10-14-1999: Family history report from the Descendants of John B. and Margherita Caito (August, 1988): Margherita Caito was born in Termini, the second child (the first daughter) of Giovanni and Josepina Gentile Caito.
Her father, Giovanni Caito, was a sea captain who owned a fleet of fishing boats. Captain CAito travelled all over, collecting many beautiful clocks, furniture and jewelry from other European countires. He was fairly well off and provided a comfortable life for his family of two boys and four girls.
Margherita's mother, Josepina Gentile Caito, was the only daughter of a wealthy sea captain and had been brought up in privileged conditions. Josepina had two older brothers, both fishermen, who never married but lived together like monks. Josepina learned to embroider as a child and was pampered by her parents, who bought her fine jewelry and even hired a woman to comb her hair.
As the first daughter of Josepina and Giovanni, Margherita was pampered, much as her mother had been. She was given jewelry and her mother embroidered her beautiful clothes. Josepina made elegant trousseaus for all four of her daughters. Margherita attended school and reached the highest grade, similar to our high school. She enjoyed reading and writing.
In 1897, when she was 18 years old, Margherita married Gian (John) Battista Caito, and was the first in her family to come to America. She had known her husband before he left Termini for America, and had bought eggplant from his mother, Francesca.
Margherita had an older brother, Salvatore; a younger brother, Peter; and three younger sisters: Marina, Providenzia and Sara. They all eventually came to America between 1907 - 1909; first to Batavia, New York; and then to Detroit, Michigan; where they were all in the fruit and vegetable business. Salvatore later retired with his daughters to Florida. Providenzia and her husband, retired to Los Angeles, California from Batavia. In 1988, at the time of the writing of the family history, Sara was 96 years of age and the last surviving child of Margherita.
After marrying in February of 1897, John B. and his new wife, Margherita, sailed to America, arrived at the Port of Providence and took up residence with his sister Sophie and her husband Augostino D'Amore in a six-family house on Lily Street on Federal Hill. They soon became American citizens.
After nearly four years of marriage, their first child was born at their Lily Street apartment. They named him Gian Battista, after his father and grandfather. Later his name was anglicized to John B. Caito, Jr., but everyone called him Jack.
In 1902, the family built a six-family house at 73 Gessler Street. Sophie and her family lived upstairs. Here, the next five children were born, two years apart and mostly named after their grandparents. They later anglicized the Italian names. John (Giovanni) was named after Margherita's father; next was Frances (Francesca) named after John B.'s mother; Thomas (baptized Gaetano); Josephine (Josepina) named after her maternal grandmother and Maury (Mauriano Joseph) named after his father's stepfather, who had recently died. Margherita had wanted to name this boy Joseph, as she was devoted to St. Joseph, but her mother-in-law, Francesca, won out.
The remaining children were born at 85 Gessler Street; the twins Sue (Assunta) and Margherita (who died at 10 mos); Margaret (Margherita); Mary (Maria) and Elena.
In late 1939, her husband was hit by a car, subsequently developed cancer and died in that year. She always stayed by his bedside, holding his hand and praying. She was a strong person and would not allow anyone to cry around her dying husband.
Margherita enjoyed her children and grandchildren and was always cheerful. She spent much ofher later life crocheting afghans for them and devoutly reading her Bible. She delighted in seeing her children and grandchildren on Sundays when many would stop in to see her. She was always the center of the many birthday celebrations. Margherita died on Christmas Day, 1966 at the age of 87 years.

She was survived by three daughters: Mrs. Paul Maschiri, Mrs. Samuel Sanzone and Mrs. Josephine McKenzie. It also notes that she had seven (7) grandchildren. It notes further that she had four brothers and three sisters but does not name them. Funeral on Wednesday May 22, 1963 at 8:30 AM from her home on W. 23 Sep 1998: Marriage date of November 28th was supplied by Frank Scarpace (b.1922). Frank thinks he heard that all the Caito sisters were married at St. Anthony's Church in Batavia, NY. (Unfortunately, in checking records of St. Anthony's Church, there are no marriage records of any of the Caito women at the Church).
30 Oct 1998: Article in Batavia Daily News concerning the 80th Wedding Anniversary of Salvatore and Providenzia notes that Salvatore first came to the USA with his sister (Margaret) and her (then) new husband (Philip Sansone) from Sicily in 1898. This means that Margaret and Philip were married before our original marriage year of 1909. St. Anthony's Church in Batavia has no record of a wedding of Margaret and Philip. St. Anthony's was formed in 1909, so no weddings could have been performed there before that date. The question is: were Margaret and Philip married in Sicily and came to the USA as husband and wife; or, did they marry after arriving in the USA; and if so, where did they get married?
