This is a note from James E. Allen: Samuel Howard was in the 45th KY Mounted Infantry Regiment, Co. D, Union Army during the Civil War. After Samuel's death in 1880, his widow Mary Walker Howard applied for a pension for herself and their children. According to the pension records in Washington D. C. Mary Howard made application on June 30,1883 and the application was sworn to by Mary Howard the applicant and also sworn to by George Howard, Whitakerville, KY and by Johnson Risner, H. G. Gardner and A.P Atkeson. They were swon to the application by Augustus Arnett, Clerk of the Magoffin Circuit Court. On the application the children of Mary Walker and Samuel Howard were listed as follows:
