The name of Archibald Prater was on the personal property tax list of Russell Co, VA, as late as 1799. According to the 1850 census of Floyd Co, his daughter Nancy was born in Va. about 1802 and his daughter Celia was born in KY in 1807. Therefore the family must have moved from KY. to Va. between 1802 and 1807. The family of Archibald Prater was enumerated in the 1810 Census of Floyd Co. Also present in the county was Sarah Allen, the widow of Samuel Allen. William Allen, born ca 1783 in Patrick Co Va, son of Sarah and Samuel Allen, died in Breathitt Co in 1854. James W. Prater, who moved from Tazewell Co VA to Morgan Co, KY sometime during the period 1840 - 1850, died in Morgan Co in 1855. His death records show he was born ca 1782 in Tazewell Co, VA son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Prater. Archibald Prater died in Floyd Co ca 1831. His will, which is now missing from the court house files, was proved in Floyd Co Court 15 August 1831. In Jan 1832, Lewis Power, Archibald's son-in-law, was made administrator of the estate. In Feb 1834, Floyd Co Deed Book C, Page 427, the other heirs of Archibald sold land to Lewis Power: "John Prater, William Prater, Thomas Prater, Elijah Prater, Archibald Prater, Sally P. Simore or Sizemore or P'Siner, William Patrick, Hugh Patrick, and David M. Cooper of the Counties of Morgan, Floyd, and Nicholas, Kentucky To Lewis Power." The body of the deed mentions "the heirs of James Prater, deceased."

