William enlisted 29 Jan 1863 at West Liberty, KY, in Company B, 14th Cavalry and was captured 19 Mar 1863. His orphaned children would have been eligible for a pension but apparently no one was knowledgeable enough to apply. Their uncle, Stephen Salyer, was appointed their guardian by the Montgomery County Court. As he and his wife were quite young the responsibility was probably too great and the children were placed in an orphanage. Isaiah and Phebe Salyer, their grandparents, became the owners of the farm on Slate Creek and it seems odd that they would have allowed their grandchildren to be placed in an orphanage.

Question from Bud Caudle re:
I have a John Salyer supposedly born 1798 married to Margaret Sparks. John is supposedly a son of Zachariah Salyer(s), but I'm confused as to which Zachariah and which wife of Zachariah.
I also have a John Salyer reportedly born 1810, married to Margaret Jayne. This John is supposedly a son of Zachariah Jr and unknown wife.
Do I just have conflicting birthdates for the same John Salyer and possibly incorrect maiden name of wife? Or did he have two wives?
Reply from spiff@atlantic.net (John)
Here is an excerpt from "The Salyer Family" by Elisabeth L. W. Salyer, 1982, page 342:
E.7) John Salyer, the youngest son of Zachariah and Mary Salyer was born ca. 1810 on Mocassin Creek in Russell County, Virginia, and died after 1887 in Johnson County, Kentucky. He married 1st, Margaret Jayne, daughter of William Jayne. The marriage bond is dated 24 Nov. 1828. Both John and Margaret were under age and parental permission was required. Zachariah Salyer wrote the following permission for this marriage. (See illustration on page 343.)
William Jayne also wrote a permission for his daughter Margaret. (In previously published material concerning Salyers Margaret SPARKS is given as the wife of this John Salyer.)
John Salyer married 2nd, 23 April 1865 in Johnson County, Margaret Justice, daughter of Samuel Rice, Sr. John divorced Margaret 4 Sept. 1873 and he married 3rd, 17 May 1874, Elizabeth Preston. They were divorced 12 March 1881.
[end of excerpt].
Therefore, Bud, it would appear that you have two bits of conflicting information pertaining to the same John Salyer. Elisabeth Salyer's reference to the previously-published Sparks info seems to make it fairly clear that this previous information was in error.
If you or anyone is interested in the book by Elisabeth Salyer, I highly recommend it. She is a superb researcher and very professional and accurate with her information. Below is a link with information on how to order it:

Zachariah Salyer, Jr. was born after 1765 in North Carolina and died 1845 in Johnson County, Kentucky. Proven children of Zachariah and Mary: Samuel, William, Benjamin, Jacob, Levi, Joseph, and John.
Benjamin B Salyer was a coal miner. He was later known as Benjamin Jones.
spouse: Salyer, Elizabeth (*1699 - 1742)Birth Note
This Benjamin Salyer is assumed to be the same Benjamin who was the son of Charles Salyer of Woodbridge, NJ. More evidence is needed to prove the relationship. Other sources list Benjamin K. Salyer as a Huguenot.
His birth is also registered in Guilford C H, NC as 1704. Therefore these 2 Benjamins may not be the same person.Death Note
The earlier date is from Elizabeth Salyer's book.
Mary Salyer, who sent her GEDCOM to Laurie (SCARPACE) McKenzie, shows Benjamin K Salyeras d 1754 Builford C h, NC (Colony). He fell off a horse.

"His (Charles [Sallier] Salyer) whereabouts prior to 1693 and after 1732 are unknown. There is nothing in any record thus far located to justify even an approximation of his birth and death dates. His wife in 1693 was Mary Jones. Their marriage record has not been found but deeds prove that Mary was a daughter of Benjamin Jones of Woodbridge, NJ, and also indicate that perhaps Charles Sallier had been previously married. Between 1693 and 1697 Charles Sallier and his wife Mary Jones had three children whose births were recorded in Woodbridge, NJ Town Books: Benjamin Sallier, 4 Dec 1693, Mary Sallier 17 Oct 1695, Charles Sallier 23 Dec 1697. A Charles Sallier, possible the son born in 1697, served in the Woodbridge Militia in 1715."

The Jeremiah who married Esther Green may not be the same Jeremiah who married Jane McCullough in Rowan Co., NC. 01-08-1999: Information provided by Phil Sansone (b. 1919): The Termini records have the addition of "Leonardo" to Antonino's name and the genealogist (Kathy Kirkpatrick) who performed the research explained that given the addition of a middle name and the closeness of the birthdates to Leonardo, that the first Leonardo was either infirmed, near death or had died before the birth of Antonino and that Leonardo was added to assure continuance of the name, which was probably the first name of the father of Phil Sansone's grandfather's second wife.
This Antonino emigrated to the US and lived with Phil Sansone's (b. 1919) family in Malone, NY for a very short time. When Phil Sansone was a sub-teen, he remembers that he used to see Antonino once in a while and then he stopped coming around to visit. Phil's oldest brother John, now deceased, told Phil that Tony would visit Phil's father's brother Frank, who also lived in Malone, but Frank never came near Phil's family, supposedly because the families had a falling out for some unknown reason.
Family rumor has it that he got married and lived in Oswego, but Phil Sansone has been unable to pin that down.
Antonino may have married and lived in Oswego, NY.

23 Sep 1998: Marriage date of November 28th was supplied by Frank Scarpace (b.1922). Frank thinks he heard that all the Caito sisters were married at St. Anthony's Church in Batavia, NY. (Unfortunately, in checking records of St. Anthony's Church, there are no marriage records of any of the Caito women at the Church).
30 Oct 1998: Article in Batavia Daily News concerning the 80th Wedding Anniversary of Salvatore and Providenzia notes that Salvatore first came to the USA with his sister (Margaret) and her (then) new husband (Philip Sansone) from Sicily in 1898. This means that Margaret and Philip were married before our original marriage year of 1909. St. Anthony's Church in Batavia has no record of a wedding of Margaret and Philip. St. Anthony's was formed in 1909, so no weddings could have been performed there before that date. The question is: were Margaret and Philip married in Sicily and came to the USA as husband and wife; or, did they marry after arriving in the USA; and if so, where did they get married?
06-06-1999: Marriage day of November 11th, 1898 supplied by Lucille Maschiri and Margaret Sanzone McHarris (grandchildren of Phillip and Margaret).

05-07-1999: The birth records of his children Giuseppe and Anna Maria indicate an age of 40 years old in 1872 and in 1875. This would give Marco a birth range of between 1832 and 1835. His address in 1875 at the time of Anna Maria's birth was #5 Via Lombardo, Termini Imerese.spouse: Cirrintano, Michela (1835 - )
05-28-1999: The birth record of his son, Agostino, located by Kathy Kirkpatrick in the Termini birth records for 1867-77 (LDS Library microfilm #2014202) indicates an age of 50 years old in 1869. This would give Marco a birth date of 1819. Significantly earlier than first thought from the records of Giuseppe and Anna Maria.
09-15-1999: The marriage announcement of Marco Sansone and Michela Cirritano were located by Genealogist Kathy Kirkpatrick in the Termini Marriage Promises. The first announcement was on January 25, 1869. The second announcement was on February 7, 1869 and the third annnouncement was on February 11, 1869. The marriage probably occurred on February 11th or within that week. The groom was a single male 39 yrs old (b. 1830), fisherman, living in Termini, the son of unknown parents. The bride was a single female, 33 years old, born and living in Termini, the daughter of Vincenzo Cirrintano, fisherman, and of Domenica Salamone, who live in Termini.
