Hall, who attended Nelson, he (Nelson) was senile and hadn't "eaten a bite for 10 days." The informant was Nelson Howard of Salyersville, KY. This Nelson was the grandson (s/o Susannah) of Nelson B Salyer.

Ashland T. Patrick was born in Magoffin County, Ky., June 2, 1859, a son of John W. and Abigail (Salyer) Patrick, natives respectively, of Magoffin and Johnson Counties, Ky. The paternal grandfather, John Patrick, a native of Virginia, came to Kentucky about 1800 and settled in Magoffin County, where he engaged in farming; his wife was Martha (Kanard) Patrick, of Kentucky. The maternal grandfather of Ashland T. Patrick was Jacob Salyer, also a native of Virginia, but who settled in Johnson County, Ky., was a farmer, and his wife was Newcarius (Litteral) Salyer, of Kentucky. Ashland T. Patrick received his education at Georgetown College, Ky., and at the Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio. He studied law under Judge John E. Cooper, of West Liberty, Ky., and began practice in 1883; two years later he was elected county superintendent of schools, which position he resigned in April, 1886, and was appointed United States commissioner. In 1881 he married Lulie Howes, a daughter of W.W. and Mary (Ferguson) Howes, of Kentucky. They have two children, Lenore and Hortense. Mr. Patrick is a member of the Presbyterian Church, is a Mason, and a Republican.