06-06-1999: Marriage day of November 11th, 1898 supplied by Lucille Maschiri and Margaret Sanzone McHarris (grandchildren of Phillip and Margaret).
09-26-1934: Obituary of Augustino Ardizzone Caito, who died on this date, indicates that he was survived by a sister, Mrs. Andrew Sansone of Italy.spouse: Sansone, Andrea (~1851 - )
05-03-1999: Family notes from Gloria Scarpace Caito (b. 1925), written in 1986 to Francis L. Caito (b. 1914) of Batavia, indicates that one of the sisters of Augustino Caito was a Maria Sansone who lived in Italy. Her notes also indicate that there was a sister, Lucia Sansone, who lived in Chicago.
05-21-1999: Information supplied by Gladys Hewitt indicates that Maria Ardizzone Caito and her husband, Andrea, spent their entire lives in Termini and never came to the USA.
08-24-1999: Genealogy Research Report from Kathy Kirkpatrick located the birth of Maria Ardizzone Caito in the Termini Birth Records 1855 (last half) - 1857 (LDS Library microfilm #1688283). The birth occurred or was registered on December 23, 1856. The birth was located in the index but the actual page of the birth record was missing from the filming. We hava a copy of the index page. The parents listed on the index page were Salvatore Ardizzone Caito and Saveria Corso.

*******MY CAMERON ORIGINS*******
This is not an effort on my part to bore the reader. I will not go into the history of The Clan Cameron - if the reader wishes to know the history, there are many places on the net to learn such history. I cannot give a complete history of my CAMERON family because I do not know which of the two Cameron Clans was the progenitor of my Cameron Tree.
The Cameron Family is a very large Clan and Camerons can be found in almost every country in the world. The purpose of this page is to let other Camerons know my Camerons as best I can document my ancestors.
After some 40 years of research, I can get my Cameron family only back to Shenandoah County, Virginia in 1779. It was here that my gggg grandfather, James Cameron, joined the Army in 1779. The origin and parents of James Cameron are still a mystery.
James was first stationed at Albemarle Barracks, now Charlottesville, Virginia, where he guarded prisoners of war. Later, his command marched the prisoners to Winchester, Virginia, and after turning the prisoners over to another command, James' outfit marched to the Falls of the Ohio, now Louisville, Kentucky, using Braddock's old road.
His service papers say that when he was discharged in 1781, he took the Kentucky Trace and returned home. It is not known for sure, but it is thought he returned to Shenandoah County, Virginia.
The next record I find concerning James is here in Wythe County, Virginia, when he married Charity Ann Spangler on July 20, 1784. They were married in the home of William Thompson, in Thompson Valley, now Tazewell County, Virginia.
In his early years after the war and his marriage, it appears James and Charity moved to different places because an old personal family history tells of James living in North Carolina - then Georgia (but I think Alabama on the Tennessee River) and then Floyd County, Kentucky.
By the census records, his third son, Duncan, was born in North Carolina.
About 1808, James, who was already in Floyd County, Kentucky, was visiting in Burke's Garden, Virginia with at least one of his son Duncan. I say "at least" because his oldest son, Daniel George, (my ggg grandfather) never left the Ceres, Virginia in his lifetime.
While in this area in 1808, James left his son, Duncan, with Jacob Spangler, and James returned to Floyd County, Kentucky, where he died in 1838.
In addition to Daniel George, and Duncan, other sons of James and Charity Cameron were Jacob, James, and Felix. Nothing is known about these three sons.
From all available records and an old personal history of the family, these three sons did not live to adulthood. There is one possible exception - A Felix Cameron was living in Hardin County, Kentucky in 1840-1850 and this man may have been the son of James and Charity Cameron.
The daughters of James and Charity were: Elizabeth, thought to have married a Snider and moved to Iowa, (2) Mary, who married Jacob Handshew, and lived in the Ceres, Virginia area, Sarah, who married Joe Watkins, in Floyd County, Kentucky, and moved to Missouri, (3) Nancy, who married John Howard, in Floyd County, Kentucky, and (4) Margaret, who never married, but had quite a few children.
My ggg grandfather Daniel, lived most of his life on the old Ceres Road as you travel from Ceres across Walker's Mountain into Crawfish Valley. Daniel's old home stood to the east of the old road just as you start up the mountain and above the present day (1998) Hudson place. He died sometime after 1850, a few days after being kicked in the head by a horse.
Duncan would serve in the War of 1812 in place of Jacob Spangler who did not want to go to war.
After serving six months in Norfolk, Virginia, Duncan Cameron returned home and married Jacob Spangler's daughter, Margaret.
