Agostino Ardizzone CAITO:
Born 20 November 1846, Termini Imerese, Sicily
Died 26 September 1934, Batavia, Genesee Co, NY
Death: 26 Sep 1934: Obituary obtained from Batavia Daily News, Wednesday September 26, 1934, p. 3. Died at 1:00 AM at his home at 73 Union Street. He had been in failing health for two years and been seriously ill for the past week. Funeral Services held on Friday September 28th, 1934 at his home at 8:30 AM and at St. Anthony's Church at 9:00 AM. Interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery; Batavia, NY
26 Aug 1998: Death Certificate on file obtained from City Hall; Batavia, NY.
Death occurred at 1:00 AM on Sept 26, 1934 with primary cause as chronic myocarditis and secondary cause as senility. Attending physician was Samuel J. Gerace, MD, a longtime family friend. The certificate notes that his occupation was a fruit merchant and he last worked at the occupation in November, 1931, spending 18 years (since 1913) in this occupation. It states he had been a resident of Batavia for 21 years (since 1913).
21 Sep 1998: Tombstone in St. Joseph's Cemetery lists year of birth as 1846 while death certificate lists date of birth as November 1845. At this point I don't have enough other sources to hazard a guess as to which may be the more correct date. Death Certificate also says that he had been in the USA for 21 yrs, which would give us a date of 1913. His wife's death certificate (Francesca, d. 1944) states that she had been here for 36 years, which would give us a date of 1908. The 1908 date may be more correct as we know that their oldest daughter, Margherite came to the USA in 1908 or 1909 to get married to Filippo "Philip" Sansone in 1909 (She may have been already married to Filippo before coming to the USA). Augustino and Francesca's son, Augustino Ardizzone Caito (b. 1892) often told of the story of coming to the USA with his father with his sister Margherite. (per Paul J Caito, Rochester, NY)
5 Dec 1998: Phone conversation with Augustine "Ed" Scarpace of Kenmore, NY: Ed remembers a story about his grandfather concerning the selling of Augustino's fishing boats before he left Termini Imerese. It seems that in his attempt to sell his boats (as the family was selling everything before leaving), none of the other fisherman would buy his boats at the price he thought was fair. Knowing that Augustino couldn't very well take his boats with him, they all waited until Augustino "practically gave" his boats away to the other fishing companies and fisherman at a fraction of their true cost, as Augustino had no choice but to take what he could get. (per Paul J Caito, Rochester, NY)
6 Dec 1998: Phone conversation: Ann Marie Mascari Jones, of Johnson City, NY, remembers a story about her grandfather in that Augustino saved the lives of many fisherman in some type of storm or accident that occurred at Sea and as a result, Augustino was awarded a medal of honor of some sort from the King of Italy (at the time, Victor Emmanuel III). Augustino was also eligible for a lifetime pension as a result, but being a proud and independent man, he did not want to accept the pension. (per Paul J Caito, Rochester, NY)
Immigration Date: 1908
He came to the U.S. when he was in his 60's!

Francesca Maria MASCARI:
Born 15 August 1858, Termini Imerese, Sicily
Died 15 February 1944, Kingston, Luzerne Co, PA
Birth: 27 Aug 98: Approximate date of birth (1858) supplied by Anna Sansone Caito (b. 1897) to Patrice Caito in 1978. Her tombstone in St. Joseph's Cemetery also lists 1858 as the year of birth.
Death: 30 Oct 1998: (per Paul J Caito, Rochester, NY) Death Certificate obtained from Pennsylvania notes date of birth as August 15, 1861; but the year 1861 was obviously added later as it does not match the style handwriting used on the rest of the death certificate. Her age is given as 83 yrs old at death, which would make 1861 correct but my guess is that the 1858 birth year is the more correct one, making her 85 yrs old at death. Death certificate notes that she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Edith Caito and Samuel Mascari, for 5 years, and their address at the time of her death was 36 N. Loveland Avenue. It further states that she had been in the USA for 36 years, so she arrived in the USA in 1908. It also notes that she had no Social Security Number. Death occurred at 7:00 AM as listed on the certificate and she had been ill since February 11th, 1944.
6 Dec 1998: (per Paul J Caito, Rochester, NY) phone conversation with Ann Marie Mascari Jones of Johnson City, NY: Ann Marie remembers that her family would travel from Wilkes-Barre, where they lived, to Batavia every summer to see her grandmother, Francis Caito. She remembers that they would often ask her to come down and stay with them in Wilkes-Barre but she never would. Grandmother Francis Caito finally did come down to live with them the year before she died and Ann Marie feels that her grandmother probably sensed that she may not have much time left, and so finally went to stay with her daughter and grandchild. Ann Marie remembers her grandmother as a very kind and gentle woman.

