Death Note
This death date looks like she may have died in childbirth -- true only IF this marriage is correct. FURTHER Research! She is buried near her parents in Union Cemetery, Coles Co., IL.
From IL Marriage Index microfiche series (FHL# 6334564) Solomon Hostetler -- Because Nancy J. died in 1863, I'm not certain this marriage is correct. I'm not certain this is our Nancy's spouse. Further research is needed. She is NOT named in Adm. record for her father's estate, so I doubt there were any children. She may have died in childbirth IF this marriage is hers.

Russell Wireman, 116 S. Broad St., Hellam, PA 17406 wrote to say he was trying to locate some of his relatives who still live in the area. His grandfather was Smith WHITAKER who married Martha Rebecca Hurt. They had only one child Florence Mae, sometimes listed as Forest Rose Lee Mae Whitaker who married Jake Wireman b. 1908, son of Russell Wireman b. 1879 and Martha Shepherd.spouse: Hurt, Martha Rebecca (1869 - 1954)
Martha Rebecca Hurt was born in 1869 (according to the 1870 Pike Co. KY census) and was the dau of Creed F. Hurt b. 1837 and m. in 1861 Pike Co. KY to Sarah Williamson. She was born in 1847 to Harmon Williamson b. 1826 and Anna Bevins b. 1827.
Creed Hurt was the son of Absolem Hurt b. 1803 and his 1st wife whom he married in 1823. She was Ann Samples, dau of William Samples and Nancy Wilson. He m. 2nd in 1849 to Elizabeth Bevins, b. 1814, dau of John Bevins and Mary Stacy.
Absolem Hurt was born in Washington Co. VA to Garland Hurt and Marteshia Thurston.
Elmore Smith Whitaker was the son of Johnson Whitaker b. 1792 and Susanna
(Arnett) Howard b. 1796, dau of Celia Howard and presumably Stephen Arnett.
Johnson Whitaker is believed to be the son of Mark R. Whitaker, a son of a Methodist preacher of Russell Co. VA. Johnson's mother, Martha "Patsy" Whitaker, was a teacher and is buried at the mouth of Puncheon in a lost cemetery with the early Arnetts and Howards of that area.
Smith Whitaker's first family consisted of Delaney m. Woots Allen, Susan m. Walker Allen, Farisee m. Green Shepherd, Laura Belle m. Haden Allen, Betty "Monk" m. Irvin Allen and Siney m. Hatcher Allen.
The 1910 census lists Smith's wife of two years as Martha, age 40 with Elizabeth age 12, step-dau Ida age 10, and grandson Mexico Shepherd age 14. Martha is the mother of 8 children with 6 living.
According to Russell, Martha m. 1. Eli Allen and their children were Patton Allen, Mack, Ida, John, Lizzie, and Rose. The 1920 census shows Smith Whitaker age 73, Martha age 40 with daughter Forest (Rose) age 7. Another letter came from Russell Wireman, 116 So. Broad St., Hellam, PA 17406 about Elmore Smith Whitaker who was born in 1844 and his 2nd wife Martha Rebecca Hurt. They were the parents of Forest Rose Mae Whitaker who married Jake Wireman.
Smith was first married to Nancy Howard, the dau of Samuel Howard and Delana Jones. We have his second wife listed as a Mary Risner which is erroneous. Those of you who have volume 5 of the Legends in Blue and Gray Civil War book need to use some "white-out" on page 1823. This Mary Risner did marry a Smith Whitaker but he was the son of Morgan Whitaker and Susan Hale.
Martha Rebecca Hurt b. 1869 first married Eli Allen. She was the dau of Creed F. Hurt b. 1837 and married in 1861 to Sarah Williamson b. 1842, dau of Harmon Williamson, Jr. b. 1816. Much of the information from "Some Notes on the Whitaker Family" by C. E. Shepard, pub. in The Journal of the Magoffin County Historical Society, Vol. 12, No. 2, Summer 1990, pg. 74.spouse: , Martha (*1775 - )
Russell County Court Orders show that Mark M Whitaker presented papers to show his ordination into the Ministry at the May 1803 term of the Court and was granted the right to perform the rites of marriage in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and he posted the necessary bond.
He was not on the Russell County personal tax list of Russell County in 1802 or before.
Mark purchased 100 acres of land on the south side of the Clinch River in Russell Co, VA in October 1805.Death Note
Mark apparently died prior to February 1815 because his 100 acre property is listed as "the estate of Mark Whitaker" on the Federal tax list of land for Russell Co, VA for 1815.

I'm back with more questions!
Can anyone clarify the relationship/family of John ALLEN b 11 Jan 1809, Floyd Co, KY (s/o William ALLEN and Caty GEARHEART) and Mary "Polly" WHITAKER b abt 1830 Floyd Co, KY.
I have a marriage date of 1 Oct 1860, Magoffin Co, KY. However in a note I have: At this time, no evidence has been found of a marriage between Polly WHITAKER and John ALLEN.
The 1860 census shows Polly WHITAKER living in John ALLEN's household as cook with 4 children who are assumed to be fathered by John ALLEN. At this time John would have been 51 yrs old and widower of 1) Nancy Jane CLICK and 2) Celia SLUSHER.
Also the 1860 Magoffin Co census shows: ALLEN, John Jr., age 23, with wife Polly, H75.
I have children of John ALLEN and Mary "Polly" WHITAKER as:
Thomas (twin) WHITAKER b abt 1853,
Unknown (twin) WHITAKER - b abt 1853, died at birth (?),
Arty WHITAKER b 1857
Reese WHITAKER b 1859
Then:
Morgan ALLEN b bet 1860/1863 - If John ALLEN married Polly WHITAKER in October 1860, Morgan was definitely the son of John ALLEN.
Solomon ALLEN b 1865 - If John ALLEN married Polly WHITAKER in October 1860, Solomon was definitely the son of John ALLEN.
Also who were Mary "Polly" WHITAKER®s parents?
Have I made the all too human mistake of combining 2 families???
Again, thanks for any help and information!

Tried to post this in response to your last but the inquiry page does not allow a paste and I don't have the patience to look it up each child and then type. Anyway, I got most of this from Bruce Hamlin recently which added to the minimal amount I had on Johnson Whitaker's family.

He thrived as a store merchant. One of the tricks he used as a store merchant, was he paid $.99 for 25 pound of cornmeal and sold it to his customers for $.99. Because he sold cornmeal so cheap, he said that people would ride thier horses from Puncheon Creek and Salt Lick and do all of thier trading for groceries with him. Since money was hard to come by in those days, he would swap groceries for eggs or chickens and then trade the eggs or chickens to the "Drummer" to restock his groceries.
One of the things he told me about was that his grandfather, (he said his last name was Higgenbottom), was hung for stealing horses.

1879 and Martha Shepherd.spouse: Allen, Walker (1869 - )
