy Sue Wilson, Sarah is a sister of Archibald PRATER.
Census Date: 1810
Census Place: Floyd Co, KY
Sally Allen was found on the 1810 Floyd County Tax List. She is probably the correct Sally since at least two of her sons are also there - George and William. Her husband is supposedly deceased by 1810 if Sally's name was on the rolls.
Children

Married 18 June 1808, Floyd Co, KY
William ALLEN:
Born ABT 1783, Patrick Co, VA

The last three children (Mary, Sally, James) are presumed to be William's children, but no substantial proof of parentage exists.
Death: According to KENTUCKY VITAL STATISTICS by Annie Walker Burns Bell: "William came to Kentucky about the year 1793 and settled somewhere on the Licking River in the present Magoffin County. William is the ancestor of the Magoffin County Allens." p. 91. BREATHITT CO., KY VITAL STATISTICS: "William Allen-age 71, d. Feb. 8, 1854; married; farmer; parents-Samuel and Sarah Allen. Birthplace: Patrick Co., VA; found dead in the woods." From the Breathitt Co., KY Vital Statistics listing we know that William Allen was found dead in the woods in 1854 and that he was born in Patrick Co., VA. In 1776, Patrick Co., VA was cut out of Pittsylvania County and was named for Patrick Henry. When first formed, Henry County embraced the whole of what is now Patrick County (the county given where Samuel Allen and Sarah Prater were married) and the greater portion of present Franklin Co., VA. Virginia County information from Virginia "Jo" Stephens, Hazard, KY. From traditional stories handed down in the family, we learn from Clyde P. Allen of Martin, KY that William Allen was found dead in the woods after leaving the home of his brother George Allen who lived in Floyd Co. It was told that animals had partly eaten his body by the time he was found. It is not known exactly when he died but the entry in the Vital Statistics is 8 Feb 1854. Clyde Allen says the story is that there was some kind of a party or gathering that lasted for days at the home of George Allen, and William grew tired and left for his home in Breathitt Co., KY. It is not known where he is buried. Clyde Allen believes that he was buried in the cemetery where George Allen and Cynthia Patton Allen were buried, known as the Mandy Turner Cemetery on Brush Creek of Floyd Co., KY. It is also possible that he was buried on the spot where his body was found or was removed to his home place in Breathitt County, Kentucky.

Richard ALLEN:
Born 1797
Died 1866
Death: FROM JOYCE PERREAULT: "Richard Allen's father came to America from Wales in the mid 1700's. Richard Allen was born in North Carolina in the late 1700's and came to Kentucky via Wythville, Wythe Co., Virgina, according to his great grandson, Grover Cleveland Allen in SEVEN GENERATIONS OF ALLENS IN KENTUCKY, p. 636. Richard Allen came to Kentucky before 1800, to an area that is now Magoffin County, Kentucky but was once Morgan County. He received land grants in Morgan Co., KY on 9 Oct 1824 for 50 acres on White Oak Creek, and on 27 June 1830 for 50 acres on White Oak Creek. Richard first lived in Caney, Kentucky, for a short while then moved to White Oak Creek. He died at age 69, year not known. (Magoffin Co., KY Cemetery Records, Vol. 3, lists the marked graves in the Allen Cemetery on Lower White Oak and states that there are 20 or more unidentifiable graves, probably Richard and Edith Allen are buried there as their son Daniel W. Allen was buried in this cemetery.) There are no markers for Richard or Edith." Information on this family assimilated by Todd Preston and Ernest Allen. Some early material from Joyce Perreault, P.O. Box 223, Rysley, OK 74062. NOTE FROM ERNEST ALLEN: "This information is of the descendants of Richard Allen, born 1797 and married 1819 Edy Williams, daughter of Elder Daniel Williams. These authentic records are from old family Bibles of the ALLEN families, church records, census reports, cemetery records, and information from older ALLEN family members. The first three or four generations of the Richard ALLEN family settled on the White Oak Creeks of Morgan and Magoffin counties and on Caney Creek in Morgan County, Kentucky." See information on Daniel Allen who died April 1826 in Morgan Co., KY. Richard ALLEN is found in the 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, U.S. Censuses for KY. Some researchers have listed Richard ALLEN as a child of Samuel ALLEN and Sarah Prater. Samuel ALLEN's proven child, William ALLEN was born ca. 1783. It is possible for Richard ALLEN to have been a brother to William. The descendants of the "White Oak Set" of ALLENs have always claimed a relation with the family of William ALLEN who settled mainly in the Magoffin Co. area.