Paolo Francis Ardizzone CAITO:
Alias Paul CAITO

Died 10 May 1970, Batavia, Genesee Co, NY at St. Jerome Hospital
Buried 14 May 1970, Batavia, Genesee Co, NY at St. Joseph Cemetery
Occupation: Partner: Caito Brothers Wholesale and Retail Fruit
09-23-1998: Petition papers for naturalization lists his name as Paolo Caito Ardizzone and lists his birth date as July 26, not July 25 as we currently have him down. It notes he emigrated from Palermo, Italy on December 18, 1906 and arrived at the Port of New York on December 31, 1906 on the vessel S.S. Cedric, White Star Line. He arrived in Batavia on January 15, 1907. He declared his intention to become a citizen on October 28, 1908 and made a final petition for citizenship on February 27, 1912. At the time his address was listed as 72 Union Street. At the time he was listed as 5' 8" with weight of 164 lbs., dark brown hair and brown eyes. His occupation was "Merchant."
Birth: 09-21-1998: Frank Scarpace (b. 1922) notes that all the children of Augustino Caito (b. Nov. 1845) were born in Termini Imerese. Even though obituaries list Palermo as the birthplace of most of the male children, the most likely birthplace is Termini as Augustino himself was born in Termini (according to his death certificate) and very likely did not move to Palermo temporarily and back to Termini.
Death: 05-10-1970: Obituary obtained form Batavia Daily News indicates Paul had been a patient at St. Jerome Hospital since March 1, 1970 before his death. It notes that he died at 12:30 PM on Sunday, May 10, 1970. He had been a former director of the Batavia Baseball Club and had been a resident of Batavia for 55 years (since 1915?). Services were held from the Gilmartin Funeral Home on Thursday May 14th at 9:30 AM and from St. Mary's Church at 10 AM. Burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Batavia, New York. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Church.

23 Sep 1998: Death certificate on file lists parents with a last name of Cianciolo. Previous information had her last name listed as Cianciloa. I think the death certificate may be more accurate as the information was supplied by Frances L. Caito who was known to be aware of the details. The certificate lists her birth place as Ohio and residence in Batavia since 1910 (58 years). She and her husband Paul, lived at 37 Woodrow Road, Batavia NY 14020.
Funeral from the Gilmartin Funeral Home on January 22, 1968 with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery in the family plot (photograph on file)
Petition papers for her husband Paul, lists his wife's name as Cianciolo so this confirms the death certificate spelling. It also lists her birthplace as Cleveland.

The first family car was purchased by Anna Sansone Caito with funds provided by her father. She bought a 1932 Hudson! Her son, Samuel J. Caito, remembers having the car in 1944 when he was in college (remember those were the war years and one had to hold on to a car for quite a while). In 1948, when cars were available again, the family bought a 1948 Oldsmobile Hydromatic (automatic transmission) for a price in the mid-$600.00! And, you HAD to trade in your car in order to buy a new car.

