Dear Laurie--
Obergras (Trava) is a village which was part of the Gottschee district. Today the area is called Slovenia, known by its Slovene name, Kocevje. Obergras is in the township of Obergras and the parish is Suchen. If you go to the LDS center by you they have the films from the parish and you can find births, deaths, and marriages. You can also go on-line to http://www.gottschee.org you will find the Gottschee Heritage and Genealogical Society. My ancestors' parish was Nesslthal and I have traced my family roots with their listings of LDS films.
Good Luck! Doreen

According to the Ellis Island records online: Passenger 442 was Anton Poje, age 29, a workman, immigrated to Boston, MA on 13 June 1894 on the ship Rugia. His ethnicity was Poland, he resided in Gottschee. The port of departure was Hamburg, Germany. Everything above fits what I know about my grandfather - except his age.
Passenger 435 was Gohan Poje, age 32, workman. This man was also Polish, resided in Gottschee, port of departure was Hamburg, Germany. However Gohan landed in New York.
Were they brothers? Related at all? Poje was a very common name in the Gotschee area.

Occupation: This information is based on census answers.
Residence: 338 Clinton
Residence Date: 1917
Residence Place: Detroit, Wayne Co, MI
338 Clinton is the first mention of Tony Poye in Detroit. He lived on Clinton for only one year. Since finding this listing in the R.L. Polk City of Detroit Directory, Laurie McKenzie has also found that the directory may be as much as 2 yrs behind in its time frame.
Residence: 443 McKinstry Ave.
Residence Date: 1918/19
Residence Place: Detroit, Wayne Co, MI
443 McKinstry Ave. was the 3rd house from Orleans. There was another resident in the upper flat.
Residence: 4705 Brandon
Residence Date: BET 1920 AND 1938
Residence Place: Detroit, Wayne Co, MI
4705 Brandon was Tony's 3rd home in Detroit. His occupation was machinist. There must have been what could only be called a 'family compound' on Brandon because various members of the family remember living on Brandon at the same time. The address was changed from 267 Brandon in 1920 - after the census was taken.

Bertha Maria SALYER:
Born 16 September 1882, Wireman, Magoffin Co, KY
Died 28 February 1952, Ypsilanti, Washtenaw Co, MI at Beyer Memorial Hospital8
Buried 3 March 1952, Detroit, Wayne Co, MI at Grand Lawn Cemetery
Birth: A Notification of Birth Registration states that Bertha Maria Salyers was born in Welch, WV., which is untrue. Bertha was born in Magoffin Co., KY.
Death: As of 1996, Beyer Memorial Hospital is Oakwood Health Care Center. The State of Michigan had no record of her death. On 2 July 1997, Bertha's granddaughter, Laurie SCARPACE McKenzie, finally obtained a death certificate from Washtenaw County, MI. On the certificate, 7311 Floral, Garden City is listed as her place of residence. The County promised to notify the State about the oversight. Bertha died of a heart block. Antecedent causes were auricular fibrillation and uncontrolled diabetes. She also was diagnosed with mellitus for 40 years. Bertha was 69 yrs, 5 mos, 12 days old.
Burial: There is a marker at Grand Lawn Cemetery, Grand River near Telegraph, Detroit, MI: Sec 20, Lot 21, Gr. 3. Her daughters, Orval & Olga, are there also. Bertha was mother to five (5) children: Helen, Carmen, Kermit, Orval and Olga. A grandson, Bob Looper, believes there was another daughter, Dottie. No substantiation can be found. In a letter written by Helen to her youngest sister, Olga, Helen refers to their deceased sister, Orval, as "Dobbie." Perhaps, this is what Bob Looper remembers. Bertha was a Detroit Street Car Conductorette during both World Wars. At one time she was part-owner of the Blue Moon, a bar-restaurant in Detroit. Daughter Helen could often be found helping out in the kitchen. Patty POYE Irvin remembers that she and her brother Kenny often sang in the tavern.