FAMILY OF ARCHIBALD PRATER OF FLOYD COUNTY Contributed by Martha Heinemann 705 N. Belverdere Memphis, TN 38107-5029
Many articles have been written about Archibald and Sarah Fugate Prater and their descendants. None have contained records of the Praters in Virginia although they lived there for 47 years. Public records which must be searched in order to trace the family of Archibald Prater are located in six Virginia counties, Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Chesterfield, Washington, and Russell. Evidence collected so far indicates that Archibald Prater moved his residence only once - from the vicinity of Patrick and Henry Counties, Virginia, to the area which is now Tazewell County, Virginia. In 1755 when Archibald was born, Halifax County was very large. In 1766 Pittsylvania County was cut off from it. Then in 1776 Henry County was formed from part of Pittsylvania. Still later after the Praters had left the area, Patrick County was created from part of Henry. Washington County was also quite large at one time. In 1787 Russell County as formed from part of Washington, and in 1799 Tazewell County was created from the northern part of Russell. I have included references to the Allen, Musick, and Fugate families because they migrated westward along the same route and intermarried with the Praters. Names are spelled as they were found in the individual records.
Archibald Prater, pioneer settler of Floyd County, resided near Salyersville in present-day Magoffin County. His wife was Sarah Fugate, daughter of Josiah and Elizabeth Fugate. Proof of Sarah's parents may be found in Floyd County, KY Deed book C, 413, and in the will of Josiah Fugate, which is recorded in Rails Co, MO. The names of the parents of Archibald Prater were not known [at the time of this article, but later theories suggest Thomas Prater and Josie Allen Prater or possibly Jonathan Prater and Elizabeth Cresap Prater??]
Since Pittsylvania Co had not been created from Halifax when these men were born, they probably were born in that part of Halifax which became Pittsylvania and still later Henry Co. The Statutes of the Legislature of Virginia (Hening's Statutes) contain a list of payments to residents of Halifax Co in Sept 1758, mostly for service in the militia, for hire of horses, of for provisions. On the list are Nehemiah and Ningum (Ninyon, Ninian) Prater.
In the County Court Orders of Pittsylvania Co the following names were found: 1767- Nehemiah Prater, 1768- William Prater, 1773- Nehemiah Prater, and 1778- Ninian Prater. In 1766 land was surveyed for Elexious Musick. Those names appeared later in personal property lists of Henry Co, Va: 1778 - Nehemiah, Archibald, Jonathan, and Ninion Prater ("Minar" may have been Nehemiah. His name was sometimes written "Miah."). 1780 - Nehemiah, Jonathan, William, Ninian, and Archibald Prater.
During the period the names of Samuel Allen and Elexious Musick were on the lists. In Henry Co marriage records is the marriage of Sarah Prater to Simon [actually Samuel] Allen 17 Sept 1783. Soon after Archibald Prater was discharged from the service, He moved to Washington Co Va, settling in an area which is now Tazewell Co. This is proved by a land survey recorded in Russell Co. Elexious Musick entered 153 3/4 acres of land in Washington Co by warrant dated 1782. The land later lay in Russell Co and finally in Tazewell Co as these counties were established. The 1782 description of the land says that the property extended "to the line of Arch Prater." The property was located near Ceder Bluff in Present day Tazewell Co, Va.
A 1783 survey of land in Washington Co shows that Johnathan Preter acquired 110 acres on the North Fork of the Clinch River. Marriage records of Washington County include these: Thomas Prater to Millie Wheeler 27 May 1778 and William Prator to Elizabeth Fuget 26 April 1785. A 1785 Washington Co petition asking that Russell Co be formed bore the signatures Josiah, James, John, Coleby, and Zachariah Fugate; Arch, Jonathan, Thomas, and William Prater; and Elexious Musick. After Russell Co established, the names of the Praters and related families appeared there. The 1787 personal property tax list for the upper district contained the names of James, Josiah and Randolph Fugate and Arch, Jonathan, and William Prater. In 1792 Jonathan Prater's name was on the Russell Co land tax list. The entry said "Jonathan Prater, assignee of E. Musick, 100 acres." The Russell Co Court Order Book for this period confirms that Jonathan Prater died in 1795.
In 1795 Samuel Allen appeared in Russell Co. He was one of the signers asking that Tazewell Co be formed from part of Russell. In Feb 1834, Floyd Co Deed Book C, Page 427, the other heirs of Archibald sold land to Lewis Power:
"John Prater, William Prater, Thomas Prater, Elijah Prater, Archibald Prater, Sally P. Simore or Sizemore or P'Siner, William Patrick, Hugh Patrick, and David M. Cooper of the Counties of Morgan, Floyd, and Nicholas, Kentucky To Lewis Power." The body of the deed mentions "the heirs of James Prater, deceased.
In Floyd and Pike Counties there are Praters who are not descendants of Archibald Prater. We suspect, but cannot prove, that some of these people are descendants of Jonathan Prater, who was born in 1758 and died in 1795. Others may be descended from William and Thomas Prater who were in Washington Co, VA about 1785.
[Martha acknowledges the assistance of Alice Patrick Reynolds, a descendant of Archibald Prater, who furnished family Bible records and other references. Thanks also to Connie Arnett Wireman who verified references at the Floyd Co Court House.]
[I apologize for any errors I may have inserted into this article by Martha Heinemann... they were the result of fumble fingers! psw 10/96]
It has been suggested that his parents were Thomas Prater and Joice Allen. It has also been suggested that his parents were Jonathan Prather & Elizabeth Cresap. It has also been suggested that he is the son of Philomen Gittens Prater & Margery Hunt.......... I do not believe this one is correct.
Additional research is required....... but I am more inclined to believe that Jonathan Prater and Elizabeth Cresap are his parents....... but it is NOT proven! 2/1997 GBP

Marriage Notes for ARCHIBALD PRATER and SARAH FUGATE:
Archibald first came to Nicholas Co, KY (which at that time included what is now Bath & Fleming Cos) expecting to settle there. A terrible drought occurred in that section with crops drying up and livestock dying for lack of water and pasture... general desolation threatened. Archibald and his older boys, having heard of the heavy pea-vine growth and abundance of water in Floyd Co, and realizing they were facing starvation if their livestock died, moved the family to Floyd Co, KY.
They built a house and planted crops. Sarah and the other children remained in Nicholas Co. The men did so well in Floyd Co. that the next year Sarah and the rest of the children went back with them. They enlarged their house and spent the remainder of their lives there. Collins History of KY p. 536: Magoffin Co KY was first settled about 1800 by emigrants Archibald Prather, John Williams, Clayton Cook, Ebenezer Hannah and a few others. Some of them attempted the settlement in 1794 but were driven back by Indians.
KY Encyclopedia p. 795: Situated on the upper part of the Licking River, Salyersville was the site of a pioneer station known as "Praters Fort" and "Licking Station".

