Obituary, Chicago Sun-Times, Wednesday, January 30, 2002
Ignatius Anthony "Tony" Sgarlata, a son of Italian immigrants and a decorated World War II veteran, worked his way from the stockroom to district manager at Walgreen Co.
Mr. Sgarlata, who retired from the company in 1993 as district manager for Chicago's Southwest Suburban district, died Friday of complications from diabetes at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was 82.
Walgreen Co. Chairman Dan Jorndt said, "Tony was an exemplary retailer, and he played a major role in developing most of Walgreens' current senior management. We will always remember his wit, knowledge and true affection for his fellow employees.
Mr. Sgarlata spent 48 years with the company.
"Walgreen played an important part in his life. He even met my mother when they were both working for Walgreens," said Mr. Sgarlata's son Frank.
While Mr. Sgarlata worked full-time in the stockroom, he attended night classes at pharmacy school. He was named a Walgreens store manager in 1954 and district manager in 1958.
His strong work ethic started early. "During the Great Depression, he helped support his family by selling homemade bread door-to-door and handpicking onions in the fields outside of Chicago," said his sister Josephine.
He served in the invasion of Normandy and throughout Europe," said his son Mike, a former Marine.
In his personal life, Mr. Sgarlata was a sports fan who closely followed the Chicago Cubs and Bears.
He loved to play catch and touch football with his grandchildren and to golf with his close friends," said his daughter-in-law Sue. "He even learned to use a computer at 80 years old and delighted in exchanging e-mails and jokes with his grandchildren."
Said Mr. Sgarlats's wife, Betty, "He was a loving and caring family man."
Mr. Sgarlata is survived by wife Betty (Johnson); sons Mike, Bob, Tony, Frank and David; daughters-on-law Sue, Diane, Christine and Gail; sister Josephine Ardizzone; two brothers, Sal and Joe; eight grandchildren; six step-grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
Visitation was Tuesday at Sheehy & Sons funeral home in Orland Park. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Orland Park.
Contributions to the Disabled Veterans of America are appreciated.

The marriage bond was dated 19 Oct 1844. The consent certificate is signed by Jacob Shephard, father of Elizabeth, and Nancy Spry, mother of Lewis. This record is in the Floyd Co Courthouse, but is not indexed.
My husband's maternal grandmother was Martha (Bradford) Howard who married Edward (Ned) Ousley. She also was a child of William (Doc) Howard and Louisa Bradford. William was married at least 3 times but to the best of my knowledge Louisa never married. She and William had at least 6 children together. Louisa Bradford was the daughter of Saunders and Sarah Ann (Pridemore) Bradford. In the Ky. Vital Statistics whenever Martha would have a baby, sometimes she gave her maiden name as Howard and at other times it would be Bradford?spouse: Howard, Lourany (*1881 - )
Also, I have that Fairish "Fair" Shepherd did marry a Lourany Howard. Lourany was a child of William Doc Howard and his 2nd wife. Eliza Jane Johnson. If you need anymore information just let me know.

Information from Floyd Co., KY Vital Statistics.
One of our visitors this week was Jerry Neeley, 3382 Rutherford Rd., Powell, OH 43065, and his wife. He is a Shepherd descendant but didn't know exactly to which family his line belonged. He is the son of Warnie Neeley b. ca. 1908 and Flora Wright. He says Flora was the daughter of John P. Wright but I can't find any other info so I need help on this one.spouse: , Sarah (*1838 - )
Jerry's grandfather was Henderson Neeley b. 1887 who married in 1904 Magoffin Co. KY to Della Shepherd. We were searching for Della's parents and just happened to come across some recent material brought in by Dorothy Shepherd Wireman. Her info was on the family of Dovie Shepherd who m. first to Kendall Crager and. m. 2. to Bill Hicks. Dovie was a sister to Della Shepherd who married Henderson Neeley and they were the children of John Marion Shepherd and his first wife Eliza Allen. Other children were Fair Shepherd m. Pearlie Ratliff, Russell Shepherd m. Mollie Shepherd, Abe Shepherd m. Vina Vanderpool, Cleveland Shepherd m. Illant Shepherd, and Eliza Shepherd m. Harrison Vanderpool. After the death of his first wife John Marion Shepherd married Sarah Watkins and had ten other children, Millie, Susan, James (known as Jim Buck Shepherd), Daniel, Harlan, Nannie, Lacy, Manis, Fannie, and Lonie. John Marion was b. in 1863 and died in 1926 and he is buried on the Brushy Bill Shepherd Cemetery.
This was another case of one person's information helping another with their family research. We went on to research the Neeley side of Jerry's family. Henderson Neeley was the son of Andrew Henderson Neeley b. ca. 1855 who married first in 1876 to Martha Calhoun (who had previously been married to Riley Salyer). Andrew Henderson later married Nancy Caudill who is sometimes known as Nancy Estep.
Nancy is found as a widow in the 1900 Magoffin census. She was age 50 which means she was born about 1850 and the children in her household were Loren Neeley b. 1885, Henderson b. 1887, and Polly b. 1892. Henderson married Della Shepherd in 1904 and they are found in the 1910 Floyd Co. census with a Nancy A. Martin, age 55, in their household. Was this Henderson's mother? We would like to hear from others on this family. (Information from Todd Preston's column in the December 17, 1998 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.)

