SALYER
Parents
Sebastian Bass SALYER1 {M} = Nancy Jane ALLEN {F}
Married 20 November 1880, Magoffin Co, KY2
Sebastian Bass SALYER:
Born 7 December 1861, Fredville, Magoffin Co, KY
Died 9 November 1901, Paintsville, Johnson Co, KY
Buried Galdia, Magoffin Co, KY at Sebastian Salyer Cemetery3
Occupation: Deputy County Clerk
Birth: Licking Station referred to the area around Salyersville, KY. Before 1860, Morgan Co. (formed 1823) came to about the center of Salyersville. West of this line was Morgan Co. East of this line was Floyd Co.
Death: Sebastian died after being ambushed. The story is that he had a disagreement with someone during an election. Sebastian walked away and the other person followed him and stabbed him. "Bass" ultimately bled to death. Nothing was done about the knifing since the other fellow had relatives who had high official standing in Salyersville. You can't fight city hall!
Burial: This cemetery is located in the David Quadrangle - about 1-1/4 mile on right from mouth of Long Branch off KY 7. On 30 Aug 1997, Arnoldis "Noddie" SALYER Lamb and Laurie SCARPACE McKenzie climbed the mountain where their great grandfather, Sebastian "Bass" SALYER, is buried. The cemetery is so overgrown that they had to hack their way to it. As a matter of fact, they had to hack their way down from the road to the creek, first! Then they had to find rocks to walk on to get across the creek - and then fight through all kinds of brush - wild raspberries and roses - as they climbed up the hill to the cemetery. Laurie carried a golf club, in case of snakes, and her 'cemetery' bag filled with supplies: regular gardening tools including grass/weed shears and brushes and a kneeling pad. Shaving cream was used on the markers to read the faint writing. They even had to go through barbed wire, then find a way over the fence which was around the cemetery. Of all the times to not take a pair of jeans! Laurie wore the lined pants from a warm-up suit and borrowed a denim shirt! Even so, chiggers got to her. Sebastian's mother-in-law, Sally ALLEN, is there, too, as is his daughter, Susie. Eight people are buried there all tolled. Photographs of all of the markers were taken.
Census Date: 1900
Census Place: Salyersville, Magoffin Co, KY
At the time of the 1900 U.S. Census, S.B. owned his farm free and clear. He may have rented some of his land to an Allen family who could have been his wife's parents or brother. More research needs to be done. The only member of his family at that time who had schooling was Susie, who according to the census report was "at school." However, it was also noted that all members of the family were able to read, write and speak English.

Nancy Jane ALLEN:
Born 31 March 1866, Fredville, Magoffin Co, KY
Died 9 June 1950, Fredville, Magoffin Co, KY4
Buried 11 June 1950, Salyersville, Magoffin Co, KY at Blue Grass Cemetery5
Birth: Date of birth was 31 Mar 1866 according to Prater & Dunn Funeral Home records which says that Nancy Jane lived 84 yrs, 2 mos, 9 days. Nancy Jane died of "apoplexy of the brain."
Burial: Nancy Jane is buried next to her second husband, Will Press POWER. Their daughter Madeline POWER Arnett is buried nearby. Another daughter, Ethel Mae POWER Flint also will be buried in a plot next to her husband, William E. Flint.
Children
Boy SALYER {M}
Born ABT 1881, Long Creek, Magoffin Co, KY
Birth: The 1900 Census indicates that Nancy Jane had 4 children, 3 of whom were living. According to Agnes ARNETT Howard, Nancy Jane's granddaughter, Nancy Jane was pregnant and took a ride in a cart and lost the baby. This was her only boy.
Bertha Maria SALYER6 {F} = Nelson N SALYER7 {M} > Family
Married 14 July 1898, Magoffin Co, KY8
Divorced 11 May 1900, Magoffin Co, KY9
Bertha Maria SALYER:
Born 16 September 1882, Wireman, Magoffin Co, KY
Died 28 February 1952, Ypsilanti, Washtenaw Co, MI at Beyer Memorial Hospital10
Buried 3 March 1952, Detroit, Wayne Co, MI at Grand Lawn Cemetery
Birth: A Notification of Birth Registration states that Bertha Maria Salyers was born in Welch, WV., which is untrue. Bertha was born in Magoffin Co., KY.
Death: As of 1996, Beyer Memorial Hospital is Oakwood Health Care Center. The State of Michigan had no record of her death. On 2 July 1997, Bertha's granddaughter, Laurie SCARPACE McKenzie, finally obtained a death certificate from Washtenaw County, MI. On the certificate, 7311 Floral, Garden City is listed as her place of residence. The County promised to notify the State about the oversight. Bertha died of a heart block. Antecedent causes were auricular fibrillation and uncontrolled diabetes. She also was diagnosed with mellitus for 40 years. Bertha was 69 yrs, 5 mos, 12 days old.
Burial: There is a marker at Grand Lawn Cemetery, Grand River near Telegraph, Detroit, MI: Sec 20, Lot 21, Gr. 3. Her daughters, Orval & Olga, are there also. Bertha was mother to five (5) children: Helen, Carmen, Kermit, Orval and Olga. A grandson, Bob Looper, believes there was another daughter, Dottie. No substantiation can be found. In a letter written by Helen to her youngest sister, Olga, Helen refers to their deceased sister, Orval, as "Dobbie." Perhaps, this is what Bob Looper remembers. Bertha was a Detroit Street Car Conductorette during both World Wars. At one time she was part-owner of the Blue Moon, a bar-restaurant in Detroit. Daughter Helen could often be found helping out in the kitchen. Patty POYE Irvin remembers that she and her brother Kenny often sang in the tavern.
Census Date: 1930
Census Place: Detroit, Wayne Co, MI
ED: 82-350, Sheet 18-A. 3042 W. Warren
Grandma Bertha is listed as Bertha Bankhead/Burkheart; age 38, head of house; not married; 18 yrs old at last marriage; she was born in PA; both of her parents were born in TX. Also in the house was: Nettie/Netta Bankhead/Burkheart, her brother. Grandma Bertha did not have a brother! However her niece Phinetta was called Nettie/Netta. Phinetta was the daughter of Bertha's sister Susie. Nettie/Netta is listed 24 yrs old and single. In fact, Nettie/Netta was born in 1911 in KY. His/her birthplace was also listed as PA and his/her parents were born in TX. Nettie/Netta's parents were born in KY. She/he is listed as a truck driver. The third person at this address is Olga Poje - a roomer! 18 yrs old, also single; born in WV as were her parents. At least they got this last part correct! Mother was a stenographer with an insurance company - which was probably also correct.
The question arises - where is Frank Weiss? He should have been in the household too! There is a Frank Weiss listed in Iron Mountain, MI in the 1930 census. Perhaps he was there working in a copper mine.
Residence: 7311 Floral St.
Residence Date: BET 1948 AND 1952
Residence Place: Garden City, Wayne Co, MI
Bertha & Chester kept chickens in the backyard. Garden City does not acknowledge a street named Floral. Patricia POYE Irvin recalls that it was off Warren, west of Inkster Rd. The street was incorporated into Westland in 1966. The assessor's office believes that area may have been part of Nankin Twp. at the time of their residence. Two of Olga's children confirm Patty's recollection. Further, Bertha's death certificate lists Garden City as the place of residence at the time of her death.