Notes for WILLIAM PATRICK:
Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B Johnson County
Elijah Patrick, a native of Magoffin County, KY., was born April 10, 1828, a son of Meredith and Rebecca (Williams) Patrick, natives respectively of Russell County, Va., and Magoffin County, KY. Meredith Patrick was born in 1804, came to Kentucky with his father, and was a farmer. He served as sheriff and magistrate of Floyd County twenty five years. William Patrick, grandfather of our subject, was a soldier in the war of 1812, and participated in the battle of Norfolk. He died in Kentucky in 1814. His wife was Annie (Rains) Patrick, of Virginia. William Patrick was a son of Jeremiah Patrick, who was one of the earliest settlers of Kentucky, was a farmer by occupation, and died over seventy years ago. The maternal grandfather of Elijah Patrick was Isaac Williams, a farmer of Kentucky; his wife was Hannah. Elijah Patrick was educated in the common schools. When twenty-five years of age he began merchandising, which he continued until the war broke out, when he met with heavy losses. During the war he piloted Gen. Nelson from Montgomery County to Prestonsburg, and stopped with him three or four days. He was in secret service for Gen. Nelson, Gen. White, Gen. Burbridge, Col. Gallop, Col. True and Col. Craner, and acted as scout all through eastern Kentucky for two years. Soon after Nelson's army had passed Mr. Patrick's dwelling, the Confederates raided it and destroyed it, and despoiled him of four thousand dollars' worth of goods, in revenge for his aid to the Federal army. Mr. Patrick then removed his family to Paintsville, where his house was again raided several times and robbed of fifteen hundred dollars. Mr. Patrick also participated in the battle of Paintsville, and at the battle of Punchin against Clay, and was one of the guard who carried Clay to prison. In 1863 Mr. Patrick was elected to the State Senate from the Thirty-third District of Kentucky, and served four years. He was Postmaster at Burning Springs, KY., from 1855 to 1861, when he resigned. After the war he engaged in merchandising for seven years, when he turned his attention to farming. In 1856 he married Louisa Rule, of Johnson County, a daughter of Andrew and Nellie (Friend) Rule, of Monroe County, Va. The following children have blessed their union, viz: Caroline, wife of Pearce Patton; Willey, died in 1880; Kate, Ella, Fred, Bishop and Nannie. Mr. Patrick is a Republican politically, and voted for Clay and Brakey in 1850 for Governor and Lieutenant-Governor of Kentucky.

Event Rev War - [date: BET 1780 AND 1782] [place: Henry Co, VA]

Archibald signed an oath of allegiance to the United States in Henry Co., VA on the third Monday of January, 1777. He enlisted in the Revolutionary forces 11 Sept 1780 for a term of 18 months. He was a farmer, resident of Henry Co., VA, age 25, 6 ft. 2-1/2 in., brown or blond hair, blue eyes and fair complexion.
Soon after Archibald PRATER was discharged from the service, he moved to Washington Co., VA where he patented 153-3/4 acres of land. The property was located near Ceder Bluff in present day Tazewell Co., VA. The name of Archibald PRATER was on the personal property tax list of Russell Co., VA as late as 1799. According to the 1850 census Floyd Co., KY, his daughter Nancy was born in Virginia about 1802 and his daughter Celia was born in KY in 1807. The family must have moved from Virginia to Kentucky between 1802 and 1807.

Archibald PRATER served in the Revolutionary War. He signed the Oath of Allegiance in Henry County, VA, on 1-3-1777. He entered the Rev War 9-11-1780 for 1 year and 6 months. He was a farmer. Archibald stood about 6ƈ 1/2", had blue eyes and fair complexion. His bother, Johnathan, was of similar build and description, and also served in the Revolutionary War at the same time from Henry County, VA.
Archibald PRATER had first come down from Pittsylvania to Russell County where he met Sarah, daughter of Josiah and Elizabeth FUGATE. She was born in Frederick County, but had come with her parents several years before to Montgomery County, later to Russell County. Archibald, a few months out of the Continental Army, married her in Montgomery County.
In 1791, PRATER and possibly his brother, Jonathan, associating themselves with Ebenezer HANNA, Clayton COOK, and perhaps a few others, went by way of Cumberland Gap and across country to the head of Licking, looking for a place to settle. That was before Wayne's victory at Fallen Timbers. Wandering bands of Indians forced them either to retreat back to Virginia or plunge deeper into Kentucky. They decided on Kentucky.
This little group found a place in the present Nicholas County, then Bourbon. Here they stayed four years but they were still intrigued with the site on the upper reaches of the Licking with its fertile soil and abundant game.
They were awaiting the inevitable time when the Indians would be forced to abandon a section there. They built a fort in 1800 on the low hill where a spring was located. Selection of the site was considered necessary as a precaution against Indians, for they were not satisfied that Wayne's victory had completely subjugated the savages. But they were never destined to use the fort. Nearby settlers referred to the place as Licking Station, although the inhabitants of the small settlement called it Prater's Fort.
Archibald and his wife Sarah were two of the few settlers of Licking Station who came forward to become members of the new Burning Springs Church in 1810. Archibald PRATER is buried on the grounds of the old Magoffin Baptist Institute site.

