I'm just saving Connie Wireman's response to a deed I posted at Magoffin Co Deeds site until I can figure out where it fits in the database:
Posted by Connie Wireman on Thu, 14 Sep 2000, in response to Deed from John H Howard & Susanna Howard to Samuel Howard, posted by Laurie McKenzie on Sun, 23 Apr 2000
I believe this John H. Howard is the one we descendants commonly refer to as John E. Howard although his tombstone on the Howard Fork of Licking in Magoffin Co. KY has his name as John H. Howard. John H. Howard was b. in 1829 Floyd Co. KY, the son of John Howard and Nancy Cameron. He married Susannah Shepherd b. 1832, dau of Jacob Shepherd and Elizabeth Hale. We believe she is buried on the same cemetery as her husband but there is no marked gravesite. The Samuel Howard mentioned in the deed is probably one of their 14 children.

Nancy HOWARD {F} = Elmore Smith WHITAKER {M} > Family
Married 18624
Nancy HOWARD:
Elmore Smith WHITAKER:
Born 18465
Occupation: Minister
Russell Wireman, 116 S. Broad St., Hellam, PA 17406 wrote to say he was trying to locate some of his relatives who still live in the area. His grandfather was Smith WHITAKER who married Martha Rebecca Hurt. They had only one child Florence Mae, sometimes listed as Forest Rose Lee Mae Whitaker who married Jake Wireman b. 1908, son of Russell Wireman b. 1879 and Martha Shepherd.
Martha Rebecca Hurt was born in 1869 (according to the 1870 Pike Co. KY census) and was the dau of Creed F. Hurt b. 1837 and m. in 1861 Pike Co. KY to Sarah Williamson. She was born in 1847 to Harmon Williamson b. 1826 and Anna Bevins b. 1827.
Creed Hurt was the son of Absolem Hurt b. 1803 and his 1st wife whom he married in 1823. She was Ann Samples, dau of William Samples and Nancy Wilson. He m. 2nd in 1849 to Elizabeth Bevins, b. 1814, dau of John Bevins and Mary Stacy.
Absolem Hurt was born in Washington Co. VA to Garland Hurt and Marteshia Thurston.
Elmore Smith Whitaker was the son of Johnson Whitaker b. 1792 and Susanna
(Arnett) Howard b. 1796, dau of Celia Howard and presumably Stephen Arnett.
Johnson Whitaker is believed to be the son of Mark R. Whitaker, a son of a Methodist preacher of Russell Co. VA. Johnson's mother, Martha "Patsy" Whitaker, was a teacher and is buried at the mouth of Puncheon in a lost cemetery with the early Arnetts and Howards of that area.
Smith Whitaker's first family consisted of Delaney m. Woots Allen, Susan m. Walker Allen, Farisee m. Green Shepherd, Laura Belle m. Haden Allen, Betty "Monk" m. Irvin Allen and Siney m. Hatcher Allen.
The 1910 census lists Smith's wife of two years as Martha, age 40 with Elizabeth age 12, step-dau Ida age 10, and grandson Mexico Shepherd age 14. Martha is the mother of 8 children with 6 living.
According to Russell, Martha m. 1. Eli Allen and their children were Patton Allen, Mack, Ida, John, Lizzie, and Rose. The 1920 census shows Smith Whitaker age 73, Martha age 40 with daughter Forest (Rose) age 7. (Information from Todd Preston's column of the August 13, 1998 issue of the SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.)
Elizabeth\Betty (Peggy) HOWARD {F} = Nelson B SALYER6 {M} > Family
Married 12 June 1860, Floyd Co, KY7
Elizabeth\Betty (Peggy) HOWARD:
Born January 1844, Floyd Co, KY
Died BET 1920 AND 1928, Fredville, Magoffin Co, KY
Birth: Part of Floyd Co. became Magoffin Co. in 1860.
Death: 1999 - No primary proof yet exists as to Elizabeth's parentage. Although Magoffin County Historical Society has said that Betty is the "dau of Sam," a requested Kentucky death certificate for Betty/Elizabeth Salyer returned a death certificate for an Elizabeth Salyer whose parents were Ben Howard and Susan Allen; a birth date of 15 Sept 1846 was given. The date of death given is 19 Oct 1922. The year 1922 is consistent with the information given by Connie Wireman to Laurie McKenzie. Although the death certificate states that Elizabeth Salyer was married, no husband's name is given. The sudden death of Elizabeth was attributed to "heart dropsey." I have listed Elizabeth's (Betty) deathdate as being between 1920 - when she was on the census - and 1928 when her husband, Nelson, died. Nelson was listed as a widower at the time of his death. NOTE: Barbara Greene, Ezra Parker, DAR (Royal Oak, MI) found proof of Elizabeth as daughter of Samuel Howard for my application to the DAR.

My husband's maternal grandmother was Martha (Bradford) Howard who married Edward (Ned) Ousley. She also was a child of William (Doc) Howard and Louisa Bradford. William was married at least 3 times but to the best of my knowledge Louisa never married. She and William had at least 6 children together. Louisa Bradford was the daughter of Saunders and Sarah Ann (Pridemore) Bradford. In the KY Vital Statistics whenever Martha would have a baby, sometimes she gave her maiden name as Howard and at other times it would be Bradford? Also, I have that Fairish "Fair" Shepherd did marry a Lourany Howard. Lourany was a child of William Doc Howard and his 2nd wife, Eliza Jane Johnson. If you need anymore information just let me know.