Dear Laurie--
Obergras (Trava) is a village which was part of the Gottschee district. Today the area is called Slovenia, known by its Slovene name, Kocevje. Obergras is in the township of Obergras and the parish is Suchen. If you go to the LDS center by you they have the films from the parish and you can find births, deaths, and marriages. You can also go on-line to http://www.gottschee.org you will find the Gottschee Heritage and Genealogical Society. My ancestors' parish was Nesslthal and I have traced my family roots with their listings of LDS films.
Good Luck! Doreen

According to the Ellis Island records online: Passenger 442 was Anton Poje, age 29, a workman, immigrated to Boston, MA on 13 June 1894 on the ship Rugia. His ethnicity was Poland, he resided in Gottschee. The port of departure was Hamburg, Germany. Everything above fits what I know about my grandfather - except his age.
Passenger 435 was Gohan Poje, age 32, workman. This man was also Polish, resided in Gottschee, port of departure was Hamburg, Germany. However Gohan landed in New York.
Were they brothers? Related at all? Poje was a very common name in the Gotschee area.

Census Date: 1930

(ED 491, page 18A and 18B) as Anton Poye, age 51, divorced, born in Germany. He is listed as father to the head of household, Kermit age 24, married at 21 and born in W. Virginia, father in Germany and mother in Kentucky. Wife is Stella, age 23, married at 21, born in Michigan. Kermit has a daughter named Patricia, aged 1 5/12 born in Michigan. They rent their residence at 4705 Brandon for $30.00 a month. Carmen Smetana, age 26, born in West Virginia, father in Germany and mother in Kentucky, and husband John also live at this address. They pay $35.00 a month rent.

Occupation: This information is based on census answers.
Residence: 338 Clinton
Residence Date: 1917
Residence Place: Detroit, Wayne Co, MI
338 Clinton is the first mention of Tony Poye in Detroit. He lived on Clinton for only one year. Since finding this listing in the R.L. Polk City of Detroit Directory, Laurie McKenzie has also found that the directory may be as much as 2 yrs behind in its time frame.
Residence: 443 McKinstry Ave.
Residence Date: 1918/19
Residence Place: Detroit, Wayne Co, MI
443 McKinstry Ave. was the 3rd house from Orleans. There was another resident in the upper flat.
Residence: 4705 Brandon
Residence Date: BET 1920 AND 1938
Residence Place: Detroit, Wayne Co, MI
4705 Brandon was Tony's 3rd home in Detroit. His occupation was machinist. There must have been what could only be called a 'family compound' on Brandon because various members of the family remember living on Brandon at the same time. The address was changed from 267 Brandon in 1920 - after the census was taken.

On February 25, 1998, Laurie McKenzie purchased the certified copy of a death certificate which shows a Frank Weiss of 1007 West Brown St died Dec. 13, 1935. Perhaps this certificate is not for the Frank Weiss who was married to Bertha. His date of birth is shown as Sep 19, 1880 in Austria. The informant is only listed as Mrs. Frank Weiss. It is not known at this time if Frank and Bertha, in fact, lived in Iron Mountain. The death certificate lists Frank's kind of work as "laborer." More work needs to be done.