Birth Note

March 26, 1997 -- The current theory as to Archibald's parents is Jonathan PRATER and Elizabeth CRESAP Prater. NOTE!!! THIS IS ONLY A THEORY AT THIS TIME. FURTHER RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE DONE. According to Mary D. FUGATE there are many errors in the FHC and AF on the Fugate families. Please contact her with any questions. mdfugate@aol.com

George W. PRATER, a farmer of Hillburn Township, was born in Kentucky in 1832, and is a son of Jonathan and Margaret (GRIFFIE) PRATER. Jonathon was born in Virginia, and as a young man located in Floyd Co., KY. where he engaged in farming. George lost both parents when a small boy. When about sixteen he accompanied an older brother to Arkansas, locating upon the farm where he now lives. The brother made this his home until his death during the war. He accompanied Price on his famous raid through Maryland and died from the effects of the wound. George W. lived on the White River until the commencement of the war then moved to Texas where he remained until the close of hostilities doing service in the Confederate Army. He located upon his present place about 1880. In 1855, he married Malinda J. SALYER a native of Kentucky. She bore him eight children and died April 23, 1876. Her children were named John, Mary J., George, William (deceased), Daniel, James C. (deceased), Joseph, Thomas J. Mr. PRATER afterward married Mary COMBS a sister of Capt. COMBS, and a native of KY. Mr. PRATER is a successful farmer of 100 acres of well cultivated land; is a member of the Christian Church, and in politics is a Democrat. Unknown author, however, written prior to 1950.

On 18 Feb 1833, The Floyd Co Court appointed Elijah Prater guardian of Josiah Prater, an infant heir of Archibald Prater, deceased. The term "infant" was used for anyone under the age of 21 years. [However, I speculate that Josiah may have had some disability, based on the wording of his father's Will - psw]

William Clayton Cook is said to have come into Eastern Kentucky with Daniel Boone, I believe, as well as Archibald Prater and others. It is also said that Cook Co., IL was named for his brother. This information was written on the back of a very old picture. A relative in Kentucky made me a copy of it, but I can't seem to locate it right now. I do have a typewritten copy of it which I can send you later if you're interested.