Surname: Shepherd, Prater
Seeking help with connection to Magoffin or Floyd County Shepherds and Praters. I have William Shepherd b. May 1840 in Floyd Co.; m. 1) Mary Polly Hale m. 2) Elizabeth Prater Jan 22, 1874 Montgomery County KY. Elizabeth Prater born May 1850,Floyd county. Elizabeth Shepherd is said to be daughter of David Shepherd and Lucretia Hale. Can anyone confirm? I was told she married a very old man to keep from bonding her children. Although her son John was bonded to Brice Hale but ran away to Scioto County Ohio. Was this older man a Barnett? Who are Elizabeth Prater's parents? William and Elizabeth's children are:
James, Ambrose,George, Robert, David, Rosa, Rufus, Millie, and Effie. We believe some moved to Ohio, and perhaps Elizabeth too in later years. William and son James are said to be buried in Camargo KY.

Surname: Shepherd, Watkins, Wadkins
Hello,
Trying to seek info on Shepherds and Watkins/Wadkins that were in Magoffin Co.,KY and later Menifee Co.,KY. Barb you asked about the William Shepherd born in May 1840. This must be the William, Susan , and John Shepherd mentioned in the 1847 Floyd Co.,Ky court records in the summons to Thomas Watkins Sr. The children were mentioned in why they should not be bound out and Thomas Wadkins Sr was asked to show cause why they should not. Elizabeth Shepherd married Thomas Wadkins Sr in 1845 in Floyd Co.,KY. On the 1860 census of Magoffin Co.,Ky, Elizabeth Shepherd Wadkins and a Robert Wadkins were with her cousin William Shpherd aged 31. Is this William Shepherd the father of your William born May 1840? On the 1880 Menifee Co.,KY census your William Shepherd is listed with a son Amberris Shepherd. Not very far away is my Ambrose Wadkins. Ambrose Wadkins was with Thomas Wadkins Jr on the 1860 Magoffin Co.,KY census 7 houses from Wiliam Shepherd aged 31 and the Elizabeth Shepherd Watkins and Robert Wadkins in his household. I think Ambrose Wadkins and Robert Wadkins are the sons of or children left/bound out to to Elizabeth Shepherd Wadkins. Brice Shpherd and a Brice Hale were the ones that brought the charges against Thomas Watkins Sr in Floyd Co.,KY in 1847 concerning the Shepherd children. I doubt Thomas Wadkins Sr was the father because he was abt 93 years old when he married Elizabeth Shepherd and these Shepherd children were born before Elizabeth married Thomas Wadkins Sr. One of the William Shepherds sold 100 acres to my Ambrose Wadkins in Sept 1880 in Menifee Co.,KY. Now my Ambrose Wadkins and his possible brother Robert Wadkins were born abt 1846 and 1848-1849. I have yet to find them on the 1850 census and they are not listed with Thomas Wadkins Sr or Jr or in any other Wadkins household. My Ambrose Wadkins and Robert both married Lawson sisters. Ambrose Wadkins had most of his land dealings with Shepherds or with descendants/grandchildren of Winnie Wadkins and Jonathan Pitts. Barbara Ingram is researching this Winnie Wadkins. Winnie Wadkins came from the same area of NC as Thomas Wadkins Sr and his brother Benedct Wadkins Sr of Floyd Co.,KY about the same time. They do not know if and how Winnie Wadkins is related. Any information on the Shepherds or Wadkins that may help clear up these tangled lines would be appreciated. Will be glad to share the little that we have. Would appreciate the information you have on the bound out Shepherd children.