In 1818, Duncan took his new bride across the Garden Mountain to the Valley of Wolf Creek, now in Bland County, Virginia, where he built his home and lived there until he died December 18, 1886, at the ripe old age of 92 years.
No ! That is not a flock of ducks passing over the old house. The original photo is very large, and I have compressed it greatly for loading speed.
The Duncan Cameron home no longer stands. From my talks with the older folks on Wolf Creek, it appears the old home, which was vacant and falling down, was most likely torn down around 1930-1940 time frame, and it is thought the home was torn down by the Boy Scouts of America when they acquired the Cameron land to be used as a campground.
From talking to Randolph Looney, who was born in the old Duncan Cameron home, it is thought the last family to live in the old home was John H. and Virgie Looney, Randolph's parents. The Looney family moved out of the old house in the 1920's.
The old home's location was on present day route # 614 (Wolf Creek Road), approximately 3 miles west of the intersection of # 614 and US # 52.
As you drive up Wolf Creek Road, and about 100 yards before you come to the entrance to the Boy Scout Camp, you will see a place on the right of the road where a large amount of dirt has been removed.
Directly across the road is where the Duncan Cameron home stood. During his productive years, Duncan acquired over six thousand acres of Wolf Creek land.
His boundary lines were from approximately one mile east of the site of his home up Wolf Creek to about the present (1998) Teddy Wolfe place, and the southern and northern limits of his land were the tops of Round and Rich Mountain.
The majority of this land Duncan and his son, Peter, owned jointly.
Peter would sell his part back to his father, and move west to Missouri where he was killed in action during the Civil War.
For unknown reasons, most likely the Civil War and it's aftermath, and advancing years, Duncan became burdened with debts, and in 1882, all his land was sold to cover his debts which had been long outstanding. His creditors, his neighbors, must have been very close friends and very understanding with Duncan because when the land was sold, Duncan and his wife were given the home place and the surrounding 200 acres of bottomland for their lifetime use.
Some in the family think the last Cameron to live in the old home was Joseph Wynn, Duncan's son, who sold his land about 1902, and moved to eastern Virginia, near Maidens.
I cannot prove or disprove this.
Joseph Wynn Cameron had acquired about 250 acres joining his father's land to the west - land that originally belonged to Squire Stephen Gose, and it is possible that Joseph lived in an old log home that stood on the north bank of Wolf Creek road across from the present day Teddy Wolfe place.
Duncan Cameron had a large family from two wives. After his first wife died, he married Margaret Fox, and there are descendants still living today on Wolf Creek.
Some of the family surnames associated with the Duncan Cameron family are Fox, Gose, Tabor, Cox, Brown, Brewster and Wolfe.
My ggg grandpa, Daniel Cameron, married Jean Gullion, a daughter of Barnabus Gullion, and the majority of that family remained in the Ceres, Virginia area with surnames such as; Bean, Ratliffe, McRae, Carver, Spangler, and others.
James W. Cameron, a son of Daniel, lived across the old Ceres Road from his father in 1850, and his two sons, Thomas, and Gordon eventually moved south across Walker's Mountain to the Kimberling area of present day Wythe County, Virginia, where they married Tobler sisters.
It is from Gordon Cameron that I descend. His son, Thomas Hawkins Cameron was my grandpa, and his son, Dewey Phipps Cameron was my father. My ggg grandpa, Daniel Cameron, had a son, David, who moved west after 1850, and it is thought he went to Indiana, or perhaps Illinois.
David's brother, Joseph, left present day Smyth County, Virginia, for Ohio either just before or during the Civil War leaving his family on Bear Creek, in Smyth County. Either during the war, or shortly thereafter, all of Joseph's family would move to Vinton County, Ohio, and some of those Camerons moved on west into Indiana and Illinois.Birth Note

Hello Laurie,
I received your query concerning James Cameron from the Magoffin Co Historical Society.
I have done some research on this line while researching the Thomas Watkins family of Eastern Kentucky. Here is what I have on James CAMERON.
James Cameron came to Floyd County Kentucky 1803-1808 and settled on land in the present day Magoffin Co, along the Licking River. He was named as a bondsman in court records of 1808. He was married to ANNA SPRINGER and they had at least 6 children, 5 sons and 1 daughter. The daughter, Nancy Cameron married John Howard in Floyd Co 10-5-1817. Their oldest son was born in the early 1790's. I believe Nancy was the youngest of their children, born ca. 1802 in VA. That would mean that they were not in Kentucky prior to 1802.
James Cameron was a Revolutionary veteran and received a pension for his service as a Corporal in the Virginia Line. It was from an excerpt of his Revolutionary War pension application that I got most of the information I have. You can obtain a copy of his pension application from the National Archives. What I read was an excerpt of the application where his wife, Anna Springer, applied for his pension after his death.
