Hi, My name is Jackie Alto and I am decended from Thomas and Letty [Durham Howard through their son James and Elizabeth, then Greenville and Margaret, next John L.Howard and Katy Wireman, who are the parents of Noah Howard who married Anna Laurie Sanders and they in turn had my Grandmother Della Marie Howard. I was wondering if you have documentation for your info on your website as I have some different info and dates. I'm still trying to organize all my extended family but it gets kind of confusing when they didn't vary much in naming their children, James, John, Benjamin, Elizabeth etc. Hope to hear from you Thanks, Jackie
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Therefore Jackie Alto is in a different line than my brothers and I are. Since our grandmothers are third cousins, I believe Jackie and I are 4th cousins.
He lives in Boyne City.
Several grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one son-in-law Frank Fletcher also preceded her in death. She enjoyed a long life. She triumphed over many tragedies and still stood strong in her love of God. Her strength, wisdom, courage and love will be missed by all of the family and friends she leaves behind. My husband is a direct descendant of Stephen & Elizabeth and we have much documented information on Howards and Arnetts. Sealey is NOT a nic-name for Elizabeth.
1999 - No primary proof yet exists as to Elizabeth's parentage. Although Magoffin County Historical Society has said that Betty is the "dau of Sam," a requested Kentucky death certificate for Betty/Elizabeth Salyer returned a death certificate for an Elizabeth Salyer whose parents were Ben Howard and Susan Allen; a birth date of 15 Sept 1846 was given. The date of death given is 19 Oct 1922. The year 1922 is consistent with the information given by Connie Wireman to Laurie McKenzie. Although the death certificate states that Elizabeth Salyer was married, no husband's name is given. The sudden death of Elizabeth was attributed to "heart dropsey." I have listed Elizabeth's (Betty) deathdate as being between 1920 - when she was on the census - and 1928 when her husband, Nelson, died. Nelson was listed as a widower at the time of his death. NOTE: Barbara Greene, Ezra Parker, DAR (Royal Oak, MI) found proof of Elizabeth as daughter of Samuel Howard for my application to the DAR.
The household was #35 on the Farm Schedule. Nelson could read English. Oddly, Betty was checked as not being able to read or write or speak English. They owned the farm free and clear.Marriage Note
According to DAR, Nelson and Betty were married 12 Jun 1860. Magoffin Co was formed in 1860, therefore they would have been married in Magoffin Co, KY So --- take your pick.
NOTE: I'm very unsure of who this John Howard and Samuel Howard are. "My" Samuel died circa 1881. I only have one John Howard with a wife Susanna (Allen). I don't have parents for either John "Preacher Jack" or Susannah Allen. "My" John Howard died in 1831 and only had one wife: Nancy Cameron.
Jimmie D Allen of Salyersville, Magoffin Co, KY tells this story:
In Oklahoma Jack Baldridge killed John Howard, his uncle. Jack's parents were Raney and Sherman Baldridge. Jack Baldridge had married Polly Howard Holbrook, his first cousin, and John Rule Holbrook's daughter. He was sent to the "pen" in OK. He escaped jail, went to Tennessee, assumed another name, married, had a family and was about to escape his rocky past when he took sick. He thought he was going to die and so confessed as to his true identity - but then took a turn for the better and was promptly sent back to the Oklahoma Prison. This was in the early 1930's. Later - he again escaped from prison. That was the last that was ever heard of Jack Baldridge.
Hi Brenda Sue....I'm Morris Fletcher -- also descended from "Old George" Fletcher (1796-1860) via his sons Alexander (1816-1876) by Dicey Johnson and Simon (1827-1875) by Louisa Marshall....and from Reuben & Elizabeth (Noland) Marshall via their children Louisa and Mason. I also noted your posts of last week on the JOCOKY/Reunion list.spouse: Howard, Goalson\Jilson (1857 - >1900)
Regarding your Goalson J. Howard, here's what I see in my Magoffin Co Hist Soc reference books (my apologies if you have all of this data); spellings as they are listed:
* 1860 Mag Co census: HH# 546, 4 yr old Golson J. living with William (31) & Arta (Salyer) (23) Howard.
* 1870 census: 13 yr old Golson J. living w/ William (49) & Arty (30) in Precinct 5, HH# 62.....9 month old Cate Howard living w/ Larkin (33) & Polly (Salyer) (31) Howard in same Precinct 5, HH# 81.
* 1880: 28 yr old (I'd bet it was 23 on the original/actual census) farmer Gholson heads HH# 160 in Precinct 5, "Meadows", w/ wife Ellen (20)....10 yr old Katie lives w/ merchant Lark (40) & Polly (35) in HH# 100, same Precinct.
* 1900: 47 yr old Gholson (b Apr 1853) & 30 yr old Kate (b May 1870) in HH# 211 in District # 4 "Meadows". They're m 12 yrs; Kate has had 4 children, ages 10 to 2; thus,16 yr old Argustus must be son via Ellen?
* 1910: 52 yr old G.H. & 35 yr old Kate in HH# 54 in Atkeson Precinct. G.H. & Kate m 20 yrs (his second m); she's had 7 kids, 6 living, 4 (all girls) at home.
* 1920: 63 yr old home owner Golden & 45 yr old Kate in HH# 197 in Ivyton Precinct # 5 w/ dau Maxie and two boarders.
* Mag Co KY Marriages, 1860-1910: Only entry for a Gholson Howard refers to m to Pairett Watkins 27 Apr 1900 -- not likely your Goalson? Four Kate/Katey Howard marriages listed; none match husband/date.
* Mag Co KY Cemeteries Vol IV, pg 67: "Kate Howard Cemetery" in Ivyton shows Kate Howard b 1869, d 1949; shows G.H.Howard b 1868, d 1925. Birth date and middle initial do not match your Goalson, but could possibly be result of mis-read by surveyor or mis-type by transcriber? No other "G" Howard's in 1920 census, that I see, could be this person....and I see no other Howard's in Magoffin cemetery volumes close to your Goalson or Kate.
Subject: [MAGOFFIN-HISTORY] Goalson J. HOWARD born 1857 Magoffin Co. KY
Hello, I'm looking for the death date and gravesite of my gggrandfather, Goalson J. HOWARD, son of William HOWARD and Arty SALYER. He died after 1920, likely in Magoffin Co. My gggrandmother was Miriam CRISP, daughter of Joel CRISP and Rebecca BARNETT. I am descended through their son, Augustus HOWARD born 1883. Goalson was married to Kate HOWARD, daughter of Lark HOWARD and Mary Ann SALYER in 1887. I truly appreciate anyone's help.
Marriage Note
As of 1998, this couple was living in Indiana.
