3. Elias ARNETT (David ) was born about 1780. He died after 1825.spouse: Fletcher, ? (*1785 - )
Elias does not appear in the 1810 Knox Co. census. His wife Elizabeth is living alone with their three Arnett children. It is not known why Elias was absent that year or where he was.
1810 Knox Co., KY census:
Elizabeth Arnett- 2 males under 10, 1 female 26-45, 1 female under 10
From 1811 to 1822 David Arnett paid taxes for a male over the age of 21. This may have been for his son Elias. Elias and his family are in the 1820 Harlan census. After 1820 Elias disappears and no more record of him can be found. He probably died between 1825-30 or else moved away, leaving behind his family.
1820 Harlan Co., KY census:
Elias Arnett- 1 male 26-45, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 10-16, 2 males under 10, 1 female 26-45, 1 female under 10
In about 1830 a woman named Elizabeth Fletcher showed up in Floyd Co., Kentucky (where Elias' brothers Stephen and Reuben had previously moved to). Stephen and Reuben Arnett helped Elizabeth Fletcher obtain land in Floyd Co. in 1830. She had five children with her in the 1830 census. Four of them (James, Mary "Polly", Celia, and Kelsey Nelson) also used the name Fletcher. But one of Elizabeth Fletcher's daughters, Susannah, went by the last name Miles. Susannah stated on her marriage license that she had no natural father.
Local legends in Floyd Co. indicate that there were originally three Arnett brothers who came to Floyd Co. Two of these brothers were Stephen and Reuben. Was the third Elias? All of Elizabeth Fletcher's children were told they were really Arnetts, even though they went by the name of their stepfather Fletcher. Local legend also indicates that Elizabeth Fletcher's maiden name was originally Miles.
1830 Floyd census:
Elizabeth Fletcher- 1 male 15-20, 1 male under 5, 1 female 40-49, 1 female 15-20, 2 females 5-10
It is my (DH) belief that Elizabeth Fletcher was really Elizabeth Miles (the widow of Elias Arnett). She apparently left her older 3 children (Elias, Telitha, and Barnett) behind in Harlan Co. with relatives, when she moved first to Tennessee and then to Floyd Co. Elizabeth either re-married to a Fletcher when Elias Arnett died, or she assumed the name Fletcher for some reason. Her younger five children were probably all really the children of Elias Arnett, with the possible exception of Susannah Miles.
Elias married Elizabeth MILES. Elizabeth was born 1785/1787. She died after 1870 in Magoffin County, Kentucky and was buried in Magoffin County, Kentucky.
BURIAL: Elizabeth is buried next to her son, Kelse Nelson Fletcher in Magoffin Co Kentucky.
Elias and Elizabeth had the following children:
+ 13 M i Elias ARNETT Jr. was born 17 Dec 1803 and died 14 Aug 1869.
+ 14 F ii Telitha Letty ARNETT was born 1806 and died.
+ 15 M iii Barnett ARNETT was born 6 Mar 1809 and died May 1895.
+ 16 F iv Polly FLETCHER was born 2 Oct 1812 and died after 1843.
+ 17 F v Susannah MILES was born 1820.
18 F vi Celia FLETCHER was born 1823.
Celia married Julius MEDLEY.
19 M vii Kelse N. FLETCHER was born 1825.
Kelse married Malinda ARNETT.