6 Dec 1998: Phone conversation with Ann Marie Mascari Jones of Johnson City, NY: Ann Marie remembers her mother telling her that the family emigrated on the maiden voyage of a ship which she believes was on the White Star Line and may have been the "Olympia," and that the trip occurred in February. Edith was six (6) or seven (7) years old at the time. This info may help us locate the passenger lists and pinpoint more accurately the family's date of arrival in the USA. The family travelled First Class and as a result did not have to process through Ellis Island upon arrival. Because the family travelled First Class, they were able to sit with the Captain of the Ship at the dinner table, since Augustino was himself the owner of a fishing fleet and an experienced man of the Sea. Because the weather was cold in New York City at that time of year, and because it was warm in Termini, the oldest brother, Salvatore, met the family in New York with coats for everyone to wear, since they did not own any, never having had need for winter coats in Termini.
Birth: 27 Aug 1998: Approximate date of marriage supplied by Anna Sansone Caito (b. 1897) to Patrice Caito in 1978.
Death: 21 Sep 1998: Frank Scarpace (b. 1922) remembers that Edith died in Mountain Top, Pennsylvania. She was listed as living in Kingston, PA in her mother's (Frances Mascari Caito) obituary. Previous obituaries of the other brothers listed her as living in Wilkes-Barre which is probably the nearest largest city.
14 Oct 1998: Funeral Holy Card has been located from Samuel J Caito (b. 1925) which lists Edith C Mascari with a date of death of August 28, 1982. This confirms the info from the SS Death Index for her.
3 Dec 1998: Death certificate on file obtained from PA Dept of Health: Notes that Edith died at 4:15 AM on August 28, 1982 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. It lists her birth date as February 12, 1901 (whereas SS. Death Index lists date as February 8, 1901). Primary cause of death was Carcinoma of the ovary with metastases (Stage IV) and secondary cause of death is listed as Coronary artery disease. Attending Physician was Arthur N. Mayer, MD, Third Avenue, Kingston PA 18704.
Address at time of death: Mrs. Edith Mascari, 12 Beech Street, Mountain Top, PA 18707.
Samuel L MASCARI:
Born 5 July 1899, Syracuse, Onondaga Co, NY
Died 29 May 1973, Mountain Top, Luzerne Co, PA at Mercy Hospital
Buried 31 May 1973, Syracuse, Onondaga Co, NY at St Agnes Cemetery
12-01-1998: [Broderbund Family Archive #110, Vol. 2 M-Z, Ed. 6, SSDI: U.S., Date of Import: Dec 1, 1998, Internal Ref. #1.112.6.7927.93] Individual: Mascari, Samuel Social Security #: 172-28-3915; Issued in: Pennsylvania; Birth date: Jul 3, 1899 Death date: May 1973; Last known residence: 18707; Mountain Top, PA.
Birth: 3 Jul 1899 according to the SS Death Index.
Death: 01-13-1928: Obituary of his brother, Frank, who died on this date at age 32 lists Samuel as living in Syracuse at the time.
10-15-1998: Death Certificate received from State of PA indicates a birth date of July 5, 1900 but it is obvious that the certificate was changed from a year of 1899. His age was listed at 72 years old, but it is obvious that the age was also changed when the year of birth was changed. The info on birth date, etc. was provided by Edith Caito Mascari (wife) and she is probably correct with the month and day, but the SS Administration is probably more correct on the year. The certificate indicates that he was DOA (Dead on Arrival) at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, Pa on May 29, 1973 at 4:25 PM. Cause of death was
arteriosclerotic cardiovascular heart disease. The certificate also states that he is not a veteran. The certificate lists his parents as Frank Mascari and Ann Williams. Interestingly enough, his sister: Josephine Mascari Caito, wife of Antonio Caito, has a death certificate that lists her parents as Frank Mascari and Anna Guglielmino. We know that Samuel and Josephine have the same mother and father and we think that Anna Williams is the correct maternal name. Their mother's obituary lists her brothers as a last name of Williams (and also LaNasa - we think her mother divorced at some point and her LaNasa brothers are actually step-brothers).
10-28-1998: Death Certificate indicates that he was buried in St. Agnes Cemetery in Syracuse, New York. In a phone conversation, St. Agnes Cemetery does not have a record of a Samuel Mascari buried there. He was buried in the family plot (at his death in 1973) at the urging of his siblings. In September 1976, his wife Edith, moved his body to St. Mary's Cemetery in Wilkes Barre, PA.
11-04-1998: Burial plot of the family of Josephine Mascari shows that Samuel Mascari was buried in the family plot and later moved to Wilkes-Barre, PA. Death certificate of his wife, Edith, lists her entombment as St. Mary's Cemetery; Hanover Township, PA (Wilkes-Barre area).
Address at time of death was 12 Beech Street, Mountain Top, Pennsylvania 18702
Burial: Later moved from St. Agnes Cemetery to St. Mary's Cemetery; Wilkes Barre, PA (29 Sep 1976).