Here is a chronology of James as I have been able to find information on him:
Born 1760, Virginia
Served in Virginia Line, Revolutionary Way 1777-1780 (approximate times) Rank: Corporal
Married about 1785 to Anna Springer.
Moved to Kentucky about 1803.
Received Kentucky Land Grant for 50 acres of land on the Licking River - 1827.
Died - 1828 in Floyd Co, KY.
I do not know where James is buried. There is no record of his grave in any of the cemeteries in Magoffin Co. His daughter Nancy died 1850-1860 in Magoffin Co. I have no record of her place of burial.
I'm sorry I couldn't give you more info than this little bit, but if there is anything I can do to help you in your research, please let me know. Hope this helps you out.

Laurie,
Just returned from Floyd County. I think I told you before that ole James signed his deeds with an X so you will never find his signature.
I did find the marriage bond for Nancy Cameron, and the clerk does verify here that James was Nancy's father. Also in the old order books, there is a record where James gets his pension, and it states that he was an old Rev. War. Soldier.
As I have said before, I never fool with the DAR tooooo many errors in their records. BUT, surely this info should be enough for their records.
You can get copies of this info from the Courthouse in Prestonsbugh, KY. I would send a SASE along with at least 3 dollars for copy expense. It may only be 2 dollars - not sure what they would copy for you.

Laurie,
Made a trip to Floyd County recently, but did not find much. I can tell you this:
The old marriage bond for Nancy states that she was a daughter of James Cameron. No signature, but then ole James could not write according to old deeds.
Found his last land. It is on Pruitt's Branch, now called Salyers Branch. Still puzzled because I did not find a deed where the land left the Cameron name after the ole man died in 1838. I highly suspect ole man William Salyers, Sr took up the land. Don't know if it was legal - could be that before Charity came back to VA, her and ole man Salyers made a deal leaning over the fence, and the record just never got to the court house. I have seen that happen down here quite a few times.
Could not exactly pin point the fence lines for ole James because many of the old deeds are missing, but by the deed, and by driving up and down the branch a bunch of times with Berlin Howard, we think we know about where the land laid. MAN ! talk about country! can't imagine why ole man James left 200 acres of good bottom land back here and went to Floyd County??? Sure he had a reason, but guess we will never know it.
Did not get back to Bull Mire Creek and the Lewis Howard Cemetery because I was in the car, and that is NOT car country over there. Does not matter too much, I guess since there are no readable stones there. Berlin and I both now suspect ole James is buried on Salyers Branch either in the old Salyers Cemetery, or an old cemetery behind the Green place just as you turn up Salyers Branch. One of his grandsons is buried there, but again, no readable stones except for his grandson. Rest are just plain ole creek rock.
The old marriage bond is as close as you will ever get for proof as to who Nancy was. Hope the DAR will accept that for you. If not, tell them this ole Cameron boy says, "stick it in your ears.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Written by Joe Cameron, a descendant of Daniel George Cameron.
James was first stationed at Albemarle Barracks, now Charlotteville, Virginia, where he guarded prisoners of war.
The next record I find concerning James is here in Wythe County, Virginia, when he married Charity Anna Spangler on July 20, 1784. They were married in the home of William Thompson, in Thompson Valley, now Tazewell County, Virginia.
In his early years after the war and his marriage, it appears James and Charity moved to different places because an old personal family history tells of James living in North Carolina, then Georgia (but I think Alabama on the Tennessee River) and then Floyd County, Kentucky. By the census records, his third son, Duncan, was born in North Carolina.
About 1808, James, was already in Floyd County, Kentucky, was visiting in Burke's Garden, Virginia with at least one of his son Duncan. I say at least because his oldest son, Daniel George, (my ggg grandfather) never left the Ceres, Virginia in his lifetime. While in this area in 1808, James left his son Duncan, with Jacob Spangler, and James returned to Floyd County, Kentucky, where he died in 1838.
In addition to Daniel George, and Duncan, other sons of James and Charity Cameron were Jacob, James and Felix. Nothing is known about these three sons. From all available records and an old personal history of the family, these three sons did not live to adulthood. There is one possible exception-A Felix Cameron was living in Hardin County, Kentucky in 1840-1850 and this man may have been the son of James and Charity Cameron.

James settled Rock Fork Creek sometime between 1797-1806. he died there in October 1838. James sold 30 acres of his land in 1824 to Joel Martin, who in turn sold the land about 1858 to a Sarah Patton.
James Cameron was living in present day Woodstock, Va., when he joined the Army in the Revolution in 1779. After his military service, he came to Wythe Co., Va., and married Ann C. Spangler.
