Daniel Webster Allen was the first judge of Magoffin Co., KY. He was a tall man with white hair and he wore a distinctive suit. When Mack Farland Allen was very young he remembers seeing his great-great Uncle Daniel. Mack named his son Dan after Judge Daniel Allen, who was likely named after Daniel Williams, Edy's father. Note from Alkie COLLINSWORTH: "When he (Judge Webster) left office, the county was in debt fifty cents. Dan Allen reached in his pocket, pulled out fifty cents and paid the county debt out of his own pocket."

Thomas D. Allen has a picture of Eli and his 2nd wife with Mack, Stella, Jewel Deene, Dan, Floyd Mae Ludwig, Fred and Eugene. The picture was taken in 1942. The 1900 U.S. Census lists his birthday as May, 1867 (Vol. 52, Sheet 8, E.D. 55, Line 55 Soundex A-422, Roll #4). The census also lists his wife as Rebecca (6/ / 1869), age 32, born in Kentucky.

Edward and Patty Lydick, Sr., 9537 Eden Dr., King George, VA 22435 were visiting this Sunday morning. She is researching the lineage of William Shepherd b. 1840 who married 1st to Mary "Polly" Hale b. 1842. Polly married 2nd to Hezekiah Allen and William m. 2nd to Elizabeth Prater. The 1850 Floyd Co. KY census lists Brice Hale, age 53, b. VA, wife Mary (Vance) age 60, b. VA with Jacob Shepherd, age 25, and William Shepherd, age 10. By 1860 the above William at age 20 was married to Polly who was age 18. The mother of William and Jacob Shepherd is thought to have been Elizabeth Shepherd, dau of David Shepherd b. 1791 and Lucretia Hale b. 1793. Patty had been told by a very good researcher that William and perhaps Jacob Shepherd were in fact Barnetts...and that is where she is stalled.
She would also like to learn the parentage of Elizabeth Prater, the 2nd wife of William Prater.

Charlene Arnett Wooster of White Pigeon, MI writes that her father is Ellis Arnett, the son of Arbie Arnett and Margaret Allen. Margaret was the dau of William Allen and Polly Hale. She would like to know the names of their parents.

William Allen b. 1862 was the son of Ira Allen b. between 1821 and 1826. His mother was Lavina Mullins b. 1827. Ira Allen was a son of William Allen b. 1783 VA and Catherine “Caty” Gearheart.

Polly Hale was born in 1864 to Henry Hale (b. 1830) and Susan Hughes.

The 1860 Breathitt County census lists Henry Hale age 29 b. Floyd County. The 1860 Breathitt census has Henry Hale age 29, a shoemaker in the home of William W. Watkins and wife Margaret. According to Henry Hale’s marriage record he was a son of Preston Howard and Margaret Hale.

Death Note
Jewell died of pneumonia about a month after a house fire in which her brother, Floyd, was badly burned. She carried Floyd outside to a water tank and immersed his legs in the cold water. (from Thomas D. Allen)
