I'm just saving Connie Wireman's response to a deed I posted at Magoffin Co Deeds site until I can figure out where it fits in the database:
Posted by Connie Wireman on Thu, 14 Sep 2000, in response to Deed from John H Howard & Susanna Howard to Samuel Howard, posted by Laurie McKenzie on Sun, 23 Apr 2000
I believe this John H. Howard is the one we descendants commonly refer to as John E. Howard although his tombstone on the Howard Fork of Licking in Magoffin Co. KY has his name as John H. Howard. John H. Howard was b. in 1829 Floyd Co. KY, the son of John Howard and Nancy Cameron. He married Susannah Shepherd b. 1832, dau of Jacob Shepherd and Elizabeth Hale. We believe she is buried on the same cemetery as her husband but there is no marked gravesite. The Samuel Howard mentioned in the deed is probably one of their 14 children.

Buried Royalton, Magoffin Co, KY at Mouth of Howard's Branch Cemete6
Birth: This birthdate is based on information gleaned from the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Tombstone says 1820. Magoffin Co., KY Historical Society "Howards of Eastern Kentucky" p. 154, gives ca 1822 as date of birth. In the Floyd Co, KY census, there is a female between the ages of 10-15.
Burial: This cemetery is in the David Quadrangle across the river at intersection of KY 7 and Howard's Branch Road. Deathdate is not given on the cemetery stone.
Married 11 July 1875, Floyd Co, KY8
Mary Greer:
Born ABT 18559
Another letter from Judy -?- (I misplaced the envelope), asked for help on identifying Samuel Howard's 2nd wife Mary Calloway. Mary was born in North Carolina. Judy thinks Mary's first husband was a Calloway and that she was a Greer before her marriage to the unknown Calloway. Judy's great grandmother was Laura Calloway b. ca. 1860. Her grandfather's death certificate says his mother is Laura Greer but the marriage certificate for Laura and William Marsillett in 1881 Floyd Co. KY gives her name as Laura Calloway.
Samuel Howard first married Delaney Jones. The 1880 Magoffin census lists Samuel Howard at age 68, wife Mary (Greer or Calloway) age 40, with Joseph age 4 (a son of Sam Howard and Jane Stone), Ida age 4, and a child not named age 1.
The 1870 Floyd census lists James Greer, age 59, b. NC, Eliza (McGuire) age 62, b. NC, Mary Conway (Calloway?), age 25, b. NC, Jane age 12, Luana (Laura?) age 9, and James E. age 6. Laura married William Marsillett in 1881 according to the 1900 Floyd County KY census on page 59.
The 1880 Floyd census has James Greer, Sr. age 69, Eliza age 72, and a grandson James Greer, Jr. age 17.
I think Mary was a Greer who married a Calloway, but who was this Calloway?

My information is second hand. I have Jack, Leander and Breckenridge Howard born to Lewis Howard and Catherine Shepherd. I do not know if Lewis is his given name? His wife is the daughter of David and Nancy Stone Shepherd. David died about the time of the Civil war and Nancy married my Great Grandfather Henry Patton. Nancy supposedly had a wooden leg. She is in the 1910 census of Floyd Co.,Ky with her son James Patton. I am told that Woots Coburn killed James on Christmas day of 1914. Near the mouth of Lick Fork on Salt Lick Creek. I would like to know more about this incident. My Conley kin, on up the creek, were a little rough on the neighbors also. :-)
Catherine and Lewis supposedly went to Michigan by Covered wagon and, oddly, she had a leg removed also. Her death occurred in 1896.
Breckenridge married Nancy Elaine Shepherd in 1904. They are in the 1910 Floyd Co.,Ky census. Corrections welcome and necessary Herb

Lewis Howard b. DEC 23,1861, is the son of John E. Howard (parents-John Howard & Nancy Cameron) & Susannah Shepherd (parents-Jacob Shepherd & Elizabeth Hale). Lewis Howard had three sons with Kate Shepherd: Brack, Jack, & Alamander . Eleven children were born to Lewis Howard & Emma Hale: Jack, Alamander, Russell, Reuben, Victor Hugo, Milton, Morton, Proctor, Ben, Troy, Bertha Ellen & Chester Howard. I have Kate Shepherd b. about 1865, the daughter of David Shepherd & Nancy Stone. Kate (b.1865) was reported to have married Jackson Bailey. Kate is not listed in the 1900 census. Jackson Bailey m. Elizabeth Vanderpool in 1895. Three children were born to Jackson Bailey & Kate Shepherd: Alexander, Sally & Della Bailey. My mother descends from the Shepherd clan. Correction is appreciated.
P.S. John E. Howard b. in 1846, the son of Lewis Howard & Elizabeth Shepherd. He was known as Horse Tradin' Johnny.
He married his first cousin Polly Ann Salyer AUG 29,1867 in Magoffin County, KY.
From Theresa Conley - dtconley@bright.net
thank you for your response! I'm going to look into the Woots Coburn story, (love that name), you have me curious about it now. I grew up in the Salt Lick area, before moving to Ohio many many years ago. No need to mention those ornery Conleys, I married into the Magoffin clan.
This Howard line has me going in circles. I've learned that Lewis and Catherine, or Kate were the boy's parents. One relative that contacted me this morning through a lookup program, tells me that they think Kate and Lewis divorced, and he married Emma Hale, sometime around 1888, fathering seven more children in Ky. Others tell me that Kate then remarried to a Jackson Bailey, and gave birth to three more children, before dying in 1896. I'm trying to find Lewis in the older census reports, to see if I can find out who his parents where. Nothing seems to be adding up for me.
More from Herb Gayheart:
I spent many weekends on Salt Lick. I lived at Hueysville/Bosco in the late 40's and then on Reed Branch which is just south.
My Grandmother was Claudia Conley who's parents lived near the head of Salt Lick which is in Knott Co. John Morgan Conley, her father ran a store, the post office,Saw mill,Grist mill there. He was married to Phoebe Jane Coburn or "Coon" as she was called. John Morgan said tha "I went hunting for a wife and caught a coon"; and the name stuck. :-) My Uncle Chester Gayheart said that he visited the store one day and John Morgan had the saw running, corn grinding on the mill and was waiting on a customer in the store. Now that is hyper! The post office was at Handshoe,Ky.
There was another store just above My Woots (there is that name again) Gayheart's home. I think it was run by the Handshoes. Sophia Patton was his second wife. You may recall that the stores on Salt Lick were not generally open until someone "hollered" out to the owner who always lived near by.
I think that the Woots Coburn in question may be the Woots who married my GGaunt Sarah Conley, daughter of John Deaton Conley and LeEsther Lawhorn. Sarah died in 1910 and Woots married Rosie Howard some time later.
I had Jackson Bailey marrying Catherine aft 1910. Three Children. Alex,Sarah,Della. I did not know about a second marriage for Lewis? Do you have a good birth date for Lewis. I have two or three born near 1860 with no parents.
Another message from Herb:
Folks
It would have been ok if Catherine Shepherd had a wooden leg like her mother, or it would have been ok if she didn't and had gone to Michigan----BUT!! Not only did she have two good legs; she did not have a covered wagon and never moved to Michigan!!!:-) Somebody pulled mine!! Sorry 'bout that cuz. Herb with the wooden head.
