Michigan quarter to debut Jan. 26
By Oralandar Brand-Williams / The Detroit News
DEARBORN - Jan. 26 can't come soon enough for James Marusak.
That's when Michigan's quarter will debut.
“This is a huge deal,” said coin collector Marusak, who manages Central Coin & Stamp Inc. on Ford Road. “I've been getting about 10 calls a day asking when the coin is going to be released.”
The first minting of the Michigan quarter began this week. It is the 26th coin to be released in the U.S. Mint's 50 State Quarters program, which began in 1999.
The U.S. Mint is printing the coins in the order the states were admitted to the union. Michigan was the 26th state, admitted Jan. 26, 1837.
The coin's Jan. 26 release will be marked with a state ceremony attended by Gov. Jennifer Granholm, the director of the U.S. Mint and other dignitaries. But the coin won't be widely available to banks and collectors until the first week of February.
The quarter's design, which features the entire state and the five Great Lakes, has created a lot of excitement, state officials say.
“We are among very few states that show the actual outline of the state and nothing else,” said Sarah Lapshan, the spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries.

a first-time Corvette owner

When Jim first began dating Lisa, he wanted to impress her with his Corvette. Instead of going outside through the front door of the house, she led him through the garage and what a surprise!! There sat her father's Corvettes. So much for making an impression! Hmmm -- does this mean that Jim is following in his father-in-law's footsteps?

- m. 4 JUL 1998 in Dearborn, Wayne Co, MI at Divine Child Catholic Church

Marriage Note

The reception was held at Warren Golf Club. Lisa "threw" her bouquet into the hands of her sister, Lucia. Jim "tossed" Lisa's garter into the hands of Dr. Bobby Meehan, Lucia's date. Dr. Bobby seemed unable to believe what was happening as he placed the garter on Lucia's leg. The DJ did a great job of keeping the guests on the dance floor - and sometimes not on the dance floor.

Original info supplied by Mary Palmisano (b. 1917) had a date of birth of May 1, 1896. SS Death Index (above) indicates a May 5th date. Since Francesca herself had to apply for the SS Card, the May 5th date is probably the accurate one.

Event Funeral - [date: 18 FEB 1944] [place: Batavia, Genesee Co, NY at St. Joseph Cemetery]

Birth Note

27 Aug 98: Approximate date of birth (1858) supplied by Anna Sansone Caito (b. 1897) to Patrice Caito in 1978. Her tombstone in St. Joseph's Cemetery also lists 1858 as the year of birth.

Death Note

30 Oct 1998: (per Paul J Caito, Rochester, NY) Death Certificate obtained from Pennsylvania notes date of birth as August 15, 1861; but the year 1861 was obviously added later as it does not match the style handwriting used on the rest of the death certificate. Her age is given as 83 yrs old at death, which would make 1861 correct but my guess is that the 1858 birth year is the more correct one, making her 85 yrs old at death. Death certificate notes that she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Edith Caito and Samuel Mascari, for 5 years, and their address at the time of her death was 36 N. Loveland Avenue. It further states that she had been in the USA for 36 years, so she arrived in the USA in 1908. It also notes that she had no Social Security Number. Death occurred at 7:00 AM as listed on the certificate and she had been ill since February 11th, 1944.

6 Dec 1998: (per Paul J Caito, Rochester, NY) phone conversation with Ann Marie Mascari Jones of Johnson City, NY: Ann Marie remembers that her family would travel from Wilkes-Barre, where they lived, to Batavia every summer to see her grandmother, Francis Caito. She remembers that they would often ask her to come down and stay with them in Wilkes-Barre but she never would. Grandmother Francis Caito finally did come down to live with them the year before she died and Ann Marie feels that her grandmother probably sensed that she may not have much time left, and so finally went to stay with her daughter and grandchild. Ann Marie remembers her grandmother as a very kind and gentle woman.

This record is the only substantiation of the birth year of Michiela Mascari Salamone at this time.

Birth Note

24 Oct 1939: Death certificate of his daughter, Lucia Maschiri, on this date, notes that her father (incorrectly listed as Rosario - actually Paolo) was born in Termini Imerese, Sicily.

6 Dec 1998: Phone conversation with Ann Marie Jones of Johnson City, NY remembers knowing that her great-grandfather had a large business involved in the canning of food in Sicily. He was evidently being threatened by the Mafia and, fearing for his family, and possibly his life, the family left Termini Imerese and emigrated to the USA.

1910 US Federal Census lists his place of birth as Italy and that he emigrated to the US in 1887 (this year does not make sense as this was the year of his birth and his mother did not emigrate with the children until 1903. He citizenship is listed as alien for this census. He can speak English and can read and write. His occupation is listed as employed as a floor foreman in a box factory.

1920 US Federal Census lists his address at 12 McFarlin St, next to his parents. He is 32 yrs old (b. 1887), emigrated to the US in 1900 and became a Naturalized US citizen in 1918. He is able to read and write and speak English. His occupation is listed as an operator in a camera factory for a wage (Kodak?).

