He was reared on the home farm and attended the public schools of his native country. He afterward took a course in the Kentucky Normal School at Louisa and next entered Valparaiso University in Indiana. His technical studies were completed in the Chicago Medical College, later controlled by Loyola University. He was awarded the M.D. degree in 1919. Dr. Salyer was both a practicing physician and lawyer, having been admitted to the Kentucky Bar Association in 1930. He was also one of the organizers of the Citizens State Bank and served as president and chairman of the board of that bank.
A well-known Democratic leader, Dr. Salyer was prominent in political circles in the country and state for many years. He served as Perry County's Representative in the State Legislatures in 1946 and 1948, and was, for a number of years, chairman of the Perry County Democratic committee. He was elected Judge of the Perry County Circuit Court in 1925 and served the four year term from 1926 through 1929.
Dr. Salyer was a member of the First Baptist Church, a Mason, and held membership in the Kentucky and American Bar and Medical Associations at his death in 1953. Robert Shanklin Salyer was born July 20, 1825 on Copper Creek near Nickelsville, Virginia. He died July 13, 1881, near Elkhorn City, Kentucky. He is listed in the 1860 list of landholders in Wise County as owning 451 acres, of which 80 were improved with a total value of $1500. He served in the Confederate Army as a 2nd Lieutenant under Col. L.H.N. Salyer, his nephew. Shanklin married (1) Anna Easterling in 1847 and divorced her in 1867. She remarried to a Vicars. Anna and Shanklin had seven children while living in the Copper Creek area of Russell County. They were:
1. Melvina (never married)
2. Isabel Jane married Thomas Addington. Five children.
3. James Madison married Liza Ann Gardner. Three children.
4. Sarah married Levi Potter.
5. John married Nancy Kilgore. Fifteen children (six died of the flu).
6. Mary V. married David Stapleton.
7. Robert S. married Louise Kilgore.
Franklin and Lydia were second cousins. Lydia's 1st cousin was Robert Shanklin's nephew.

1. In 1882 Malinda and James moved by covered wagon to Illinois where they lived for a short time. In the
mid 1880's they again moved, by covered wagon, to Moody, Tes. James worked as a "sharedropper"
for a few years then urchased a 100 acre farm known as "the Wilcoxen place". their home was a large
white house situated on the edge of town. this house burned in 1914 and all family records and pictures
were destroyed. In the late 1890's President McKinley appointed James gilmore Postmaster at Moody, Texas, and James established one of the first rural mail delivery systems in the state. In 1912 when Woodrow Wilson became president, James Gilmore was replaced as Postmaster. After their home was destroyed by fire they moved to Waco, Texas.
2. Malinda and James were the parents of ten (10) children.
3. the first child born in 1873. died as an infant.
