05-07-1999: The birth records of her children, Michela (b. 1835), Rosa (b. 1838) and Giacomo (b. 1840) all give her age in years that, when calculated backward, all result in a birth year of 1808 for Domenica. The birth record of her grandson, Giuseppe Sansone (b. May 31, 1972) gives her an age of 60 years, which calculates back to 1812. Given that Giuseppe's birth was so much later in time, the earlier birth records which chronicle her age are probably more correct and her birth year should therefore be listed as 1808.spouse: Cirrintano, Vincenzo (r1809 - )
05-28-1999: Brith records of her grandson, Agostino Sansone, born Aug 23, 1869 indicates that Domenica was 70 years old at this time in 1869, which calculates to a birth year of 1799. Since we have a calculated birth year of Domeinica's mother as 1788, it would be unlikely that Domenica's mother, Michiela Mascari, had her first child at age 11 in 1799. Again, given that this doiument is so much later in time than the earlier documents chronicling Domenica's age, the birth year of 1808 is more likely to be the correct year.
05-28-1999: Research Report from Kathy Kirkpatrick which located the birth of Agostino Sansone on August 23, 1869 notes that the birth was reported by Domenica Slamone Cirrintano, who is the maternal grandmother of the new child. It also notes that Domenica was the daughter of the late Gasuardo (spelling unsure).spouse: Mascari, Michiela (~1788 - )

7311 Floral St.Bertha & Chester kept chickens in the backyard. Garden City does not acknowledge a street named Floral. Patricia POYE Irvin recalls that it was off Warren, west of Inkster Rd. The street was incorporated into Westland in 1966. The assessor's office believes that area may have been part of Nankin Twp. at the time of their residence. Two of Olga's children confirm Patty's recollection. Further, Bertha's death certificate lists Garden City as the place of residence at the time of her death.Residence - [date: BET 1929 AND 1933] [place: Detroit, Wayne Co, MI]

There is a marker at Grand Lawn Cemetery, Grand River near Telegraph, Detroit, MI: Sec 20, Lot 21, Gr. 3. Her daughters, Orval & Olga, are there also. Bertha was mother to five (5) children: Helen, Carmen, Kermit, Orval and Olga. A grandson, Bob Looper, believes there was another daughter, Dottie. No substantiation can be found. In a letter written by Helen to her youngest sister, Olga, Helen refers to their deceased sister, Orval, as "Dobbie." Perhaps, this is what Bob Looper remembers. Bertha was a Detroit Street Car Conductorette during both World Wars. At one time she was part-owner of the Blue Moon, a bar-restaurant in Detroit. Daughter Helen could often be found helping out in the kitchen. Patty POYE Irvin remembers that she and her brother Kenny often sang in the tavern.Census - [date: 1930] [place: Detroit, Wayne Co, MI]

Grandma Bertha is listed as Bertha Bankhead/Burkheart; age 38, head of house; not married; 18 yrs old at last marriage; she was born in PA; both of her parents were born in TX. Also in the house was: Nettie/Netta Bankhead/Burkheart, her brother. Grandma Bertha did not have a brother! However her niece Phinetta was called Nettie/Netta. Phinetta was the daughter of Bertha's sister Susie. Nettie/Netta is listed 24 yrs old and single. In fact, Nettie/Netta was born in 1911 in KY. His/her birthplace was also listed as PA and his/her parents were born in TX. Nettie/Netta's parents were born in KY. She/he is listed as a truck driver. The third person at this address is Olga Poje - a roomer! 18 yrs old, also single; born in WV as were her parents. At least they got this last part correct! Mother was a stenographer with an insurance company - which was probably also correct.
The question arises - where is Frank Weiss? He should have been in the household too! There is a Frank Weiss listed in Iron Mountain, MI in the 1930 census. Perhaps he was there working in a copper mine.Birth Note
A Notification of Birth Registration states that Bertha Maria Salyers was born in Welch, WV., which is untrue. Bertha was born in Magoffin Co., KY.Death Note
As of 1996, Beyer Memorial Hospital is Oakwood Health Care Center. The State of Michigan had no record of her death. On 2 July 1997, Bertha's granddaughter, Laurie SCARPACE McKenzie, finally obtained a death certificate from Washtenaw County, MI. On the certificate, 7311 Floral, Garden City is listed as her place of residence. The County promised to notify the State about the oversight. Bertha died of a heart block. Antecedent causes were auricular fibrillation and uncontrolled diabetes. She also was diagnosed with mellitus for 40 years. Bertha was 69 yrs, 5 mos, 12 days old.

Nelson Salyer was the plaintiff in the suit.Marriage Note
The marriage was performed by S.C. Allen, Baptist, at S.B. Salyer's home. Witnesses were Crow Allen and Alice Salyer.
In addition to searching Magoffin Co., KY, Johnson Co., KY and Floyd Co., KY earlier, 9 Sep 1998 was spent by Laurie McKenzie and "Noddie" Lamb looking for their marriage license/certificate. A trip was made to Ashland and Catlettsburg, both in Boyd Co. KY, Huntington, Cabell Co., WV and Charleston, WV, the state capitol. Several counties including McDowell Co., WV were searched to no avail.----------child: Poye, Helen Annette (1902 - 1965)Divorce - [date: 10 NOV 1921] [place: Detroit, Wayne Co, MI]
2 Jun 1921 was the date of filing for the divorce. Bertha Poje was the complaintant. The alleged causes were: Cruelty and non-support - typical for the era.Marriage Note
As of May, 2000, no marriage license has been found. When researching for a record of their divorce, Laurie Scarpace McKenzie found the divorce record. It stated the date of marriage used here and that the marriage took place in Virginia. So far (May 2000) no record of the marriage in that state has been found. Of course, Laurie has only looked in KY, OH and WV.
Marriage Note
After divorcing Tony POYE, Bertha married Frank WEISS, her third husband. Patricia POYE Irvin remembers him as "Grandpa Frank." The marriage date was originally based on pictures of Frank at Bertha's daughter Orval's, grave. Orval passed away in 1926. Bertha and her husband, Frank, reportedly lived in the flat above her second husband, Anton (Tony) on Brandon Street. After 3 trips to the Detroit City-County Building, and many hours of pouring over the original books of marriages in Wayne County, on 29 Sep 1997 Laurie McKenzie found the marriage license of Frank WEISS and Bertha POJE, so one more mystery is solved! There are numerous mis- or alternate spellings on the license. (Book 54, Page 323) For example, Bertha's father is listed as Sebastien SANDERS, her mother's maiden name was listed as Janette ALLEN. The license also states that Bertha and Frank had each been married only one time. Their ages were listed as 39; Bertha was actually 42.
Marriage Note
Laurie McKenzie is in possession of a partial diary written by Bertha telling of the abuse, both physical and mental, inflicted on her by Chester. Could the diary have been ramblings as a result of her diabetes?