The Rochester City Directory from 1910 to 1925 list Paul as follows:
1910 Paul Maschiri woodworker boards at: 12 McFarlin
1039 Jay St
1915 Paul Maschiri woodworker boards at: 12 McFarlin
1920-21 Paul Mascari(Liboria)wdwrker home: 12 McFarlin
1925 Paul Mascari(Liboria)wdwrker home: 12 McFarlin It is interesting to note that Paul is listed as boarding at 12 McFarlin, which is the home of his parents, according to the same directory. Perhaps he got married in 1914 (his son, Ray, is born in 1915), since he now lists his home at 12 McFarlin (with his wife, Liboria (Mercurio)), and his parents have moved to 14 McFarlin. 14 McFarlin was the listed address for the grocery business of his father.

23 Jan 1999: Death certificate obtained and now on file from Monroe County (Rochester), NY. Certificate incorrectly lists his name as "Muscari," with an address (incorrectly) of 10 McFarlan St. It notes that he has been in the USA for 29 years (since 1903) and in Rochester for 29 years (since 1903). Date of birth is listed as "Unknown" and age is listed as 'about 65 yrs." (This would give him a year of birth as 1867, we are currently using a working date of July, 1855). His occupation is listed as "Fruit Dealer," for the past 15 years (since 1917) and was working in his occupation at the time of death. His parents are listed as Paolo Muscari (sic) and Maria Rine (sic), both being born in Termini Imerese. Informant for the certificate was his son, Sam Mascari (spelled correctly) of 152 3rd Street, Rochester. Undertaker was Jesse D. Cimino of 221 Central Park. Cause of death is "Acute dilatation of the heart - sudden" and "Chronic myocarditis - unreadable." In general, the certificate does not appear to be filled out very accurately.

23 Jan 1999: McFarlin Street is in an area near the old downtown main Post Office in Rochester, NY. It runs parallel to North Street and intersects with Weld Street (where his brother, Salvatore Matthew Mascari and his wife, Kathlyn, lived at 9 Weld St.). Weld Street runs off of North Street, about 2 blocks north of University. McFarlin Street currently has only 2 houses present, both appear to be of recent origins. It is difficult to determine exactly where 14 McFarlin used to be. The street probably only had 7 to 10 houses on it when it was active.

Mascari, Salvatore Matthew (1866 - 1921) - male
b. 1866 in Termini Imerese, Sicily
d. 19 OCT 1921 in Rochester, Monroe Co, NY

father: Mascari, Paolo (*1828 - )
mother: Rini, Maria (*1832 - )

Burial - [date: 21 OCT 1921] [place: Rochester, Monroe Co, NY at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery]

His grave is Section SO-5, Lot 32, Grave 4 N-E.

19 Oct 1921: Obituary obtained from Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, Thursday October 20, 1921 indicates that Salvatore "Matthew" died on Wednesday morning October 19, 1921 at the family home at 9 Weld Street. He was survived by his wife, Maria. Also survived by five daughters (not named) and two sons. Also survived by two brothers and five sisters.
Funeral on Friday morning, October 21, 1921 at 8:45 AM from the family house and 9:00 AM from St. Joseph's Church.

10 Jan 1999: The above obituary was obtained on Jan 10, 1999. At this time we thought Matthew was one of five children (Matthew, Rosario, Frances, Lucia and Maria) not EIGHT children! So, there is one other brother and two more sisters that we do not know about at this time.

Also, St. Joseph's Church was located on Franklin Street in downtown Rochester, behind the area of Sibley's Department Store (now closed). It was struck by fire in the mid-70's to mid-80's and the front shell of the Church was preserved for it's architectural value and the interior area of the burned out church was turned into a garden courtyard. Paul J. Caito (b. 1953) attended Mass there once on Ascension Thursday, 1971 as a high school student on a school trip to Rochester. He remembers the interior of the Church as having beautiful stained glass windows. The Church was only about 5 blocks from Weld Street, where the family lived. Weld Street runs off North Street, about 2 blocks north of University Avenue. The current site of 9 Weld Street is the back parking lot for the buildings that front onto North Street. 9 Weld Street was the south side of the street. The first house that is still standing on the south side of Weld is # 13 Weld. It appears that the buildings at North St. and Weld St. were storefronts at one time, possibly as grocery store. It would appear that S. Matthew and his family had an ideal location for a home that was close to shopping and within walking distance of the downtown business district. It was probably a very nice area of the city at one time.

Death Note

10 Jan 1999: Matthew, died in 1921 at age 55. Somewhere in the intervening years, Maria moved from 9 Weld Street in the city to 28 Marlborough Road,on the west side of the city near the airport, which was probably almost "suburban" at that time. Even now, it is an area of the city known as still being an area of well kept older city homes with nice woodworking details inside them.

Birth Note

1910 US Federal Census lists his name as "Salvador" and at age 3 years, he is the only child of the family who was born in New York (Rochester), all the other children having been born in Italy, according to the census.

1920 US Federal Census lists as 12 yrs old and in school at the time. He is residing with his parents at 14 McFarlin Street. He is a US citizen, born in the US, mother tongue is English and is able to read and write.