Dear Peggy, Thanks for all the info. Re message of 17 Dec 02:50, I'll have to check on the photo. Re message of 17 Dec 11:08, the information I have about John Prater's wife is that her name was Mary Brenton. I have a copy of something that someone used to get in the DAR and it listed her marriage at the home of her parents at Bethel, Nicholas County, KY. Re message of 17 Dec 12:06, I'm really thrilled to get anything that might connect with my gg grandfather William Clayton Cook. From info I have, he is supposed to have come into Kentucky with Archibald Prater. If he was the one you sent me the posting on, then he would have been about 37 years old when Sarah (Prater) Cook was born in 1807. Do you suppose she married someone that much older than her, or maybe the William Clayton Cook she married was the son of William Cook. I will certainly write to Mrs. Robert Huff who posted the query. Also in that same message, you mentioned David Bruton Wells. There were Wells that married into my May family line. In fact, there are 19 Wells mentioned in "The May Families of Eastern Kentucky" published by the Magoffin County Historical Society. My great aunt Elizabeth May married Matthew Wells. Also, Caleb D. May married Louisa Wells. In looking at the posting page you sent, I found 3 other things of interest to me. My other great grandmother was Margaret Ann Brashear. There were 2 queries about Brashears and one or two about the Berry family. We have a cousin by marriage who is researching the Berry family. So I passed that information on to him. I get the Kentucky Explorer magazine but so much of the time, I do not take the time to read all the queries. It's strange how one will read them online and won't on the printed page. We are also researching Bayes, Burrows, Lemaster, Tackett, Sandlin, Harbison (my husband's families) and Currie, Turman, Driskell, Loper, Thurman, Brashear, and May (my families). If you run across anything on any of these, let me know. I'm really enjoying our correspondence. You mentioned going to Denver. Where do you live? Have you figured out how distantly related we are? Thanks again for all the information. Bye now. Ruth
GG grandfather William Clayton Cook is said to have fought in the Revolution. He is also said to have come into Kentucky with Archibald Prater and Daniel Boone. Clayton Cook appeared on the Floyd Co. KY 1820 Census apparently with a family living with him. He married Sarah Prater 22 Mar 1829 in Floyd Co. KY. I think this must have been a second marriage in view of the 1820 Census. He is said to have been buried in Floyd Co. (now Magoffin Co.) where the cemetery was moved when a new school was built. His gravestone has been lost. We do not know birthdates or death dates for him. We do not know any of his ancestors.
Some of his children were:
Mary Ann Cook b 11 Dec 1833, d 4 Sep 1897 Morgan Co. KY, m. 17 Jun 1853 to Thomas Allen May
Elizabeth Cook m. James Randall
Wiley Cook m. Delilah Nichols
Miles Cook
There are many descendants of Mary Ann Cook and Thomas Allen May. If anyone has connections with these Cooks, please contact me. I'm eager to know more about William Clayton Cook, and I would be happy to share what info I have about his descendants. Ruth Harbison e-mail: harbison@flashnet
I've only recently discovered that the Claytons and Cooks were Quakers, and I've found some interesting webpages about them. I can't find out a thing about my William Clayton Cook, though. I know he married Sarah Prater in 1829 in Floyd Co. KY (I'm related to Peggy Sue Wilson through the Praters), and they had 4 children, one of which was my g grandmother Mary Ann Cook. That's really all I know for sure about him. He died a long time before Sarah did, and she lived with her daughter Mary Ann (Cook) May at White Oak in Morgan Co. KY. The Claytons on my mother's side are way back, the first one being William Clayton of Chichester, Sussex, England who married Joan Smith 30 Oct 1631. His son William Clayton was born about 1632 in England. This William's daughter, Mary Clayton, was born 29 Jun 1665, in Rumboldswyke, Sussex, England. She married John Beals of another prominent Quaker family. All of this depends, however, if we can establish for a fact that the William Cook b. 20 Nov 1774 and Sarah Hawkins b. 1792 are the same William Cook and Sarah Hawkins that were in Union Co. SC at the proper time. Now, tell me about your Claytons - and Cooks if you have any. Hope we can make some connections and maybe learn some more about our families.

Prater, Sarah (~1760 - <1840) - female
b. ABT 1760
d. BEF 1840 in Floyd Co, KY
A Nehemiah PRATER is mentioned in many Henry Co., VA documents. This could possibly have been Sarah's father; he is mentioned a few times in connection with Samuel ALLEN. Archibald PRATER married Sarah FUGATE d/o Josiah FUGATE. According to Peggy Sue Wilson, Sarah is a sister of Archibald PRATER.

Census - [date: 1810] [place: Floyd Co, KY]

Sally Allen was found on the 1810 Floyd County Tax List. She is probably the correct Sally since at least two of her sons are also there - George and William. Her husband is supposedly deceased by 1810 if Sally's name was on the rolls.

Marriage Note

In the Henry Co. marriage records is the marriage of Sarah Prater to Samuel Allen - Sept. 17, 1783. THE ALLEN FAMILY of EASTERN KENTUCKY: "Sarah lived in Floyd County, KY in 1820 and 1830. It is not presently known how many children were born to this family. One child has been definitely established through the BREATHITT CO. KENTUCKY VITAL STATISTICS. Entry reads: William ALLEN age 71, d. Feb. 8, 1854, married; farmer; parents: Samuel and Sarah ALLEN; birthplace: Patrick Co., VA; found dead in woods." In Henry Co. marriage records is the marriage of Sarah PRATER to Simon [actually Samuel] ALLEN 17 Sept 1783.

