08-26-1998: Death Certificate on file obtained from City Hall; Batavia, New York
Her birth date on her tombstone lists 1880 as year of birth but death certificate lists 1879. Paul J. Caito (b. 1953 - great-grandson) remembers Anna Sansone Caito (b. 1897 - daughter) as saying 1880 was the year of her mother's birth on many occasions. The info on the death certificate was supplied by Joseph Sansone (d. 1975 - great-nephew) who was probably less likely to know the year of birth than Anna or Paul.
10-07-1998: Death certificate of Antonina Sansone in 1910 (daughter) lists mother's name as "Providenza," not Salvatrice or Bertha. 1930 Buffalo City directory lists the wife of Joseph Sansone of 108 Sycamore, as "Salvatrice." The name of Bertha was used on the death certificate of her husband in 1951 (on file). The name "Salvatrice" was used on her Funeral Holy card and the name was supplied to the Funeral home by Joseph Sansone (d. 1975 - great-nephew). The names she used throughout her life appear to change from Providenza to Salvatrice to Bertha.
Burial: She is buried at: Lot 78 Sec 5 Grave 4.
Residence: 14 Porter Avenue
Residence Date: 1952
Residence Place: Batavia, Genesee Co, NY
Providenza moved to Batavia, New York abt. 1952 to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Anna Sansone Caito and Augustino Caito, following her husband's death in December, 1951.

The first family car was purchased by Anna Sansone Caito with funds provided by her father. She bought a 1932 Hudson! Her son, Samuel J. Caito, remembers having the car in 1944 when he was in college (remember those were the war years and one had to hold on to a car for quite a while). In 1948, when cars were available again, the family bought a 1948 Oldsmobile Hydromatic (automatic transmission) for a price in the mid-$600.00! And, you HAD to trade in your car in order to buy a new car.

23 Sep 1998: Naturalization papers obtained from the Genesee County History Center indicate that Augustino petitioned for citizenship April 2, 1919 at Moutiers St. Jean, Cote d'or, France! The petition states that he had been in the American Expeditionary Forces in France since April 30, 1918, so he had been fighting in Europe for nearly a year for the United States while still an Italian citizen! The papers further state that he emigrated from Termini Imerese on March 5, 1902 (Approx. 9 1/2 years old) and arrived in the United States through the Port of New York City on March 15, 1902 on an unknown ship. He had an amended petition for citizenship on May 7, 1926 (I don't know why there was an amended petition) and his oath of allegiance read in part: "I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and objure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, and particularly to Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy,..."
On the petition, his height was listed as 71" (6' 1"), his complexion was "light", eyes were "gray" and hair was "brown" with no birth marks!
