Cambridge and Mary ARNETT lived on the Arnett Branch and later at the Kelse Arnett place.
Bertha Salyer Poye told her grandchildren that they were related to Daniel Boone. They believed her. This Daniel Boone Arnett must have been the person to whom she referred - and must have been her little joke! In fact, this Daniel Boone was their first cousin, once removed.
1. David ARNETT was born 6 Jan 1734/1735 in Scotland. He died 12 Sep 1825 in Harlan County, Kentucky.spouse: Gullett, Letty\Letitia (*1754 - )
BIRTH: David Arnett's age has long been in dispute. A Green Family Bible - which has long been lost - gave a date birth of 6 January 1735, but based on the fact that he was possibly not tax exempt until 1811 in Knox Co, Elizabeth Salyer and others have speculated that the "1735" date was mis-copied and that a later date of "1755" would be more likely. The last record of David Arnett was an 1820 Harlan Co entry where he paid tax on a male over 21. In the Green Bible the date of death was given as 12 September 1825. Thomas Arnett's date age of death of 82 for David would have him born 1743, so no clear help there.
However, Letitia's surname has not been known, and Thomas' suggestion that her last name was Green would fit since David and Letitia's daughter, Nancy Arnett, married James Green (son of Lewis Green and Esther Kilgore.) Letitia may have been a first cousin of Lewis Green.
According to a 1928 letter of H.G. Arnett, a knowledgeable attorney in Magoffin Co, David Arnett came over to America shortly before the Revolutionary War possibly with his father who may have also been named David. Although H.G. stated they came from Scotland, they could have come by way of Ireland.
(Information from John Arnett)
David married Letitia GREEN?. Letitia was born 1740. She died after 1830.
In attendance at the third Arnett reunion in Arnettsville in 1908 was Thomas F. Arnett a 71 yo attorney from Salyersville, Magoffin Co, KY. While doing research on various Arnett lines, Coy Arnett of the West Ky branch of the family, found an Arnett Family Enrollment Card dated Oct 25, 1908 which was completed by Thomas F. Arnett, age 71, Salyersville, occup: Atty. Ann Watson sent me a copy of the form in the summer of 1999. Thomas Arnett gives on the card the following family lineage:
parents: William Arnett, died 1901, age 94, and Nancy Patrick, died 1848, age 60
grandparents: Reuben Arnett, age 75 at his death and Susan Killgore, age 74 at her death.
great grandparents: David Arnett, age 82 at death (date not given) and
................................Lettie Green, age 80 at death (date not given)
(Information from John Arnett)Birth Note
"The Arnett family is English." EARLY MORGAN COUNTY, by Arthur C. Johnson. The birth date may have been 1855 and simply misread from the old records. Elisabeth L. W. Salyer believes the 1855 date is more likely, based on other dates concerning David Arnett.Death Note
By 1820, David Arnett had moved in with his daughter Nancy and her husband James Green. He lived withthem ntil his death. When he died, David deeded all his property to James and Nancy Green.
8. David ARNETT (Stephen , David ) was born 1812 in Floyd County, Kentucky. He died 1853.spouse: Carpenter, Jenny (*1806 - )
David married (1) Ibba PRATER.
David also married (2) Jennie CARPENTER. Jennie was born about 1816 in Floyd County, Kentucky.
They had the following children:
+ 43 M i David ARNETT was born about 1838.
----------child: Arnett, Cassy (1857 - )Marriage Note

spouse: Howard, Beecher (*1912 - )Burial - [place: Royalton, Magoffin Co, KY at Arnett Cemetery]

She died in childbirth.
3. Elias ARNETT (David ) was born about 1780. He died after 1825.spouse: Miles, Elizabeth (r1786 - )
Elias does not appear in the 1810 Knox Co. census. His wife Elizabeth is living alone with their three Arnett children. It is not known why Elias was absent that year or where he was.
1810 Knox Co., KY census:
Elizabeth Arnett- 2 males under 10, 1 female 26-45, 1 female under 10
From 1811 to 1822 David Arnett paid taxes for a male over the age of 21. This may have been for his son Elias. Elias and his family are in the 1820 Harlan census. After 1820 Elias disappears and no more record of him can be found. He probably died between 1825-30 or else moved away, leaving behind his family.
1820 Harlan Co., KY census:
Elias Arnett- 1 male 26-45, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 10-16, 2 males under 10, 1 female 26-45, 1 female under 10
In about 1830 a woman named Elizabeth Fletcher showed up in Floyd Co., Kentucky (where Elias' brothers Stephen and Reuben had previously moved to). Stephen and Reuben Arnett helped Elizabeth Fletcher obtain land in Floyd Co. in 1830. She had five children with her in the 1830 census. Four of them (James, Mary "Polly", Celia, and Kelsey Nelson) also used the name Fletcher. But one of Elizabeth Fletcher's daughters, Susannah, went by the last name Miles. Susannah stated on her marriage license that she had no natural father.
Local legends in Floyd Co. indicate that there were originally three Arnett brothers who came to Floyd Co. Two of these brothers were Stephen and Reuben. Was the third Elias? All of Elizabeth Fletcher's children were told they were really Arnetts, even though they went by the name of their stepfather Fletcher. Local legend also indicates that Elizabeth Fletcher's maiden name was originally Miles.
1830 Floyd census:
Elizabeth Fletcher- 1 male 15-20, 1 male under 5, 1 female 40-49, 1 female 15-20, 2 females 5-10
It is my (DH) belief that Elizabeth Fletcher was really Elizabeth Miles (the widow of Elias Arnett). She apparently left her older 3 children (Elias, Telitha, and Barnett) behind in Harlan Co. with relatives, when she moved first to Tennessee and then to Floyd Co. Elizabeth either re-married to a Fletcher when Elias Arnett died, or she assumed the name Fletcher for some reason. Her younger five children were probably all really the children of Elias Arnett, with the possible exception of Susannah Miles.
Elias married Elizabeth MILES. Elizabeth was born 1785/1787. She died after 1870 in Magoffin County, Kentucky and was buried in Magoffin County, Kentucky.
BURIAL: Elizabeth is buried next to her son, Kelse Nelson Fletcher in Magoffin Co Kentucky.
Elias and Elizabeth had the following children:
+ 13 M i Elias ARNETT Jr. was born 17 Dec 1803 and died 14 Aug 1869.
+ 14 F ii Telitha Letty ARNETT was born 1806 and died.
+ 15 M iii Barnett ARNETT was born 6 Mar 1809 and died May 1895.
+ 16 F iv Polly FLETCHER was born 2 Oct 1812 and died after 1843.
+ 17 F v Susannah MILES was born 1820.
18 F vi Celia FLETCHER was born 1823.
Celia married Julius MEDLEY.
19 M vii Kelse N. FLETCHER was born 1825.
Kelse married Malinda ARNETT.