Grandma Bertha is listed as Bertha Bankhead/Burkheart; age 38, head of house; not married; 18 yrs old at last marriage; she was born in PA; both of her parents were born in TX. Also in the house was: Nettie/Netta Bankhead/Burkheart, her brother. Grandma Bertha did not have a brother! However her niece Phinetta was called Nettie/Netta. Phinetta was the daughter of Bertha's sister Susie. Nettie/Netta is listed 24 yrs old and single. In fact, Nettie/Netta was born in 1911 in KY. His/her birthplace was also listed as PA and his/her parents were born in TX. Nettie/Netta's parents were born in KY. She/he is listed as a truck driver. The third person at this address is Olga Poje - a roomer! 18 yrs old, also single; born in WV as were her parents. At least they got this last part correct! Mother was a stenographer with an insurance company - which was probably also correct.
The question arises - where is Frank Weiss? He should have been in the household too! There is a Frank Weiss listed in Iron Mountain, MI in the 1930 census. Perhaps he was there working in a copper mine.
Residence: 7311 Floral St.
Residence Date: BET 1948 AND 1952
Residence Place: Garden City, Wayne Co, MI
Bertha & Chester kept chickens in the backyard. Garden City does not acknowledge a street named Floral. Patricia POYE Irvin recalls that it was off Warren, west of Inkster Rd. The street was incorporated into Westland in 1966. The assessor's office believes that area may have been part of Nankin Twp. at the time of their residence. Two of Olga's children confirm Patty's recollection. Further, Bertha's death certificate lists Garden City as the place of residence at the time of her death.

Helen's youngest sister, Olga, and Olga's daughter, Laurie, were at the cremation. Fortunately, families are no longer in attendance at cremations. Olga was aghast at the whole procedure. After the service Laurie remembers going with her mother to Joyce's and Jim's house. Joyce placed the urn with her mother's remains on the living room mantle. In September, 1997, Laurie visited Evergreen Cemetery and discovered that Helen's remains are still there. Helen & William Goldmann bought land on Wild Fowl Bay, a finger of Saginaw Bay, built a house for themselves and sold lots for cottages. Their house was a favorite visiting spot for nieces, nephews and grandchildren and their parents. The children were allowed to explore the "wilds" and fish the inlet. Laurie and Freddie Scarpace remember catching their first fish there. An article in the Blade-Crescent of Sebewing (September 26, 1963) shows Helen with her collection of international dolls as part of an exhibit for the 18th Anniversary of the United Nations put on by the Bay Port Woman's Club. Her granddaughter, Sheree (Watt) Schalte currently has the collection on display at her home. On 13 Oct 1996, Laurie and Sheree visited the house. The current owner (1996) is Gerald (Jerry) Himmell, a retired Detroit Police Officer. He remembers watching the house being built as a youngster and was pleased to find it on the market when he returned "home" from Detroit. The house now sports a sauna, a dining room (formerly a Florida room where Helen worked on her crafts) and an enlarged living room with a bay window from which to view the outdoors. The garage floor has foot and handprints dated 1948: Helen, Willy, Joyce, Jim, Duffy and Bob and Alice (by proxy). Grandson, Kim Watt, has many memories of Helen and "Liebling," Willie. As a child he remembers visiting before the Goldmanns had developed the property. He and Sheree used to swim and fish in the inlet. Once they visited a local farm for fresh chickens and eggs; Kim ended up with a chicken foot. Pulling the tendon would make the toes curl; it made Sheree so sick she wouldn't eat chicken or eggs for many years. Son, Bob Looper, never lived here but visited fairly often and always enjoyed it.

Olga left school - without telling anyone - on 13 Dec 1929 (her 16th birthday) and went to work for R. P. Jones Insurance Co. as a secretary. Olga took the job as part of a class project. Three weeks later, the school telephoned her mother and asked why Olga was not in school. Her mother was shocked - thinking Olga had been attending school regularly. When confronted, Olga replied that since she had the job, there was no longer any reason for her to be in school. Wrong! Sort of. The school made special arrangements for Olga to graduate, early - in January - since she did indeed have enough credits. Armed with the diploma she left Jones Insurance 12 Mar 1930 to go to work for Creage Co. After only a month she left Creage Co. to work for Chrysler Corp. She worked at Chrysler Corp. until the family started arriving.

Family
In addition to searching Magoffin Co., KY, Johnson Co., KY and Floyd Co., KY earlier, 9 Sep 1998 was spent by Laurie McKenzie and "Noddie" Lamb looking for their marriage license/certificate. A trip was made to Ashland and Catlettsburg, both in Boyd Co. KY, Huntington, Cabell Co., WV and Charleston, WV, the state capitol. Several counties including McDowell Co., WV were searched to no avail.
Marriage: As of May, 2000, no marriage license has been found. When researching for a record of their divorce, Laurie Scarpace McKenzie found the divorce record. It stated the date of marriage used here and that the marriage took place in Virginia. So far (May 2000) no record of the marriage in that state has been found. Of course, Laurie has only looked in KY, OH and WV.
Divorce: 2 Jun 1921 was the date of filing for the divorce. Bertha Poje was the complaintant. The alleged causes were: Cruelty and non-support - typical for the era.