16 May 1963: Obituary of his brother, Paul, on this date, notes that Salvatore lived in Rochester at the time of his brother's death.

16 Mar 1975: Obituary of his sister, Mary Mascari Palmisano, notes that his name is listed as "S. Peter Mascari." The obituary, which was in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, does not list a city of residence for him, therefore he must have been living in Rochester at the time.

Death Note

He was 78 yrs, 6 most, 11 days old at the time of his death.

25 Aug 1985: Obituary obtained from the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle Thursday September 26, 1986, p. 8-B. Obituary lists his survivors as his wife, Mickey; one sister, Mrs. Madelyn Brescia; and one brother-in-law, Joel Friend. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Burial - [date: 31 MAY 1973] [place: Syracuse, Onondaga Co, NY at St Agnes Cemetery]

Later moved from St. Agnes Cemetery to St. Mary's Cemetery; Wilkes Barre, PA (29 Sep 1976).

Birth Note

3 Jul 1899 according to the SS Death Index.

Death Note

01-13-1928: Obituary of his brother, Frank, who died on this date at age 32 lists Samuel as living in Syracuse at the time.

10-15-1998: Death Certificate received from State of PA indicates a birth date of July 5, 1900 but it is obvious that the certificate was changed from a year of 1899. His age was listed at 72 years old, but it is obvious that the age was also changed when the year of birth was changed. The info on birth date, etc. was provided by Edith Caito Mascari (wife) and she is probably correct with the month and day, but the SS Administration is probably more correct on the year. The certificate indicates that he was DOA (Dead on Arrival) at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, Pa on May 29, 1973 at 4:25 PM. Cause of death was
arteriosclerotic cardiovascular heart disease. The certificate also states that he is not a veteran. The certificate lists his parents as Frank Mascari and Ann Williams. Interestingly enough, his sister: Josephine Mascari Caito, wife of Antonio Caito, has a death certificate that lists her parents as Frank Mascari and Anna Guglielmino. We know that Samuel and Josephine have the same mother and father and we think that Anna Williams is the correct maternal name. Their mother's obituary lists her brothers as a last name of Williams (and also LaNasa - we think her mother divorced at some point and her LaNasa brothers are actually step-brothers).

10-28-1998: Death Certificate indicates that he was buried in St. Agnes Cemetery in Syracuse, New York. In a phone conversation, St. Agnes Cemetery does not have a record of a Samuel Mascari buried there. He was buried in the family plot (at his death in 1973) at the urging of his siblings. In September 1976, his wife Edith, moved his body to St. Mary's Cemetery in Wilkes Barre, PA.

11-04-1998: Burial plot of the family of Josephine Mascari shows that Samuel Mascari was buried in the family plot and later moved to Wilkes-Barre, PA. Death certificate of his wife, Edith, lists her entombment as St. Mary's Cemetery; Hanover Township, PA (Wilkes-Barre area).

03-22-1940: Obituary obtained from the Rochester Times-Union Friday March 22, 1940, p. 13-A. Rosario died in his 84th year at his home at 25 University Avenue. he is survived by two sons, Anthony of Rochester and Paul of Syracuse; one daughter, Miss Mary N. Maschiri; one grandchild, Lucille. Funeral on Monday March 25, 1940 at 8:30 AM from his home at at 9:00 AM at St. Joseph's Church. Interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Rosario's death (3-22-40) followed the death of his wife, Lucia (10-24-39), by just 6 months, almost to the day.

University Avenue is in an area just north of downtown Rochester, not far from where his wife's brothers lived, Rosario Mascari lived at 14 McFarlin Street and S. Matthew Mascari lived at 9 Weld Street. Both University and Weld Street run off of North Street, Weld being about 2 blocks north of University. The site of 25 University Avenue is now a vacant lot on the south side of University, very close to the intersection of University and North. All are very close to the site of where St. Joseph's Church was.

06-19-1999: Death Certificate obtained from Monroe County Dept. of Health. His birthplace is listed a Termini Palermo Italy and his parents are identified as Francisco F. Maschiri, born in Termini, and Filippa Romano, born in Termini. (I think the "Francisco" is supposed to be "Francesco." We know the "Maschiri" is really "Mascari." This is the first note we have of Filippa's last name of "Romano"). He died of chronic myocardidits of 5 years duration. The episode of myocarditis that lead to his death occured from March 16, 1940 until March 22, 1940. The attending physician is Hiram Olsan or Okan, M.D., of 395 Canterbury Road. Funeral arrangements were by the A.J.Mattle and Son Funeral Home, signed by John W. Mattle, of 300 Cumberland Street. Informant for the certificate was his son, Anthony Maschiri.

In their early years together, he and Margaret lived in the Armory on Broadway St in Buffalo. There was a room in their next Armory, located on Masten Street, known as the Maxwell Room and featured a stuffed bear. The building burned down and no Maxwell Room was included in the new Armory.
During the Spanish American War, he was in the 74th Army (which later changed its number to the 174th). That Armory is on Connecticut Street, across from D'Youville College.
At age 19 (enlistment) he was 5Ɗ" and listed as a driver from Cold Springs, NY (apparently a section north of the city of Buffalo).
