Rosario MASCARI1 {M} = Biaga LONGO2 {F}
Married BET 1884 AND 1886, Termini Imerese, Sicily
Rosario MASCARI:
Born ABT July 1855, Termini Imerese, Sicily
Died 24 March 1932, Rochester, Monroe Co, NY
Buried 28 March 1932, Rochester, Monroe Co, NY at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery
Occupation: Fruit Dealer - as listed on his death certificate
Death: 24 Mar 1932: Obituary obtained from the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, Friday March 25, 1932. Obituary notes that Rosario entered in rest at his residence, 14 McFarlin Street on Thursday, March 24, 1932. He leaves three sons, Anthony, Paul and Sam; four daughters Mrs. Phillip Sansone, Mrs. Anthony Brescia, Mrs. Philip Cianciolo and Mrs. Mike Palmisano. Also, Three sisters: Mrs. Rosario Maschiri, Mrs. Augustino Caito of Batavia and Mrs. Mathew Purpura of Herkimer, NY.
Funeral services Monday March 28, 1932 at 8:30 AM from the home and 9:00 AM at Mt. Carmel Church. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
23 Jan 1999: Death certificate obtained and now on file from Monroe County (Rochester), NY. Certificate incorrectly lists his name as "Muscari," with an address (incorrectly) of 10 McFarlan St. It notes that he has been in the USA for 29 years (since 1903) and in Rochester for 29 years (since 1903). Date of birth is listed as "Unknown" and age is listed as 'about 65 yrs." (This would give him a year of birth as 1867, we are currently using a working date of July, 1855). His occupation is listed as "Fruit Dealer," for the past 15 years (since 1917) and was working in his occupation at the time of death. His parents are listed as Paolo Muscari (sic) and Maria Rine (sic), both being born in Termini Imerese. Informant for the certificate was his son, Sam Mascari (spelled correctly) of 152 3rd Street, Rochester. Undertaker was Jesse D. Cimino of 221 Central Park. Cause of death is "Acute dilatation of the heart - sudden" and "Chronic myocarditis - unreadable." In general, the certificate does not appear to be filled out very accurately.
23 Jan 1999: McFarlin Street is in an area near the old downtown main Post Office in Rochester, NY. It runs parallel to North Street and intersects with Weld Street (where his brother, Salvatore Matthew Mascari and his wife, Kathlyn, lived at 9 Weld St.). Weld Street runs off of North Street, about 2 blocks north of University. McFarlin Street currently has only 2 houses present, both appear to be of recent origins. It is difficult to determine exactly where 14 McFarlin used to be. The street probably only had 7 to 10 houses on it when it was active.
Occupation Date: BET 1917 AND 1932
Biaga LONGO:
Alias Bessie LONGO
Born 19 July 1870, Termini Imerese, Sicily
Died 26 November 1927, Rochester, Monroe Co, NY
Buried 28 November 1927, Rochester, Monroe Co, NY at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery
Death: He was 57 yrs, 4 mos, 7 days old.
26 Nov 1927: Obituary obtained from the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, Sunday November 27, 1927, p. 25. Obituary notes that Biaga "Bessie" Mascari passed away at the family home (no day or date of death listed) No. 14 McFarlin Street. She is survived by three sons: Paul, Anthony and Salvadore (sic) Mascari, all of Rochester, NY. Four daughters, Mrs. Mary Palmisano and Mrs. Madeline Bresia (sic) of Rochester; Mrs. Frances Cianciola of Milwaukee WI., and Mrs. Marguerite Sansone of Malone, NY. Also survived by two sisters, Mrs. N. Catalano of Milwaukee, Wis. and Mrs. M Mancanio of Syracuse, NY. Also survived by 14 grandchildren.
Funeral will take place on Monday morning, November 28, 1927 at 8;30 AM from the family home and 9:45 AM from Mt. Carmel Church. Burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
26 Nov 1927: Obituary listing also obtained from the Rochester Times Union Newspaper, Monday November 29, 1927, p. 24, which states that Bessie died on Saturday November 26, 1927 at her home. She was listed as being survived only by her three sons: Paul, Anthony and Salvadore (sic).
23 Jan 1999: Transcript of death certificate obtained and on file from Monroe County (Rochester), NY. Bessie's age is listed as 57 yrs, 4 months, 7 days, which would give her a birth date of July 19, 1870. Her parents are listed as Antonio Longo, born in Italy and Margaret Scarlatta, born in Italy. Informant for the certificate was her son, Paul A. Mascari of 12 McFarlin Street (next door!). Cause of death was "Heart - Mitral Insufficiency" with secondary cause listed as "Hemiplegia." She was treated by her Physician "from attack till death" August 10, 1927 to November 26, 1927. Since hemiplegia (paralysis on one side) is often the consequence of cerebrovascular accident (stroke), and since mitral valves are often associated with throwing off emboli (which then cause strokes), we might be able to safely assume that Biaga suffered a stroke on August 10, 1927 leaving her with paralysis on one side until death occurred on November 26th.
10 Jan 1999: Records of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery list her age at time of death as 57 yrs, giving her an approximate birth year of 1870, instead of 1861 as we previously had (1861 date supplied by Mary Palmisano, before her death). Also, records from Mary Palmisano and Philip Sansone (b. 1919) indicate that Biaga's sister Rosalie was married to Matthew Mercurio, so she is probably the "M. Mancanio of Syracuse," and Antonina was married to a Cianciolo, so she is probably the "N. Catalano of Milwaukee." Probably the "N." initial is correct but the Catalano is probably Cianciolo. (per Philip J Caito, Rochester, NY)

Paul A MASCARI:
Born 5 June 1887, Termini Imerese, Sicily
Died 16 May 1963, Syracuse, Onondaga Co, NY
Occupation: Cabinet Maker
1910 US Federal Census lists his place of birth as Italy and that he emigrated to the US in 1887 (this year does not make sense as this was the year of his birth and his mother did not emigrate with the children until 1903. He citizenship is listed as alien for this census. He can speak English and can read and write. His occupation is listed as employed as a floor foreman in a box factory.
1920 US Federal Census lists his address at 12 McFarlin St, next to his parents. He is 32 yrs old (b. 1887), emigrated to the US in 1900 and became a Naturalized US citizen in 1918. He is able to read and write and speak English. His occupation is listed as an operator in a camera factory for a wage (Kodak?).
The Rochester City Directory from 1910 to 1925 list Paul as follows:
1910 Paul Maschiri woodworker boards at: 12 McFarlin
1039 Jay St
1915 Paul Maschiri woodworker boards at: 12 McFarlin
1920-21 Paul Mascari(Liboria)wdwrker home: 12 McFarlin
1925 Paul Mascari(Liboria)wdwrker home: 12 McFarlin It is interesting to note that Paul is listed as boarding at 12 McFarlin, which is the home of his parents, according to the same directory. Perhaps he got married in 1914 (his son, Ray, is born in 1915), since he now lists his home at 12 McFarlin (with his wife, Liboria (Mercurio)), and his parents have moved to 14 McFarlin. 14 McFarlin was the listed address for the grocery business of his father.