father: Prater, Archibald (1755 - 1831)
mother: Fugate, Sarah Martha (1763 - 1832)
It has been handed down in the family that her first son, Elijah was born out of wedlock. He was said to be the son of David Picklesimer, who did not marry Sally until much later in his life, and when Elijah was about 5 years old. Elijah went to live with his Uncle William Prater at about the age of 15. In 1832 Sarah gave permission for her son Elijah Prater to marry Jemima Patrick. He is probably the man listed in the 1850 census of Madison Co, AR, Heilburn Twp, family #226. Elijah was mentioned in his grandfather, Archibald Prater's Will... "Elijah Prater, son of my daughter Sally." GBP
Isodore and James Picklesimer are also named as grandsons of Archibald, sons of daughter Sally, in Archibald's Will.
According to later census records, Sarah "Sally" (Prater) "P'Simer", was born in Virginia. At the time of the 1850 census for Floyd County, Kentucky, Sarah reported her age as being "50", thereby indicating that she was born about the year 1800. At the time of her marriage she stated that she was "22 years of age", thus indicating that she was born about the year 1794 or early 1795. Apparently Sarah had added a few years to her age in the affidavit for the marriage license and subtracted a few years at the time of the 1850 U.S. Census, since the headstone at her grave shows 1797 as the year of her birth.
Sarah's father, Archibald Prater, has been named as a member of the early party of Pioneers who established the first settlement - Prater's Fort or Licking Station - on the upper Licking River near what is now Salyersville, in Magoffin County, Kentucky. He was a Revolutionary War veteran, having enlisted in the Virginia Line September 11, 1780, and serving for a period of eighteen months.
Sarah "Sally" (Prater) Picklesimer did not marry again after the death(?) of David. She did have other children in addition to Elijah Prater, Jr., and Isadus and James Picklesimer. The five known additional children were "Picklesimers" not because they were children of David, but due to the fact "Sally" did not re-marry.

Birth Note

Census records vary as to Sarah's age, but she was probably born close to 1797 if the birth of Elijah in 1812 is correct.

Death Note

Little is known concerning Sarah (Prater) Picklesimer during the remaining years of her life subsequent to the time of the 1850 U.S. Census, at which time she would have been 53 years of age. Although she was not found named in any later census records (1860, 1870 and 1880), she apparently lived to be about 85 years of age. According to the dates inscribed on the headstone at her grave in the Bluegrass Cemetery at Salyersville, Kentucky, she died in "1882".
"The wind scatters the leaves to the ground, but the live timber burgeons with leaves again in the season of spring returning. So one generation of man will grow while another dies". Homer - The Iliad.

spouse: Picklesimer, David (*1793 - )
- m. 15 APR 1817

Marriage Note

David first obtained a marriage license in Floyd County, Kentucky, February 24, 1817, to marry one Celia Howard. At the time he executed bond, with Michael Risner as surety, David filed a certificate signed by "James Howard" stating that Celia was his daughter and was "of lawful age". No minister's return of a marriage was ever recorded and, apparently, the marriage did not take place for "Celia Howard" later married Isham Dykes in Floyd Co., Kentucky. An affidavit signed by "Celia Howard" and stating that she was "21 years of age and upward and willing" is on file with the marriage bond of Isham Dykes. [Note: There is an Isham B. Dykes in Hawkins, TN -- which is where so many of the COPES ended up. psw] Almost two months later, April 10, 1817, David again applied for a marriage license. This time he filed bond, with Alexander Young as surety, for a license to marry "Sally" Prater. In an affidavit which David presented to the Court Clerk when he executed bond, "Sally Prater" stated that she was "22 years of age a free agent to act for myself and have agreed to marry David Picklesimer". (She was not "22 years of age") (Alexander Young who witnessed "Sally's" affidavit and co-signed David's marriage bond was also a Revolutionary War Veteran. He had served in the South Carolina Line of the Continental Army.) On April 15, 1817, five days after he obtained the license, David and "Sally" Prater were married by the Rev. Samuel Hanna, a minister of the United Baptist Church.

Original Magoffin County article states that "There are two Thomas Praters, and confusion as to which is son of Archibald." Listed in 1850 census of Morgan Co. Family #68. A deed recorded Morgan Co. Deed Book H, pp 244-245 names his heirs. Widow Rebecca (Cope) Prater is living in Johnson Co, KY 1860 with son James L. The other Thomas Prater b. 1790 married Elizabeth Salisbury 1818 in Floyd Co., is family #470 in Floyd Co census, married second Sarah Hughes 1855. He died 1 Aug 1860 and is buried in Floyd Co. 10/96 Gary Benton Prather lists Thomas and Rebecca Cope.... so it is probable that the mystery has been solved, especially since Rebecca is Nancy's sister. Sisters marrying brothers was very common at the time.
