93. Nancy ARNETT [scrapbook] (Barnett S. , Elias , Elias , David ) was born 2 Mar 1855 in Harlan County, Kentucky. She died 19 Mar 1926 in Blossom, Texas.
BIRTH: Date frrom 1860 Harlan Co census - age given as 5.
Nancy married Jefferson HOSKINS, son of John HOSKINS and Mary Jane EADS, on 1 May 1871. Jefferson was born 15 Apr 1851 in Harlan County, Kentucky. He died 1 Jun 1926 in Blossom, Texas.
Family say he was English and Irish.
Jeff and Nan were born in the same house in Harlan County, Ky. Jeff's Father owned this house at the time of Jeff's birth, and then sold it to Nancy Arnett's father .
Jeff worked in the lumber business and was a farmer. He bought a farm when he got to Texas.
They married in 1871, and moved to TX. @ 1884. Their train was robbed by the Dalton Brothers. No one was killed, but a man was injured in a scuffle with the outlaws and Nan used her petticoat to bandage him.
Nan told of sitting up all night at the window with an axe, when Jeff went for supplies. The fact she was part Indian didn't keep her from fearing them.
The Hoskins family's KY farm was sold for $1.00 per acre, and shortly afterward it was turned in to a very profitable coal mine.
Nan died in March 1926, and Jeff prayed to die also. Three months later he did, on the same day of the week, and in the same room of their son, Allan's home in Lamar County, TX. They had lived with son Henry M. a year prior to living with Allan.
Jeff's Obit. found in Hopkins Co., gathered by their Genealogy Society had the following:
HOSKINS, JEFFERSON -Rev. A. L. Eaves (could it be Eades? per JL) had a phone message from Blossom Tuesday night requesting he come to that place and conduct the funeral of "Uncle Jim" Hoskins, who formerly lived at Palestine, south of Cumby. Mr. Hoskins was one of the leading citizens of Cumby for many years, leaving many relatives and friends. (He could be buried in the Long cemetery, as he has a child there) (the part about being buried in Long cemetery was put in by the genealogy society.-but I could not find he or Nan there, did find their son, Thomas J.)
A later Newspaper report said, " Mr. Hoskins died Jun 1, 1926. He was born April 5, 1851, in Bell County, Ky. and was married May 1, 1871 to Nancy M. Arnette. To this union were born ten children, six of whom are living. Mr. and Mrs. Hoskins were both born in the same house. The father of Mr. Hoskins having owned the home at the time of his birth. Later he sold the house to Mr. Arnette, the father of Mrs. Hoskins. They attended the same school when children, joined the Missionary Baptist Church and were baptized together: died in the same room at the home of Allan Hoskins, in the same year on the same day of the week. Rev. A. L. Eaves preached both funerals at the same hour, using the Bible belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Hoskins."
