Fielding SALYER:
Born 11 March 1805, Knox Co, KY

St. Paul is situated upon Sections 4 and 5, Township 13 north, Range 26 west, originally entered by Fielding SALYER and William ADE. The former came from Floyd Co., KY. in 1849. ADE subsequently removed to Texas, and at the time when the town was first thought of, J. P. SALYER was the sole owner of the site. In the spring of 1887 when it was decided to extend the Fayetteville branch of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway, this farm was noticed with favor by the projectors of the road as its terminus. The river at this point pursues its course at the base of the hills on the south, thus leaving a wide and sloping area, well situated for the purpose. The railroad was opened to the town of Powell, eight miles distant, July 15, 1887. At that time, the house of Mr. SALYER was the only dwelling in the place. A. B. LEWIS build a box shanty in June 1887, and opened the first store. The first house was built by Charles PIERCE in the same month, and was also occupied as a store building. July 20, 1887, J. P. SALYER began business, and G. H. DAVIS a little earlier. The first year of its history finds St. Paul provided with more than a dozen places of business, as follows: J. P. SALYERS groceries and hardware, etc... After Fielding killed his brother-in-law, Wiley MORGAN, he fled to Arkansas. QUESTION: Could Margaret ACUFF and Margaret be the same person? Both have the same death date.

Jennifer Irene Dredfulwater (greenbean74401@yahoo.com) in Muskogee, OK writes that her 4th gr/grandfather was David D. Salyer who married Susanna “Susa” Fletcher Arnett Miles. Their son, Isaiah “Zer” Salyer married Polly Ann Carpenter and their son Gus Salyer was born in 1892 in KY.
David D. Salyer b. 1817 d. 1880 was buried in the Allen Cemetery at Fredville here in Magoffin County. He was the son of William M. Salyer b. 1776 d. 1854 and his first wife, Nancy Raney. William M. m. 2nd to Dorcas Patton in 1843.
David D. married on 6 Apr 1837 Floyd Co. KY to Susanna Miles, a daughter of Elizabeth Miles. Some descendants claim she was an Arnett.
The David Salyer family is found in the 1850 Floyd Co. KY census and in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records of Magoffin County.
In 1880, Isaiah Salyer is given as head of household but his parents; David Salyer age 63 and Susan age 60 are listed in the household. Isaiah is age 22 and his wife Polly is age 20. They have children Cora Salyer age 5, Gholson Salyer age 2, and Catherine Salyer age 7 months.
There is no 1890 extant census for Magoffin County so if your grandfather Gus Salyer was born in 1892 in Kentucky he was probably born here in Magoffin. I don’t find Isaiah in the 1900 or later census records of Magoffin and birth records did not materialize until 1911.
William M. Salyer was a son of Isaiah Salyer, Sr. b. 1752 and d. 2 Dec 1818. His wife was Mary -?- b. in Russell Co. VA.
David Salyer has a number of descendants in the southeast portion of the county and is buried on a hill near where he lived. One of his descendants, Connie Wireman, has been searching for the burial site of his wife, Susannah (Arnett/Miles). Was she buried beside her husband or did she travel west with her son Isaiah’s family?
Burial: The cemetery is located in the David Quadrangle, about 200 ft. above Hade Allen Cemetery, 1/8 mi. north of the Fredville post office on Hwy. 7. This cemetery is also known as the Bailey Cemetery. Laurie McKenzie visited David's grave on Labor Day, 1998.
